100 is a nice round number. Other than that I know that the max stat is 255 because that's the highest binary can go in an 8-bit memory slot.

edit: ninja-ed ^_^
Part of it could be memory storage, but honestly I don't really think that's it. With so much memory to play with, I hardly think your average developer is going to be scrounging for bits that hard. Also, depending upon the language used, and the specific type of integer an 8-bit number may not hold 8-bits worth of number. In java for example, the sign takes up a single byte, so rather than 255 your max would be 127.
The 255 shouldn't be dependent on language used since it goes down to machine code and binary. Back in the days of NES(I first saw the 255 number in FFI) I am willing to bet it was storage space. Even in the '90s PS1 memory cards had 8megs on them. Do you really think they will spend 4 bytes on each of your stats(like an int number in java)? I don't think so. At this point where we have the memory to actually do that I am pretty sure its done by convention now.

in disgea 3 ... you can level to max level 9999 and then reincarnate your character to level 1 while keeping the stats so you can increase stats again while leveling again!

this had to have created to appease the grinding junkies of the rpg world.
My head just exploded
Then you'd probably like to know you can go inside individual weapons in Disgaea and grind in an "item world" to level up the weapon. (Repeat whenever you get a new weapon, I guess.) This is the kind of game WoW would be if it was single player and had balls.
My head is now non existent. What the fuck!?!?!

I believe there are some "Tales of" games where the level cap extends well above 100 (not sure of the exact number), but Nippon Ichi games still win for flaunting stopping at level 100. It's interesting to note that in one of their games, Phantom Brave, the level cap at first APPEARS to be level 100, but with some fusion it can go up to their traditional 9999.

I had 15. They were Venasaur, Starmie, Alakazam, Kingler, Wheezing, Pidgot, Mewtwo, Dragonite, Umbreon, Vaporeon, Houndoom, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Thyplosion and Gengar.

The real reason is simply that 100 is a notable round number. The number itself implies "complete" or "finished" (100% for example).
In every language is 1 bit used for the sign, but as long as it is not intended to get a negative level a programmer would use an unsigned type.

I honestly don't understand the interest people have with such ridiculous level numbers. Why do you need to have even 50 levels? Or 40? because there are so many levels, you end up levelling up every 30 minutes or so of game-time. And the difference between a few levels is miniscule.

I personally prefer to feel like I've achieved something when a character levels up. Sure, call me old timer or what ever, but I think the D&D levelling system is pretty good: At level 10 you can take on a small army of peasants by yourself, or a few squads worth of your average city-guards backed by a few more experienced seargeants, without any major damage or problems. At level 20 character is legendary, known far and wide for their exploits (otherwise they never reach that high a level), at level 30 character is able to give an avatar of a major god some big migranes, a level 40 the character is effectively a minor god.

In BG2:Thore of Bhaal, the group arrives at the final bossfight at around levels 40-45. Without giving too much away for those rare people who don't know of it, the party (of maximum of 6 persons) then proceeds to kick the arse of the God of Murder reborn. And the only reason the new god, missing only a fraction of a percent of the power the old god had, lasts for over 5 minutes before getting throughoutly pwned is because s/he summons allies in a constant stream, each strong enough to eat major demons for breakfast. Oh, and she keeps running away to regenerate.

So what I'm getting at is this: Make me work for my levels, make me feel I've achieved something. I don't need 100 levels in infitesimal increaments to my abilities. Rather give me just 10 to 20 levels, with well thought out and noticeable system of improvement to my skills, abilities and stats at each level.

I just hate the fact that i have never been able to beat the any of the disgea games. But I'm still going to buy the psp game and play it and later in the future I will finally beat the Prinnies game.

I forgot which one it was, but there was a disgaea type game made by the same people that had tanks and buildings in the game which you could also level up. I got so involved leveling my items that I forgot about the storyline.

I think the real question is why you're playing Kingdom Hearts 2.
Be careful what you say; My inner fangirl teamed up with my inner psycho-*****, and they made keychains and plushies out of Dr. Salvador...
Also, Kingdom Hearts 2 is a solid game by all technical standards: very acessable, tight controls, a variety of things to collect and get, smooth difficulty curve, a variety of allies, enemies, doable minigames, lots of gameplay...
Though the story just gets a little too far from its Disney roots for my comfort, I still enjoy it and think it is definitely a game to check out if you're into Disney nastalgia or Jrpgs.

In the 8-bit era it had to do with the console's memory limitations. Now-a-days I think it just makes a nice round number to stop at. If you don't like the level cap, play Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. I don't even know what the level cap is on that game, but I had 2 of my characters over level 260.
Unfortunately, your characters cap out some time before then.

So, being several years behind, I finally get a copy of Kingdom Hearts 2. I'm now at the endgame, and haven't even reached level 50.
And with most Pokemon games, you typically get to around level 70, tops, for a normal playthrough.
I've played RPGs where there's a low level cap, and in every instance, they drive me nuts, But what is so special about 100 levels?
I understand its a nice little bit of extra for the particularly enthused player, but to me, there's always been a nagging sense of the game being somehow unfinished. Oftentimes, post-endgame adventures only go ten or so levels higher than the main boss; so even when you go for 100% completion, in a lotta games you still don't get to the magic level.
Have you finished KH2 yet?
I was upto LVL 70 on the last stage and I died a couple of times, you could definitely grind to 100 and still have a challenge IMO.

Plus, it's freakin cool to be kickin' ass once you reach the last quarter of LVL cap, watching 10 heartless succumb to a single lightning attack :D

Oh and who doesn't like 100? It's an all-round adored number!
