As of this writing, Origin crashed on me again and I can't play my games. It also keeps "forgetting" my password when I type it in correctly.

Origin gave me more issues and crashed in the 2 days I've had it than Steam in 4 years.

As far as I can tell, it's because people are paranoid and predisposed to disliking EA. Yeah, Origin looks at your computer. They don't care about your porn. What they want to know is what kind of video card you have. Operating system. RAM. Gamepad plugged in? Joystick? What CPU? You know, the stuff that matters when they want to bring their next game to market. It's not nefarious, it's just nice to be able to say "60% of our PC customers have 4GB of RAM or more." It'll turn out games that can look as nice as possible, while still running on the most systems. But, of course, that answer is too easy. So people convince themselves that EA wants to know about their taste in porn, or their Facebook password or whatever. Because they already hate EA, so it is easier to scapegoat. When we had this discussion about six months ago, one person even insisted that EA should pay each of us for our system specs.
Read the EULA though, the thing was if they said plainly that they wanted that info for that reason then I would be okie with it. Instead they painted themselves a broad legal avenue and unlimited ability to do whatever they want with ANY data mined off your computer. They fix that one thing, that one thing. And maybe I would be able to buy ME3.

It's EA's way of monitoring their audience. Origin basically takes the information on your computer, operating system, and the hardware and software you have installed, and gives it to other companies for marketing. Current games that release on the PC require you to have an Origin account to play them. And you can't play games offline anymore, regardless of whether you own retail or digital.

If it were optional, I wouldn't have a problem with it. The fact that EA wants to make this permanent is what presses my buttons.
But that is exactly what steam does so why is origin a problem. As for the spyware thing once it all came out and they changed the terms of service it's not as bad as everyone makes out and even if they were finding out what operating system pc gamers are using most that could help them focus there efforts on optimising future games for the most popular OS
Actually Steam has offline modes for their games you just have to right click on the game and tell your computer to download the files it needs to run it offline. Also the head of Valve has a dead man switch hard coded into steam so that if the service goes OOB or whatever you can still play your games after steam if long dead. :D Awesome.

Because Origin has you give complete access of your files to EA in order to play it's games, whereas Steam is allowed to look into certain directories to check if you're pirating games, but where it can look is limited to only what's necessary.
And because we all hate EA anyway.

Valve loves their customers and treats them as such and not tugs and sees them as potential customers
Valve didn't support SOPA
Steam Sales
it,s cheaper to buy on Steam then in Retail
Steam asks for data instead of just taking it
Demo,s
loads of games for around $5
Origin never learned from Steam

After so many years, Valve still kept the trust of their costumers. I don't remember if I ever read where someone was rightfully claiming that Valve did something wrong to him.

Just one case where one idiot who used someone else's CC and that someone else reporting him was banned. But he was asking for it. Every other problem was solved trough support tickets.

On the other hand, EA did so much wrong with every step. Every game they bought got worse and worse. I don't know if there is even one IP that got better than got better.
They had Valve as an example of how to do well on the online market, how to design good options, how to make things work, jet when Origin came out, it was shit.
Expensive, intrusive, buggy...

Sorry, but mistakes won't be tolerated if you have such a great example of how to do things right.
Saying "look at how Steam was when it came out" isn't going to make Origin look better. It will still be as it is. But Valve didn't have someone to look up to and learn from them. Valve was the only player at that time and they had to experiment, be creative and give people what they want. They started badly, jet they succeeded.

Origin comes to an already established market and tries to force their rules on it.
No can do, no.can.do.

Valve earned the trust of people, EA lost all the trust I had.
I'm not going to invest into someone I don't have any trust. If that means no ME3, so be it.

It took Steam nearly three days to respond to my email about resetting my password. After that it took another two days to actually work. Why is their no "I forgot my password" link to click on. Hell even Origin has that.
Next time use Support Tickets.
Every problem is usually solved within a day with them.

Also, there is the option to get your password back. "Retrieve lost account" in the log in screen on Steam.

Steam was absolute trash when it came out and it was full of bugs. Its saving grace was that it was still optional upon release. I got it with counterstrike condition zero and I could install steam but the game would still run free of steam. Once they got established and got the bugs worked out they are a truly amazing games distributor.

Never have to worry about CDs
Corrupt game files are easy to fix and re-download
hell when steam it's self breaks you can delete everything in the root directory but the sub-folders and steam.exe and it will FIX ITSELF.

Origin is trying to jump into the market against a giant, with bugs and without being optional to let players test the waters as well as work out the kinks without forcing anybody into your service.

