"Tragedy is when I prick my finger. Comedy is when you fall down an open man-hole and die."-Mel Brooks.

It's all perspective.

It's all about context. When its intentional its bad when its unintentional its funny. Comedy is always about something unforeseen happening and expectations being reversed. Accidentally hitting someone, didn't see that coming, funny. Intentionally punishing, not funny, twisted.

Because deep down we're all a little sadistic and are just glad it's not us.

I guess the primal reaction of seeing someone else suffering and enjoying the fact that you aren't is probably the main reason.

Well thanks for making my evening sad by introducing that video to me. I now feel sick.

We find an accidental thing funny. The whole idea is that there aren't severe consequences and that's what is appealing. It's very funny watching on Failblog the cars trying to drive on the ice and just crashing because they're being a jackass but nobody is really seeing any serious consequences. If somebody is being just as irresponsible driving on the ice and they hit somebody, guess what, it's no longer funny.

It's just like some racist or sexist jokes can be funny but not when real hatred is attached to them.
