And in my area, the summer was pretty stupidly hot: we were regularly getting upwards of 30 degrees on the hottest days, and we set new records pretty regularly.

I live in South Ontario and it gets really hot here in the summer *coming from someone who doesn't like the heat*. I want to move to Nova Scotia eventually, and the summers are better next to the ocean.
Winter here, and I love the cold. In the summer, however, it usually goes above 100F. So, my summers are hot, but it isn't summer.
Well, I'll tell you what:
Right around now the Southern Hemisphere receives more direct sunlight than the Northern Hemisphere. Since the rays are striking at a direct rather than an oblique angle, they are spread over a smaller surface area, and the amount of energy delivered for that area is greater. Direct solar radiation also travels a shorter distance through the atmosphere, so it loses less energy before striking the ground.
In addition:
The sun is above the horizon longer in summer (this particular image is for the Northern Hemisphere, but switch June and December and flip the sun arcs so they dip to the south and it will work for you), so has more time each day to provide heat.
It also happens that the Earth is about 5 million kilometers closer to the sun in January than in July, which sounds like a lot but is only about 3% of the average distance. It's possible that this could lead to warmer summers in the south than in the north, but the south has a higher ocean to land ratio, and oceans tend to moderate temperatures, so the impact might be negligible.

I'm in Queensland and it was pushing 30c when I got to work at 6:30 am yesterday. Then again, that's nothing compared to Moranbah, in central QLD. Was getting tops of around 46c when I was out there 3 weeks ago.

australia is well I hate summer at least with winter you can alway put more clothes on summer there is a limit to what you can take off and since my housemates are stingy with the aircon must nights its a pain to fall asleep and its not waking up soaked insweat
It's... rainy, and cold. In fact we've had ice-rain but no snow yet. I live in BC Canada, so that's actually relatively cold for this time of year. Normally it's about 2-5 degrees Celsius in the winter... and normally tops out at around 25 degrees in the summer.