Also steam offers a huge library of games from all over and origin just offers their own games (as far as I know... have not used it since BF3 beta when it wouldn't actually let me purchase BF3)

I wouldnt say STEAM = Good in fact I dislike it for a number of reasons. STEAM is just the best digital distrubution service the PC gaming market has at this time. So its not the case of it being good its a case of it being the best we have right now.

The problem with Origin is its glorified spyware which I and a lot of other people have a huge problem with. Coupled with the fact that its owned and operated by EA only makes it worse because I dont trust EA, Ive just had to many bad experiences with them and I see them operating a digital distribution service as a conflict of interest.

That all aside there are many other problems with Origin when compared to STEAM. First off that Origin prices all its games at a full $60 no matter how old they are. PC gaming is already expensive enough and a small cut in price is needed for PC games especially since they dont have to manufacture physical copies or have to split as much money with retailers. Their costs come down, so their prices should also fall

Then theres this whole thing with the PC version of Mass effect 3 requiring origin to run. The problem as I see it with this specific game is ME and ME2 was released on STEAM. Meaning save files wont transfer over. This wouldnt be such a big deal if Origin gave a free copy of ME and ME2 when you purchased ME3 but thats not happening. This wouldnt fix the save file issue but it would make the purchase of ME3 on PC a little more attractive. Im just gonna go ahead and say it, Im a PC gamer. Thats my platform of choice and Im fed up with developers that dont want to support it. However its worse when a developer wants me to put spyware on my machine (something I use for work and have my own creative projects on like artwork and writing). So since I refuse to use origin I also refuse to buy ME3 what so ever. If Bioware and EA dont want to do a sensible PC release then they wont get my money

From what I've heard:
When you get banned on their forums you get banned from your games...
It scans your system, if one account is banned all of your accounts that have used that computer will be banned...
They have taken games away from Steam to be put on their own platform...
Valve has been in this game for a long time, Origin is simply poorly done mimic of steam...
So yeah, there are your reasons, they've been said many times by many people.

I haven't used anything on Origin (I redeemed a free Mass Effect 2 code with my copy of Dragon Age 2, but I haven't even downloaded it yet), but I am a Steam gamer. Here's my understanding from what I've cribbed around the net.

Origin is expensive: the titles being offered through EA are at prices comparable to retail and there are no sales or deals, whereas Steam has links on its Store front page to lists of games under $10 and $5.

Origin is limited: how many publishers does Origin have besides EA? A lot less than Steam. Does it have community groups? I don't know.

Origin is intrusive: data mining is offensive, plain and simple. If we want to let you know our hardware specs, let us opt in, but don't snoop. Steam doesn't do that (AFAIK).

Origin may be "always on": I know you can configure Steam to work offline so you can still play your single-player games in the event of connection issues. I don't know if Origin can do the same.

In conclusion: Steam does everything Origin does and more, with less intrusion into your hardware. It remains to be seen if EA can improve Origin's catalogue, pricing, and connectivity to make it an actual competitor to Steam.

because 99% of people are valve fanboys, i have 3 times as many EA games as i do valve ones, and i like them more then valve, valve is overpraised, though bungie in my mind is the the overall best when it comes to fanbase developer.
o.o?

um ... no .... i only have one game from valve and i still flat refuse to go near Origin, only reason i have ToR downloading now is cause i don't need that crappy bit of spyware on my system.

(and what has Bungie ever done for its fans? Legit question)

OT:

well, lemme see, Steam has,
deals that piss me off for not having any money.
all my games in one easy to get to spot.
nothing locking me out of my games for no bloody reason.
new games i would have never heard of other wise.
new games from damn near everybody.
indie titles, lots of them, and they all look like fun.
it's probably one of the best examples of DRM done correctly.

Origin has
EA titles, nothing wrong wit that, but limited selection is not good when starting a new store.
its intrusive, borderline spyware, and the ELUA takes away consumer rights.
prices aren't competitive at all (from what i've heard)
crashy (again hear say)
lock players out of games for no real reason some times (again, hear say)

which would you rather buy from?

Honestly I have no problem with Steam having the monopoly since it is free and works fairly well. I don't like having to have two other services (aside from Steam) installed on my machine just to play games (some of which bought directly from Steam), but that's just my personal gripe.

Because steam currently has the better business model and the better platform. Steam also has an api for developers to integrate steam features into their game, Origin does not.

Is this a trick question, or merely a retarded one?

Use Origin? Why don't I just let EA staff come into my house, go through my garbage and scrutinise all my personal paperwork while I'm at it? I will not tolerate the privacy-violating bullshit EA expect their uses to put up with for ANYTHING.

Also, Origin is just generally shit, ESPECIALLY compared with Steam.

