Many people are saying the the characters in Pride and Prejudice are unbelievable, but I find this is just not true.
In most romance novels and movies, The male is shown as some sort of prince charming, having no real flaws or personality. All the more easier for girls to project I guess. And if he does have flaws, they are seen as charming and are only used to further the character's appeal. And at the end of the movie/book they always give up there dastardly ways, thanks to the love of the heroine.
This is not true for Mr.Darcy. He is arrogant, cold and more than a little rude. The looks down on people that do not have a high standing and believe they are not worth his time. For more than half the book, you generally don't like him.
Even as the is confessing his love for Elizabeth, he managers to insult her and her family. He has many flaws and that in turn makes him a more believable charter. As we say, to err is human.
You have to remember that this book was written in a time when a good marriage as all a women could hope for. Love was the thing of dreams and that's where it stayed. The idea of a women speaking her mind or refusing to marry was unspeakable and if a women was to do so, she would most likely be shunned by her family and society. That why a book like Pride and Prejudice was so revolutionary. Some consider Jane Austen to be the first real female fiction writer.
As for To Kill a Mockingbird, this is a great work of fiction. Because it is told through the eyes of a little girl, who has yet to learn the harsh reality of the world, you really get a sense of how meaningless and nonsensical racism really is. It is also filled with wonderful symbolism, such as the mockingbird. Which is used to represent the innocent and how some will still punish them just because they have the power to do so.
I'm not saying to HAVE to like these books. I'm just trying to point out why people like them.
If you had to read these novels has part of a class requirement, I urge you to go back and try reading them again. I know they may not be everyone's cup of tea and I'm not saying to HAVE to like them, but try them again. When the pressure of reading a certain amount by a certain time is removed, they become a lot more enjoyable.
