You're all just crabby because WE WON THE CIVIL WAR.
It was an industrial society up against an agricultural society. Even speaking from south of the Mason Dixon. What did you THINK was going to happen?

Suck it, everyone south of the Mason Dixon!
Hey, I'm just saying.

Northern states rule.
I'll be really honest, I don't particularly care for this argument. In many ways, both sides equally suck. I'm a Southerner and I'm proud (and about as far away from the white trash stereotype as you can get), but that doesn't mean I don't see the flaws of the people of the region.

I want to keep this going.

But it seems you're taking it WAY to seriously.

Ignoring the Civil War, the reason most people nowadays associate space with Southerners is partly due to Starcraft's hicks, but also the fact that the majority of NASA launches come from Florida, and are controlled from Houston, Texas. Just sayin.

Am I the only one sick of this? The Confederacy was NOT a good thing and my ancestor fighting on the Confederate side during the Civil War is a dark part of my family history. So can we please stop this? And why is it always a southern condereracy (hell, starcraft puts the freaking bars&stars on the starships)? Is it because of that old phrase," The South shall rise again!," or is it because of everyones fascination with the space cowboy, or even there referring to the frontier of the West during the early years of the USA and how space is the final frontier?

Am I the only one that's pissed off about this or can someone atleast explain it to me.

Not at all. I just believe that the War itself was an inevitable event, but the consequences of it have just dragged on far longer than they should have on both sides. I just would have thought at this point that the "North vs. South" argument would be moot at this point.

Because if you give the obviously tactically superior South rivaling or better technology, it's obvious they would win.

Until the Republic of Texas takes over everything :p

Someone wrote a whole series of books, based entirely on the fact: A government hating, racist prick time traveling to the civil war and teaching the South how to produce AK-47s.

I never figured out what was more hilarious, that the author honestly seemed to think the South should have won, or that he basically writes about how utterly fucked up the world would be if they had won.

Understandably though, the south finds pride in reenacting this war, which in my opinion they should be ashamed, not proud. They choose to relive this as a proud moment even though they lost and if not only partially, they were fighting for something that today would be deemed really racist. Its like if the germans reenacted WW2.

To put this in context, I'm on neither side as I live in Wyoming.

...Because a Confederacy is a type of Government similar to a democracy, but with more freedom given to the states. Its probably the best way to govern a galactic body of planets that are several light years away.

There are other Confederate nations out there other then the Confederate States of America you know. Just because a fictional government body becomes a super power in galactic politics doesn't mean the South rose again and reached into the reaches of space.

OP needs a grip. A big grip. It's fiction so someone wanted it that way. Want to know why they wanted it that way ask them.

Then again I could be reading your question completely wrong. It is hard to understand.

For everyone else. Quit your goofing you knuckleheads. Just because someone posts some gibberish foes mean you all have to do the same.

I think you are just a slight bit touchy. As an earlier poster said, the USA was a confederacy before it became what it is now. It didn't work so they revamped it and made the constitution. And the fact your ancestors fought on that side is not a dark part of your history. MY guess is they were fighting for their brothers and family and to keep the north off their land. Which is noble and pretty normal. Also most people are VERY undereducated when it comes to the reasons for the war and the fact that the CSA's flag was not the bars and stars but a single star on a blue flag. The stars and bars was a battle flag, only to be used in combat......I see no combat.

P.S. I live in Alabama, am proud and am by no means a hillbilly(though I know some) You will find Hillbillys in Ohio, West Virginia, and even up in the New England area, so quit sterotyping the south.

No, I understand the difference. I just have a major dislike of the topic, mostly due to years of having to listen to elderly relatives on both sides just trash talking about it. Just bugs me a bit still, I suppose. Did not mean to be off-putting with the cynicism, though. Honest.

Yeah, that never made sense to me in the least. Not as a kid and not now.

America loves the under dog.

That's a lot of it. Generally speaking, though, the problem is largely that the war is so Romanticized in "pop history."

No, the South probably wouldn't have won with more men (their industry was still far too inferior). In fact the worst thrashings the south typically got happened when the sides were the most even (i.e. Gettysburg and Sharpsburg/Shiloh).
No, the North wouldn't have won earlier with better generals. The ended based mostly on simple war-weariness and the south losing the battle of attrition.
And NO, the war was not fought to end slavery. That didn't come into play until half-way into it. The war was mostly a contest of two contrary socio-economic systems.

Most of what people think they know about the war is wrong. If you're interested, I highly recommend Shelby Foote's "The Civil War: A Narrative." It's all factual, but presented in the form of a narrative and written by a novelist, so it's the easiest to read history book I've ever encountered. Still, it's a hefty task as the it's a trilogy and the shortest book is almost 1,000 pages.

I'm just confused as to why, if you were going to be a cynic (Which, believe me, I have no problem with), you'd choose to quote my wonderfully whimsical post.

...I just wanted to bring joy to these masses...

Eh, too many reasons to count really, but really the practicality of a Confederacy in space. A central government is bound to fall apart, so give them some freedom and you have a chance. In Orson Scott Card's later books about Ender and the Starways Congress, it shows that a centralized government would only be successful if the population was similar to "Mother Russia's" or there was some way to keep everyone status quo. (The Ansible. Instant communication devices on every planet and starship.)
