Why do you care?
Are you insecure about your beliefs?
No. In fact I'm very secure in my beliefs and I love to discuss religion and find out about other people's beliefs. I just feel like the Escapist is not the place for it.
That's why they are in the off topic forum. If the members of the Escapist aren't mature enough to have a thought out discussion about religion, then they should stay out of the thread. There's no problem with talking about religion, it's often the religious fanatics that are to closed minded the talk about a subject they may be wrong on. Notice I said often, it can also be the people on the exact side of the argument that cause problems.
I can agree with that. Any ideas on how to keep the people that start flame-wars out...cause if not the threads will all turn to flame-wars. Hence my posting this thread.

If people feel religion is wrong or right, they want to tell people. They might be in a street, a party or on a forum.

Some people start these types of things with innocent intent, some with malice... but if you approach a group weary of talking about religion (here), then expect a hostile response, no matter how honestly you mean what you say.

look, basically if people want to talk about religion they will. The escapist is an increasingly popular forum area, therefore people talk about things that are important to them - i.e religion, if you dont want to talk about it, simply ignore the threads.

Seconded, people believe lots of retarded things, like that Nintendo is a good game production company, but its the way the world is, and you have to come to terms with that.

I would love to give you an answer but I dont really understand it myself, might have something to do with the influx of new people we have seen.
I'm not as willing as I once was to blame all the forum's problems on the new members. I've seen new members acting admirably and old ones flaming/trolling.

I take it this thread is in response to the recent thread about how religion is apparently for fools? I'm amazed any one even clicked on that thread, it had to have been the most obvious flame bait I'd ever seen.
yes I understand that I cant blame it all on new members I have seen a glimmer of purple rain in many of them and If they stay here long enough im sure we can all get to know them but with the good comes the bad and it only takes 1 to start a thread

This is the off-topic discussion board. In the context of The Escapist, what is it off-topic from? Here it comes....VIDEO GAMES.

If this was a religion-based forum, it certainly would not be off-topic. Seriously, you cannot be that dense.

Let alone the fact that you are not forced by any measurable way to actually CLICK on a topic you are not interested in, and then proceed to read it.
Ok, I guess I didn't really make as big a point of the whole flame war thing as I meant to. I don't mind the discussion but every religion thread I've ever clicked on was a flame war within about a page. No real discussion.
That, is a good question. In order to do that you'd have to have a lot more policing and regulation to get rid of people that purposefully try to insult someone else, or bait them into an internet shouting match.

Otherwise, the only thing you can do is ask questions that can legitimately be debated, and have people respond that are honestly interested in understanding each other's positions, and pointing out strengths and weaknesses in them. That takes a lot of mature, thinking people who have that goal in mind.
So I'm assuming that you now understand where I'm coming from right? I know we take pride in our maturity here, but that doesn't negate the fact that there are enough that aren't mature enough to have that conversations without it devolving into a flame-war.

That is why I don't think the Escapist is a good place for these conversations to happen.

Ever since I joined the Escapist, I've been confused as to why people always bring up religions. What ever happened to being able to talk about games and enjoy it without caring what faith the person that is potentially halfway around the world follows? (Sorry for the awkward sentence, I really tried like 6 times to make it better)

It's just frustrating coming here to see what's up with the gaming community and seeing a bunch of flame wars about religions. I would appreciate it if anybody could give me a legit answer to this one.
Ah, y'see, you took a wrong turn back at /forums/. You wanted to turn left, into /forums/index/9. People talk about games there. This is the seedy part of town, where religious/atheist gang wars rage above discussions of sexuality, while the vagrant youngsters desperately beg for spare change and relationship advice. It's a hard life, but, uh... We get by.

Actually it isn't directly a response. I didn't even click that thread when I saw it cause, like you, I saw flame-bait written all over it.

That thread was, however, the tipping point. I'm just tired of those times when I log on and everything is about religion. And every one of those threads about religions turns into a flame-war.

I know what you mean. I thought we'd had enough of that with all those "Why all the hate on..." threads a few months ago. Go figure.

I do that eventually...but right when I'm on the home page I always see those ones that are being posted on at the time.

Is there a way to filter that so I only see gaming discussion on there? That would be sick.

Honestly i feel alot of people post those threads to try and get the badges. I mean really after the 1st five muslim or jewish threads nothing new is being brought to the table. However they will always attract replies and looks and thus hard to get badges. I do not condone or even really understand this.

I always thought it was kinda ironic that the "Why all the hate on..." ones turned into flame wars fastest.

I think you may have just answered my question. I feel really stupid for not thinking of that before.

Because people are too blinded by their religion and are rather tied to their factless ideals. I am very anti-religion, but I do not bother talking about it here. I do have my own faith, but it is not bound by any religion. I think faith is a great thing, but structured religion is evil in my eyes because it brings out too much bad. I saw a thing in the paper about some church coming together to help anyone of any faith after some tragedy and I thought "If THATS what religion ALWAYS did, the world would be a kinder place" but people in power will always have their own goals and also everyone has to treat it like some sort of club that everyone hasd to want to be in and are bad for not being in it. Really, any God or whatever that cares about whether they believe in them as opposed to those who are just good, I do not want to be involved with. If christianity is right, and their god is real and all this evil is part of his 'plan' then he is evil and I want no part of this plan.

That said, a lot of people like to argue without know it.. Religion gives someone to argue.
Religion is only a hot topic because you don't need any proof or facts to scream your own opinion and beliefs at someone else. So anyone can post anything... so they do.. cause they can't help themselves and believe other people actually give a crap about their opinion :)

Personally I just avoid them.... cause they are nothing but a bunch of self-opinions :)

When I read this topics heading I thought this was going to be a discussion on like.. you know the meaning of life ... and of course we all know the answer to that one.. 42! :)

bet you $20 this thread turns into yet another religious flame war thread though :)

I know, right? I actually found the "Why all the hate on Pastafarianism" thread funny.

Agreed. That was my favorite of the "Why all the hate" threads by far.
