Why is that some people act like game that don't innovate aren't worth playing? There are a lot of great games that don't do anything new.

The uncharted series and god of war series are great examples of this.

Sometimes ideas are original because anyone with common sense knows they are bad.
Sometimes ideas are cliche' because they are so good that everyone uses them.

Gears of war of war, sounds kind of bad ass

OT: I agree, but really does it matter if people don't find it innovative. It's never been a buy changing argument for me.

I never really cared if in innovated if it was fun. Who honestly cares if it's new if it does something that's older better than any other game?

Actually the original Gears of War's one button cover system was innovative at the time. No one had ever approached that way of cover so intuitively and well thought out.

I think your not innovating if the product of the innovation isn't fun. At least in games, of course. If a game can polish an old idea to such a fine degree that the experience is just fun than I don't mind it not being innovative.

I like games that take existing elements of genres and instead of adding new gimmicks, focus on making everything work properly.

There's only so many innovations you can make with most games genres it's really all just 'go here get this come back' or 'go here shoot this'.

Do you mean Gears of War or God of War? 'Cause I don't think other games did the Gears of War cover system before Epic did. I would call that pretty dang original...

Things usually become cliche because they work well. Halo is considered generic by those who don't realize that it's generic by its own standards: at the time, it was not at all. MMORPGs are often largely copies of WoW, and any time they try to deviate from the system, people complain that it's not as good. Sometimes things just work well, so people use them. It may not be very original, but it sure as heck works.

Fact is, I'd rather play a generic (but well-designed) game than most games with little more than originality to their name. Especially if the generic one has a great story (which is why I'll probably never get tired of the Final Fantasy series: they do a pretty good job mixing it up anyway, though).

Innovative games can still fail. Mirrors edge for example. Innovation is good but there are other parts of a game that I prefer, like the story, combat (if there is combat) and replay value.

It depends on the game. If it's copying a boring game style, it's safe to assume it's going to be boring (all FPS games). On the other hand, Ratchet and Clank hasn't changed its platformy style, and it's still the only PS3 game I want to play.

Many of the games that we cite as being "The first to do X" are actually not.

GTA 3? Officially the SECOND freeroaming open-world game, after something in Japan that very few people bought. And possibly carmageddon.
Doom? The SECOND first-person shooter after Wolfenstein 3D.
Do you know that many people who played Guitar Hero 1 or 2?
I actually just got Elite Beat Agents. But apparently it had a Japan-only prequel called "Osu!" While I'm sure it has its own followings in a way, I would guess there's a reason EBA is famous.

But these games actually did things BETTER by polishing and making sure the experience was suitable. That's far more important than people realize in game design. There really are innovations in "the way your mouse moves for camera control" that not even all games get right. In very simple terms, I probably couldn't set Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer apart from Generic Modern Shooter 7, but it's all the details, minor features, and tiny things that matter so much.

innovative games are fun, and getting something new is always fun, but sometimes playing a game that doesn't innovate can be just as fun, too.

True, besides, it's innovative if you've never played a game of its type before. I point to Warrior Within which was my first action platformer and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

well there must be something more specific then it being new that´s fun for you?

for example me any good shooter with a awesome, powerful shotgun makes me purr like a cat with a ball of yarn, heck I can even forget a games shortcomings sometimes if it has a shotgun that allows me to play "will it blend?"

while for example my friend enjoys a game just because it´s fantasy.

I agree with everything else though.
What about Winback on the N64? Was that before KillSwitch? I can't remember.

I heard that games cover system was awful but Gears of War came along and made it better.
