The other day I was listening to Elton John. The song was "Latitude." What struck me was that, at least in my opinion, it's one of his greatest songs ever, but I've never heard it played on the radio, or anywhere, except for when I or my mom put it on the music player. And that's weird, because it's a damn good song. Same thing goes for "Please" from the same album. A great song that I never hear.

This doesn't just happen with music. I have no idea why more people don't talk about Kati i Amerika by Astrid Lindgren, the inventor of Pippi Longstockings. It's a great book. And even though Rumiko Takahashi is so famous, you never hear anybody talk about her short manga stories, which are every bit as good as her ongoing series.

So what about you? What songs, books, comics etc. by famous creators don't get the attention they deserve, in your opinion?

What immediately comes to mind when someone mentioned Mel Brooks? Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood: Men in Tights...Those are all amazing so of course people would think of those but I'm kind of surprised that Silent Movie isn't seen as being one of the all-time classics by Mel. Maybe it is though...it just seems like it doesn't get talked about enough...though that's probably a good thing...we don't want another Holy Grail...

When it comes to music I feel like people have pushed Iron Maiden on me when what I really needed was Helloween. I like Iron Maiden but there isn't a single album of theirs that I can listen to from start to finish...whereas when it comes to Helloween I haven't come across an album YET that I won't just kinda go through from start to finish. Even Keeper of the Seven Keys pt.3 is freaking awesome. Maybe it's just because I'm an American...Speaking of being an American...

When Anime and J-Pop became huge here in the mid-2000's my friends got huge girl-boners over Gackt, L' Arc en Ciel, Glay *hurk* and, Miyavi *Urp*. I stuck with X-Japan until I found out about Dir en Grey and moved on to Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Mois, etc...but lurking in the shadows the entire time was Seikima II...Fucking Seikima II...What's worse is they've been featured in anime that I used to watch a lot too...Demon Kogure was a bad guy in Fist of the North Star...the band was mentioned in YuYu Hakushou...the band was featured in an OVA (Humane Society) and most recently, Demon Okure is Demon Kogure in the second Yokai Watch movie!

Dude, that singer sounds so much like Bruce Dickinson, that's weird.

That was good though, thanks for bringing that to my attention. I will need to research this further.

Iron Maiden is dope though, but mostly just when Bruce is singing.

For my underrated song, I choose this, by Led Zeppelin

Lot of artists spring to mind, but none more so than Warren Zevon. He got the respect and recognition he deserved from all the other artists, but never the public; he never really broke through to the mainstream, despite having a couple songs that play sometimes on the radio.

Most people only know Werewolves of London, or maybe Excitable Boy. Classics, yes, but by no means his best work. Lot of people probably--unfortunately--might consider him a one hit wonder. That thought depresses the shit out of me.

Dude's the greatest thing you've never heard, and I promise you he's inspired at least one rock artist you listen to. His final performance was on David Letterman, where Dave devoted an entire show to him, and he played, I think, four songs. Knocked 'em all out of the park, cancer notwithstanding.

If anyone deserves more success, it's Zevon. I just wish it wasn't posthumous. Anyway, I could talk Zevon for hours, so I'll just leave it there.
