I don't quite understand why people have been proclaiming the PC gaming is "dead" for so long I mean I go to the store and there's still a big selection of games..and many games coming out this year

also I know to do it properly you have to buy/build som monstrosity of a machine...but I have my laptop which works reasonably well graphics wise and runs most things on High (though I wouldnt trust it to run Crysis) ok I'm probably not doing it "properly" but anthing that can run far cry 2 on high is good enough for me
2 Things:

1. It's a misconception that you need some monstrosity of a machine. A gaming rig these days, with a good sized monitor, can easily be gotten for under $1000. I saw a great PC at walmart (yes walmart) about a year ago for like $600 that only needed a video card and it would shred through pc games.

And, since others have given good real answers, I'll go all conspiracy nut for number two.

2. Only big companies are saying PC gaming is dying or dead, man. See, big companies like Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, EA, Activision. See, man, these companies make more money off the console version of the games. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all get a bit of the money sold for any game on their system, but no hardware manufacturers get a cut of the pie for a pc game that's sold. So they are forcing the general population aka the sheep to think PC gaming is dying and that all they need is consoles. And the 3-D man, don't buy into it. That system is set up to push advertising thoughts directly into our brains. Before you know it, you'll be drinking mountain dew and eating dorito's while playing your xbox 360. or drinking Coke and eating hot pockets while playing your playstation. tin foil man, it stops it. But they know that, man, and are working on ways around it. Keep your head down man, once they know you aren't part of the herd they'll come for you.

No its not dead.

The notion comes from its evolution.

Someone can argue its dead based on exclusivity.

If you look at PC gaming and remove all MMO titles and titles that are ports of console titles you can see your left with only a handful of top shelf releases per year and a shit ton of smaller more indie titles and casual gaming efforts. Now with PSN & XBL breaking more and more into the indie/casual realm its taking a huge chunk out of what little was left on the PC plate.

This year what did PCs get as exclusive titles? Starcraft 2, Civ 5 and arguably the leader of the pack in Indie/casual was Amnesia the dark descent. Beyond that name 10 other non MMO exclusive and notable titles this year. If you cant then you see why people think PC gaming is dying, when you compare to any console and see how many games are released per console per year.

I wondering how all the people that keep saying that PC gaming is dead or dying are able to post here, since they obviously don't own a PC.
I just find it funny how "console gaming" is trying to be PC gaming. Considering the path consoles have been taking they are not moving away from PC's but towards them in terms of UI.
I don't say it is dying, I own a PC, but it is for work so games are not much of an option.
Until consoles can actually capture the depth of computer games, the computer gaming genre is in no danger of dying. Given the cut down stuff they send to the consoles, that won't be fore some time.

It isn't neccesarily dead or dying, it's just reached it's peak number of users and that number is slowly dwindling. The PC market is also dwindling becuase all of the consoles have almost the exact same game line-up, and with less lag. Also, on the console end, there's less a worry of hackers. We just need some more exclusives, and better made machines. Unfortunately, better machines equals more money. But that is the cost to save PC gaming, alas.

Console games are currently at their peak, they use the maximum power their consoles can supply, they are pretty much at maximum graphical capability. While this is great news for Xbox and PS3 gamers, it's a knife through the heart for PC gamers.
PCs are constantly advancing and becoming more and more powerfull, but due to the popularity of consoles, devellopers are making games primarily for the consoles because they will get more sales, which limits the graphical power when they get released on PC.
So while consoles stagnate because they can't be upgraded easily, PCs rush ahead but with no games that can use their full potential.
The only way to remedy the situation would be for Microsoft and Sony to release new consoles every 2 years, which just isn't possible financially.
I'm quite happy with that. I just bought a new PC that can play any current gen title I've tested on high settings, and since I can't afford to do that every year it's reassuring to know that I'm not likely to have problems running future titles until at least the start of the next console generation, which I'm guessing will be when games take their next leap in system requirements.

PC gaming has not died, but it has become more of a niche gaming devise. This is do to the fact that most games can be easily tampered with, and accounts for most games can be hacked. (I've lost my WOW account to hackers, making the game not worth returning to when I got a new computer.) so most big games tend to be for the counsels, which are easier to control, and hackers are more contained.

So when PC games come out, they are eather to big to effectively do much to it, to small for hackers to care, or closed off so nobody cares what you do with it. But many games for the PC can easily end up on a counsel, making the PC more of a starting point for small time games.

Let's get one thing straight:
Id Software started out by making a clone of Mario for the PC. Yes, Mario. (IIRC it was "Dangerous Dave in Copyright infringement" or something or another.) After Nintendo proved disinterested in the port, Id Software went on to create Commander Keen. The rest, and the start of the space marine/ww II tropes in first person shooters, is history.

That story should show two things:
PC Gaming has and will continue to play second fiddle to consoles, and PC Gaming will always be where true innovation happens.

personally, I think its fine. If it could ever be called "dead" it would be because the best gaming PCs are exspencive and consoles are more easily accessible. I'm not a PC gamer myself so this is a rough guess

PC gaming is not dead! It won't die until they import customizable keyboard/mouse controls to replace those Charlie Foxtrot gamepads.

Having just bought 11 PC games in the past 48 hours (paying a grand total of $55.40, including three separate buys for under a buck!) I'll say anyone who says PC gaming is dying needs to get a Steam account. Like, now. Before the sale's over.

I don't think it's dead in the slightest, just that console gaming is growing exponentially over the years. The big issue with PC gaming is that no one had a good enough computer to play great games, which is where consoles stepped in. They provided a cheaper and more focused alternative for those that weren't computer savvy.

I see it only getting better, as computers become faster and cheaper and games become more optimized for the platform. The internet finally becoming the norm in the world is causing more and more people to get computers.

Lets admit that gaming, computers, and tech in general has gotten better and better VERY fast. As the older generation gets replaced by the newer generation, I see every household owning a computer.

Of course my generation is being quickly replaced by the social media and "flash" games generation... I'm stuck in the middle of two very different types of people, I imagine I'll be pretty awkward in my later years :p

PC gaming? Watch it increase massively in 2013, when consoles go all motion controls.

(Hell, I'd argue the expansion has begun with the digital distribution revolution. The PC has thousands of indies, the vast majority of which will never see a console release).

I guess that this must be a cyclical thing because I remember when the pc gaming was supposed to be dying back in 1997 because the average pc game couldn't compete with the power of the playstation in terms of graphics, music, and ease of use.

But also, I remember when World of Warcraft was supposed to be the final nail in the coffin of the console game because console did not have enough memory, ram, or connectivity to the Internet to compete with it.

I have read articles from the early 90s claiming that PC games in general were going by the wayside because windows 95 was coming out.

Then Duke Nukem supposedly killed the FPS genre. Now, it is Halo doing the same thing.

The point is that, I would not listen to experts in this because they are always wrong.
