Because anyone in power will be treated as an idiot. It's been said before: the people don't know what they want. The people in power constantly make tons of sacrifices to keep the world actually running, and most of the time it's not what the people say they want. But if they got exactly what they wanted exactly when they did, we'd all be completely screwed and the world would descend into chaos and anarchy.
Have you seen that look on John Boehner's face every time he's pressured by the Tea Party? Yeah, that's what they nearly all feel all the time.
So give them a break.
Now I'm not saying all of them are good people, but saying they're all idiots is like saying all gamers are 20-30 year old manchildren with no hygiene or self reliance.

Taking a look at the politicians in Australia, none of them are experts in their field. Our Environment minister is a god damned rock star. They are all barristers and lawyers that couldn't earn any bloody money because they were terrible at their jobs.
All the smart people that could run the world are already CEO's of companies, earning all the money they'll ever need. Politicians are idiots leeching off our taxes because they can't earn their own money.

The more people you get together the stupider they are because less and less people agree on certain points so to appease lots of people you have to go to simple common denominators hence why lots of countries/world leaders act like big kids being selfish and stupid acting for only self preservation and gain. Most people are smart enough to see this but not smart enough to do anything about it, its fine acting all magnanimous and benevolent only to suddenly find youre country is suddenly out manned and outgunned because you havent selfishly protected youre own interests with stupid selfish decisions and agreements.
yup self preservation is where its at, its not hard to predict countries general actions to events its all to do with money basically.

Because humans are flawed and vulnerable to corruption, and positions of power come with inordinate helpings of temptation and responsibility. More often than not, the people that seek power aren't the kind of people likely to weild it for the good of those for whom they're responsible. The nature of contemporary politics attracts a certain sort of machiavellian minded individual, the kind of person adapted to 'playing the political game', as it were; they aim to increase their own lot within the system, eventually becoming just another component of it, rather than attempting to master, alter or use it.
