First thing: Use Libre Office, not Open Office. http://www.documentfoundation.org. It's the same program, but more frequently updated with better stuff. And still open source, of course!

Second, I don't hate Microsoft. Or Apple. Or Adobe. Or any company. There's no more point in hating a faceless corporation than there is in loving one. If someone develops something, it is their right to do with it what they want. If that means sell it, fine. If that means give it away for free, great! If that means never show it to anyone ever, that's sad, but also their right. The right doesn't go away because something was created by a group of people and not just one person.

Now, if the OP was in fact entitled to a full, non-demo copy of Student Edition and did not receive it, he should absolutely pursue this. Websites like The Consumerist [http://www.consumerist.com] have company contact directories and other ways of helping you get the attention of those who can help you pursue your grievance; you might also want to take it up with your PC's manufacturer. However, there's no point in hating the company or the software just because tech support screwed up. Office is still an excellent software suite. And if you weren't owed the full edition, why are you mad you didn't get it?

I'm on Windows 7, and I love it. I think it's incredibly smooth and efficient, it looks great, and it's dead reliable (in fairness, OS X and Linux are also very reliable when stably configured on stable hardware; in 2011, we should expect as much). I have absolutely no problem with paying someone to do something good for me, even if I am opposed to some of Microsoft's more draconian licensing arrangements (though they are still Microsoft's right, for the most part). And yes, I purchased (and use) Office. If I didn't have the money for Office, I would use Libre Office, but since I did at the time and Office was the superior program, I purchased it.

TL;Dr version - Open Source is great, but so are some big companies, contact Dell and ask them for help.

Yeah, I would just get Open Office or whatever. All I have is the free Microsoft Office Starter since I don't need any office programs right now.

Office Starter works pretty well for the basics, actually. No match for the real thing though.

Personally since the 2007 version, I stay as far the hell away from Microsoft Orifice as humanly possible. OpenOffice serves my needs, and is far more intuitive (simply by virtue of sticking to the design of 2003)
Though I may try Libre Office by the suggestions of a couple of people in this thread... How is it with regards to equation editing software (e.g. integration with MathType)?

I'm not sure it's better, but if you suggest it as a feature you're more likely to get your wish.

Some thing microsoft has done have annoyed me. For example, not giving 360s wireless. Also, the absurd amount they charge for the harddrives for the 360. a 20gig will cost you like 70 bucks, whereas you can get an unofficial harddrive that is like 360 for under 100. also, i recently bought windows 7 for my computer and installed it. 6 months later I decided to buy a new gaming machine and found out that even if you buy it brand new, you can only install it on 1 computer.

Microsoft shall henceforth always be referred to as M$

Seen as you've already paid for it you could just..... dare I say it pirate it. I'm pretty sure law states you are allowed a back up copy of every thing you own.

One of my biggest problems is the fact that Microsoft won't give me anything without first having to buy it. For example, I bought this computer and it came with "Microsoft Office Student Edition, 2010". I needed to wipe my hard drive for various reasons. After contacting Microsoft and explaining my situation, they sent me a card that gives me a, get this, 30 day demo of Microsoft Office Student Edition 2010. Has anyone else had this issue? Please post below, and thanks for reading.
When you get a version is MSO Student pre-installed on a Dell laptop, it's a trial. The only way to get around this is to get a license key. If you lost it, it's your own fault.

I've also noticed people complaining about no software CD's. I feel you, this drives me apeshit. Along with all of the Pre-installed shit that comes with them, it's no wonder why people hate windows and computers. Windows is often bogged down with eSobi and all the other garbage that comes with a manufacturers computer that people often associate HP updater with Windows.

With that in mind, If you actually know the Windows OS, or your in the Technical Industry, (I kinda find it funny, Robert Ewing, we're polar opposites, I can never find the solutions to my linux problems online, but have no problem finding solutions foe Windows. Neither of us are looking hard enough.) Microsoft is pretty fucking nice to you. Jumping around is a low-level techie, I've got 3 unused Windows XP keys, 2 unused Windows Vista keys, and 8 Win7 Pro Keys. I write and do RP's, so I jumped on the MSO Enterprise 2007 bandwagon and got 2 keys there. No, you cannot have them. :p

Assuming the old machine is now out of the equation, You realize how long it takes to make a phone-call to say "Yeah, I'm moving the license to a new machine, let me do it."

To which their response would be, "Whatever, go ahead."

L2OS?

ninja'd... also, OP, look into Linux. KDE and Gnome aren't as hard to install and use as you've heard... unless this is a gaming rig you're talking about, in which case, two hard drives and two operating systems can be your friend.
Gaming is quite literally the only thing that Windows is better at (or more user-friendly about) than a modern distribution of Linux.

Loves me some open source freeware. But if your using it for anything too sciencey the spreadsheet app is pretty inadequate, otherwise great stuff.
ALL spreadsheets are inadequate for "anything too sciency". Spreadsheets are an evil accountants' invention and should be avoided for most things. They definitely aren't suitable for most of the uses they get twisted into.

It amazes me that MS can still sell Office with Open Office and the like out there.

If I really thought another OS could replace Windows 7 in terms of supporting all my gaming, I'd probably drop Windows too, however my PCs are mainly gaming machines.

Advocating piracy is against the rules and will probably net you a warning, suspension or a ban. If you want to avoid that, edit your post before a mod gets here. Im not saying this to be a "wannabe forum police" asshole, im just pointing it out.

OT: Thats why I use freeware. Actually, I dont, because I have no need for any kind of office applications at the moment, but there are plenty of free programs that are as good and sometimes much better than the Microsoft counterparts. I believe one outstanding one is called openoffice.

TBH if you seriously buy things like MS Office, well, you have a lot to learn. Im always hesitant to even buy the operating system, buying shit like Office? HELL NO!
If he owns a license to the software its not piracy, I specifically said activate it.
