I often feel the general public shouldn't judge an art form without significant research, but we are all entitled to opinions of our own. And musical taste more than others varies person to person, differentiating based on emotional feelings, or cultural implications. Kesha herself fits a suitable mold of photogenic, pleasing tonal quality, and most importantly charisma. My personal review of her body of work is barely passable, but it's the mass public that decides what musicians get mass publication.

Personally I judge music based on composition, poetry, emotion/attitude, and I always appreciate something new being brought to the table. Lets face it, beautiful and passionate music is released every day, and there is truly something out there for everybody. However, you must admit that it is your ignorance (or sheer laziness to listen to top 40 radio) that this wealth of art passes by. Never be complacent with what society has to offer, demand more from local radio, support aspiring artists with real talent, and remember my cardinal rule. Every single musical genre is good, but all music is most definitely not.

Her terrible synth-pop fills me with murder frenzy.
I hate how synthesizers are being used to make up for lack of talent nowadays.

People like Kesha and Justin Bieber are popular because they are manufactured to be popular.
It's like asking why a properly marketed and developed product sells.

They take focus groups, look at existing trends, find out what people like and want, and then take some half-way decent singer, throw 10 auto tunes on them to make them sound perfect but not fake (I work in audio production, that's how it works), take some half-assed written song that fits the market research they did with a beat, and market the crap out of them by pouring millions of dollars in to promotions.

What happens? They become popular because they were created and groomed for that reason.
Welcome to pop music.

Yay, for unoriginal posts complaining about unoriginality, but this has to be posted.

Contains nasty words.

My god, If i look at the top 40 in the UK, i will see more than 20 songs in which i go, NO YOU CAN'T SING! People in the charts in this country are dire, just dire, with the exception of some. No n-dubz, no tine tempah, no cheryl cole (I could carry on) you can't sing, you just CAN'T. Ndubz are by far the worst. Chavs are being paid to act like chavs, and are getting massive amounts of money. What is this i dont... FACEPALM. What sucks the most is people like this will get paid a lot of money, where as the people who can actually sing won't even be heard of, whether or not you can count that as a bad thing.

I found that 'Fight For This Love' song hilarious though, since it was played a lot while the rumours of her divorce were spread around :-D
If you change the word "love" to "house" it actually makes the song worth listening to. :D

I can't stand her music. They're all about partying, getting high and doing what every generic slut does. Seriously, it has no point! I'm waiting for when she hit's "The Wall" when sales drop to nothing and she fucks herself up somehow. *Nerd Rages*

The power of opinions means any crappy singer can think they're good and get away with it.

Lol, I'm trying to put up a photo and failing miserably. I think she is hot anyway lol.

Someone else has probably already done it, but here you go.

Just put [ img ] before the image and [ /img ] after, sans spaces.

I don't know. she's decent (7) in that picture, but normally kind of freaky.

These are questions that the world may never know.
Because teenage girls control the majority of the mainstream music industry,

I don't think Cheryl Cole has an inkling of talent. I think she has a pretty face, but that's not something you base your career on.
Uh, good madam. This is 2010. Of course she can base her career on it!

I was actually listening to "Tik Tok" when I saw this thread. I find that mildly amusing.

As for why she's popular, my guess would be because her songs are pretty damn catchy. But then a good pop song IS catchy, but that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Kings of Leon.

How the fuck did that fucker get signed

Yes the BAND is good but the singer sounds like he has throat cancer mixed with shit.

Yet every **** loves them.

I really cant stand them

Another thing I hate is those people who want to be "Unique"

They do realize hundreds of people are THE FUCKING EXACT SAME.

-Spacker Out
The singer sounds like he has throat cancer mixed with shit... interesting...

Anyhoo, Caleb(the singer of Kings of Leon) has a genuine raw quality to his voice and that's what makes him and the band so appealing to people. I know it doesn't appeal to everyone but seriously... throat cancer mixed with shit?! I didn't even realise shit could make a sound!

OT: It seems to be fashionable at the moment to sign plain-looking, possibly semi-talented people with lukewarm songs in a bid to connect with the target audience, much in the same way that signing artists with accents (fake or not, I'm looking at you Lily Allen and Kate Nash) seems to be a popular trend in Britain at the moment. Probably...

Soooooo, they are the same person then?

Well, people like things that are safe, so its easy why Kesha is popular, she makes music that has a large fanbase. Bands like Anamanaguchi (I know, you havnt heard of them) wont ever get popular because they arn't what the masses want.

And my biggest WTF! moment in music, easy, when I first heard a Slipknot song and thought "These people have fans how?"
