Why is "My Little Pony" so popular?

I honestly don't know. I've never seen any MLP shows in my life. Am I missing a 'must see'? Constantly I see people's avatar as something to do with MLP than anything else, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against it.

I'm totally not sure if it's all a joke and people put a MLP avatar (usually a .gif) just for laughs. If it is a joke I don't get it. Maybe it's not a joke, maybe people like the show. If you do like the show, what's so amazing about it? Please educate me.

My view of it: It's just another internet fad, that some hardcore nerds decide to take seriously. Sort of how some people started to genuinely think that Chuck Norris is awesomeness made manifest because of the "Chuck Norris facts".

Short answer: Because it's awesome. The franchise as a whole is mind-numbingly stupid; it consists of absolutely nothing more than cuteness for the sake of cuteness. But famed children's television creator Lauren Faust hates that most girls' entertainment is like that, and set out to turn My Little Pony into something that is both aimed at young girls and actually of a recognizable level of quality. The result is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, a well-animated, well-acted, well-written, funny, creative, friggin' adorable, and just awesome show.

Well, for me, what attracts me to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is mostly the animation. It's high quality stuff for something done in an outdated version of Flash [if what I read was right (certainly does explain some of the hilarious graphical glitches)].

It's not just that though. The show has character beyond just being a marketing scheme. The individual 'mane cast' characters, and even the supporting cast, all have relatively believable personalities for talking, magical, and flying equines. To top it off, the voice actors are in no way inexperienced.

Finally, the production team managed to make it enjoyable for people outside the target audience through a lot of references that the target audience might be too young to get.

It also helps that they're so damn cute!

Oh, and what's a 'brony'?

Brony is the term that makes it okay to enjoy MLP. Normally, adult males enjoying kids cartoons are considered man-children and looked down upon, but because this is a fad, it's totally okay.

Also, it's even more devastating because it's a GIRL'S cartoon, which means further scorn and derision.

Not that I care about labels, it's just funny to me that this show gets special snowflake treatment.

Internet users have a stigma for being lonely outcasts. In most cases these people want to be more popular people and be liked but they don't want to give up the things they like to do it.

One day these people discover a passing interest in something they "shouldn't", and discover others who also share this same passing interest. Suddenly there's a whole community of people just like them and they have a place to belong. So they dive into it headlong changing their screen names, avatars, signatures etc to reflect this new person that is accepted.

It's like the "furry complex" but at least these people have the decency not to make crotchless fursuits and write incredibly awkward stories about it.

Although, the furry and MLP communities tend to have a large overlap.

I wonder why.

I bet that more than half the people who say they like it, have never actually seen it. They just say they like it because they think it's a cool thing to say. It's not. It's a cartoon about ponies. There's nothing cool or interesting about it and they all know it.
