It really wasn't, puzzle games are a rather popular medium... Portal was simply the first highly polished puzzle game to have mass appeal to the FPS/Counterstrike crowd.

Personally I enjoyed Lemmings more.

it's not your run-of-the-mill FPS..

i was skeptical about it when it dropped due to the fact that im not a half-life or Counter strike fan and assumed it would be about as intresting to me as the afore mentioned titles...

i loved it.. i think without a doubt it is the most fun you can have in 90 minutes, and the challanges are great too! i reeeealy wish they would have added some form of DLC for it to expand..but i think that the reasoning behind it would be to keep it nice and entirely simple.

puzzle games are awesome..then there is Portal.. hold on to you hat and get your dancin' shoes on...

I'll give you the same answer to you that I gave to the guy who asked why the Dark Knight is so popular.

I may like Portal for it's witty satire, while Johnny Otherguy belives it was the Portal gun and the puzzles that made it great, but then there's Susan Thirdperson, who belives that the game wasen't that great.

Opinons exist for a reason. They help us decide what we enjoy and makes all of us mentally diffrent and if there is anything worse then Flame threads, Religion Threads, Vs Threads, I hate ___ Threads. It's these threads because basically your asking "I didn't enjoy this game. Tell me why I should like it!"

Because it was a good game, that tons of people enjoyed, and found nothing wrong with.

I still think it is great. I have a few friends that have played through it, but don't think it's the greatest. But they think Call Of Duty is the best game ever.

... you hadn't completed it in that time? :O

it was good because the puzzles were really clever and because of the dialogue from glados. that's basically it... that's all it needs to be...

puzzles and dialogue were all monkey island had too and that was genius

This also means that players will identify with the game to the point of becoming fiercely loyal, taking any criticism about the game as a personal assault against themselves, and so anything other than a overwhelmingly glowing opinion of Portal will be met with hostility, because their pathetic little ego's can not take the crippling blow of the realization that they are nothing but sheep being led through a maze, like a mouse on a leash.
I think you mean "big" egos. A high opinion of yourself is to have a large ego isn't it?

But I guess you were just using "little" as a random derogatory term.

Admittedly the puzzles aren't that challenging, but if they were they would definitely alienate a lot of people. I like to think portal found a good balance in terms of difficulty.

I enjoyed the first two levels. Than the levels started to become more and more repetitive. Once you gain a basic understanding I flew through the levels without much though - getting stuck on the lava part once and that was it.

I had more fun with that 'princess in the tower' game the devs made during college.

Im very curious why Portal is considered one of the best games of all time, i played it on ps3 for about 4 hours and got really bored really fast lol. I don't mean to offend anyone, is it just becasue of the physics engine or something??? help lol
Well Portal is a puzzle game, so obviously some people will hate it no matter what. That's probably your problem is you were bored with it.

That being said, Portal is not one of the greatest games ever (in my opinion). However, it is very good.

The biggest reason is that Portal explores a unique concept and executes it perfectly. The second reason is that it offers great dark humor, which is sometimes enough to justify playing through the game even if you don't like puzzle games. Also, I think the game has great atmosphere and can be very immersive at times.

But there's no law that says you must like Portal.

1: It's original, which is something unique compared to the other games released recently.
2: It's a great concept for a puzzle game that adds a bit of FPS into the mix.
3: It's humour is Exellent!, freaking amazing work with the dark humour in it.

That said, its just freaking awesome.

Clever, funny, fun to play, highly creative, brilliantly executed, hardly repetitive, simple to pick up, stylized, atmospheric, and as the ending credits rolled I was laughing and wanting more.

I've never played anything like it, or that made me feel the way that game did.

I think the main problem was you played it on the PS3. It works much better on the PC, as you can move and make portals so much more fluidly.

Also, I wouldn't call playing it for four ours means you found it boring. The game isn't even 4 hours long, so you must have beat it and wanted to play again, or you're pretty bad at the game. The PS3 controls don't help (this also applies to 360 controls, not trying to dis the PS3, just console fps's :p).

No, I mean exactly what I wrote... small ego's.

If someone needs a video game to validate their intelligence then they have a very small and fragile ego, regardless of how much bravado they tag onto it, they are still insecure, have a low self esteem and small ego's highly susceptible to flattery and other such deceptions.

Now this is not true for everyone who enjoyed Portal, Portal was a very fun game, solid in design with some exceptionally witty dialogue. But there is a disturbing number of people for whom my original statement holds true.

Its the same reason that Monty python has such a prevalence in nerd culture, the same people quoting "The cake is a lie the cake is a lie the cake is a lie!!!" are the same sort of people who would sit around and repeat various Monty Python sketches at one another until any semblance of humor and wit, let alone spontaneity had been wrung dry long ago.

The subtext of such exchanges should read like:

"You are smart like me, because you know the same joke and/or reference so we can identify with each other and bond in safety knowing that there shall be an unwritten contract between us that you will never expose my weakness and I shall never expose yours."

Portal was a way for old school nerds to stand out in the sea of Halo/Madden fratboys, and identify themselves to one another without being shoved into their metaphorical gym lockers, because their was a high chance that the Madden/Halo Fratboy rather enjoyed Portal enough to gloss over the hardcore nerd populace that was being drawn to it like flys to shi...honey.

I think you had it spoiled for you. My friends talked about it endlessly when it came out, and I didn't get around to playing until about a year later, and I wasn't impressed by any of the humor, and the puzzles weren't new to me. I can see why people would really enjoy it, but I thought it was largely meh.
