Well this was not much advertised and flew under the radar for the most part, plus it's almost a PS3 exclusive and it's one of them hardcore JRPGs, so while Studio Ghibli put a notable mark on their story everything else is very old and hard to swallow (for me at least).

Obviously it does need a whole lot more recognition, but I also understand why people would be reluctant.

It is true that some spells are unique for each player? I remember the developers also said that some player must do other actions to perform a spell than other players.
Not to my knowledge. Maybe for the DS version, but that's Japan exclusive.

OT: Honestly, while the presentation was pretty awesome, actually playing the game shares a lot of the same design problems that JRPGs suffer from in general, like the needlessly confusing pseudo realtime combat system, horrid menu system and inorganic nature, that are easily overlooked at first, but take their toll on the experience...<.<
