Do you mean the charlie chaplan? Don't let one monster ruin a hair piece, that is steeped in tradition.
Right, thats my point. 1 person ruins tradition. But like someone said before, Nazis ruined many things, so I guess the question is answered:

He is evil = mustache is evil
or
mustache /= evil, but looks ridiculous.

Hmmm...why is the 'one of the most evil men in hitory'-tache a taboo...that sure is a tricky one.
And stop calling it a beard, they're two very different things.
I think the question is justified, sorry to insult your intelligence ;)

But I don't really see how it is...it's a taboo to wear the same style as a horrifically evil man the same way it's a taboo to joke about a horrific even in history. Simple.

Hello dear Escapists,

I recently thought about this: Why is the "Hitler mustache" taboo?

You cannot wear a beard like this in public without getting weird looks, right? Some Nazis "rock it", but why don't "normal" people?

Hitler was not the only one with that type of beard, in fact, many people had it (most famous probably Charlie Chaplin). And I do not think it is taboo because Hitler is a symbol for evil. Stalin's beard is not considered weird today, although he was a gruesome dictator as well.

Thoughts, please.

Because the west edified Hitler as the embodiment of all evil. He's been called a potential anti-christ by some of the crazier dooms-day theorists. We needed an enemy during WW2, and the soviets were temporarily on our side, so it couldn't be them, therefore we built up Hitler as the source of all evil and that is why his mustache is taboo.

It just genuinely looks bad, and it's associated with Hitler, who everyone knows was an evil bastard. There are people who don't know about Stalin's evil bastardry.

Stalins beard was just a normal mustache, hitler's was iconic, just like Lenin's and was made in this purpose. It was ment to make his face memorable, making it his brandsign. And it worked well.
Off Topic: I never knew what Lenin looked like, but when I searched him, I immediately got this guy point.

On Topic: It's the Icon status, it's too recognizable. We associate it with Hitler on sight.

It's meant to be Groucho Marx. Bugs Bunny did that bit a lot but they don't show it on TV anymore because he would always be puffing on a cigar. On a related note it Groucho Marx didn't actually have a tache, it was boot-black.
That had occurred to me, but didn't know if it counted without the accompanying nose and glasses.

"Why is the HITLER stache a TABOO"

I'm pretty sure you answered your own question. I'm assuming you know that man is the embodiment of everything negative in our culture?

It looked good on men from 1900 to 1920s, but I don't think anyone should wear it unless they also have on double breasted suit.
