Why is there so much stigma attached to Pokemon?

I have been thinking a lot about this lately. Why is a pokemon ridiculed like it is? If you're over the age of 12 and were caught playing it by a buddy, you would basically be classed as a no hope loser. Yet if that same guy caught you playing FF on the DS. (A game which is no less childish than Pokemon), then he'd more than likely not give a toss.

I don't play Pokemon anymore, but I will certainly buy the new soul silver version, and I'm 18, yet I wouldn't dare tell any of my peers because I woud be ridiculed. I still don't know why this is. Pokemon is essentialy, quite a deep RPG, which requires a fair amount of skill to master. I'd hardly say it's a proper kids game, even if it is aimed at them.

Please, your thoughts and opinions. :)

i dont think Final Fantasy is childish at all. people are ridiculed for playing that for other reasons. But i think people associate Pokemon with being young. the 90's were the time of pokemon and most people want to keep fond memories i suppose. i think its annoying really. but where i live its slightly different to what you say. if i play Pokemon red/blu/yellow/gold/silver at home and tell my friends. They talk about theyre experiences with it and start the game themselves. but if you were to play the card game or watch the show its childish :s i think people have grown up believing manga/anime is childish and therefore dismiss it. Im a nerd and proud though. people can think what they want of me ¬¬ i dont play the card game or watch the series though.....

Well I still play pokemon, I fucken' love it!
Me and my friends bring our gameboys to school and play with each other some lunch times. I'm in yr11 and when we play we all find it fun and the people who pass by and see us playing don't really seem to care. I guess its becuase maybe they think that the novelty factor of playing gameboy at school is kinda cool?
I play pokemon and i dont care.

the show ruined EVERYTHING

There is no shame in enjoying the core games (IE, NOT things like pokemon ranger or mystery dungeon) they are awesome, I still play Platinum, and I recently entered the world of IV breeding and EV training....it is a pain in the ass.

Anyway, the games are great :)

Bulbasaur will f--k you up with that razor leaf, just you wait.

It's a game, like all other games. I was 25 and a sub teacher and played it since the kids did.
They thought adults didn't get it, hell I grew up with games in your rock paper pikachu game. And it wasn't bad, it's like any other DND, RPG game, you have a fighter, mage, ect you level them up, fight them against others, and hope your tactics win.

And there is always the Beer and football subculture that will make fun of everything not beer and football.

That's what I mean. If you get into tactical breeding and EV training, like I used to be. Then it can be a really complex game.

Well, concerning your particular situation, the answer is quite simple, really: Your friends are retarded douchebags.
In general, it's mostly because of the show. The games are solid, if a bit simple, RPGs with an average amount of grind... hell, I'm 23 and I've just dusted off my Emerald edition - great way to keep myself awake and entertained between lectures.

Because it's something you should have gotten over by the age of 12, along with sesame street

I was selling some of my games and my friend came to buy a pokemon game, and he kept laughing, and saying he was excited to get it, but I think he was making fun of me.

But I used to watch the show when I was little. Blastoise... has.. CANNONS ON HIS BACK!! FUCKIN CANNONS!!

Hey guess what guys! We expanded th- I mean FOUND new pokemon! Look there is 4958479 more!
no, the charicters got paper thin, and the story stopped being interesting.

Ash goes to X, team Y is trying to take over the world by capturing Z, ash frees Z, then goes and wins the league

Because all the games are the same, and Silver/Gold were the pinnacle of the series. Everything since has been a repeat of the Dynasty Warriors sort.

Except Vigoroth. That guy rules.

My main man. I have like 3 of these dudes, each with different moves. Flamethrower/Ice Beam/Thunderbolt Vigoroth attacks your weaknesses, then Powerhouse Vigoroth pounds you flat. Status Effect Vigoroth is always waiting in the wings to render your awesome Pokemon worthless.

There is no problem in the world you cannot solve with the proper application of Vigoroth.