OT: It's because it's forced on us in order to play their games... duh.

Steam offers sales that regularly offers games for a bargain price. You can find games available on origin that are much cheaper on Steam. Steam/valve REWARD and encourage you to spend money. EA/Origin make you jump through hoops and treat you like your a pirate by default.

The short is that steam offer excellent service, and have built up a lot of trust and good will from its customer base.

EA is trying to force its way into the market by trying to MAKE people people use origin, and giving them no actual incentive to do so than 'WE SAY YOU HAVE TO!'

And lets not get into EA's track record on DRM, DLC and marketing. Especially the marketing. (pro tip - if it takes a game being under £4 on steam for me to buy it because your marketing campaign took me from 'WANTING THIS GAME NOW!' to leaving me feeling insulted, unamused and totally uninterested your doing something wrong. very wrong)

Its very very simple: PR, its as simple as that, Valve has good PR and everyone loves them for some reason(I envy all the people who say valve is nice since they told me to fuck off twice) and everyone hates EA because its EA. personally I haven't had any issues with Origin since they changed my one fear with their EULA, and using the program for BF3 has yet to eat my computer, although my true wish is that more people will start using Impulse which is IMHO the best digital platform (or at least until gamestop ruins it and scares everyone away)

To say it in a short answer I dislike Origin because it freezez my whole computer for a couple of minutes and I usually have some kind of connection problems with EA serves. And for Steam all of my friends are already there and I can easily purchase some gems while they are on sale, or try my luck on the contests, and Steam gives you free offers while Origin wanted you to pay about 5? to have the christmas calender so you could buy EA games on a discount, that was a big confusion moment for me and my friends.

(And yes I know my computer may be a bit old and slow if launching Origin lags it.)

Um no, it is because Origin is currently an unpolished t*rd that is forced on us by EA if we wish to play their games.

EA tried to get us to use Origin of our own free will via it's Digital Distribution system however it's list of benefits was no where near the worth the effort, after all why download install and run EADM and then put up with the nonsense of limited installs a crappy back up system and shock horror the potential of having to deal with EA customer support, when I could just go in to a store buy a game and just install it.

So shock horror EADM failed to do what EA wanted it to do, so they tweaked it, renamed it and then launched it with BF3 as a requirement to be installed to play the game. Now that sound to different to what Valve did with Steam and HL2 and yes it got a lot of flak for a prolonged install, a tedious update, dodgy servers and the fact you need Steam to play HL2. The thing is that was a decade ago and while many may have forgotten the issues Steam has the fact that Steam had them does not excuse EA for having issues with Origin.

- The fact that it is still Beta despite having been out in one form or another for five years.
- The fact that updates aren't done automatically it asks you to update your games then updates them. The Origin update system is even worse, as it closes Origin, starts a full download and then a full install system and then places a new desktop icon and if you don't notice it will set itself to start automatically when you boot your computer. It will also ask you to re insert your user name and password. Steam does all this as a background service and only requires a restart.
- Server downtime is a joke, more correctly what Origin does when it can't connect is a joke. Steam tells you their is an issue connecting (although chances of seeing that message are next to none.) Origin plays dumb and tells you that it is your fault for not putting in the correct user name or password.
- Origin accounts being linked to EA forum accounts, frankly that is beyond a joke. Bans on the forums result in you being unable to access games.... really?

The fact is Origin is no worse than the issues Steam had at launch but that doesn't mean it can be forgiven. If this was ten years ago and Steam had just launched then it could get away with its problems, but it isn't. It has been 'launched' in to a market that is dominated by a system that does everything it does and it does it easily, without issue and in a polished way. Then you have to consider that Origin has been in development for five years so it is even less forgiveable that it has the issues that it has.

Put it this way, I have one game that require Origin and every day after an update the torrent sites get checked for updates to the Origin by pass cracks. That is the worse recommendation for Origin that I can think of, I have the option to use it will I use it? No!. The same situation exists for Steam, cracks that by pass it exist, but I am happy to use Steam.

Reasons range from people not trusting EA (due to things like the forum ban = game ban problem, issues with the original EULA, Origin breaking randomly, EA's lacklustre support etc.) or that the majority of people who want a DD client are already on Steam (as are all their mates), Origin doesn't offer anything new or better so they've got no reason to switch.

I don't use Origin because they tried to slip that spyware shit unnoticed. Then when there's an outrage on the internets, they're like
"Oh well, at least we tried! Teheehee! We cool n' all, internet?"

No. I'm not fucking cool with it. Even if you've pulled the spyware, it's the principle that remains. You did it in the first place.

So, no. Not going to buy any title that's bound to Origin.
