I've never much cared about the DMC franchise, so I don't really have an opinion there. However, I completely understand and support the reboot to the Tomb Raider franchise. It has gotten to the point where Laura Croft is more joke than character. Everyone (well, most everyone) tends to agree that her physical attributes are so over the top as to not even be appealing, other than in the "OMG BEWBS" sense. I like the fact that they deconstructed her, and started from the ground up, letting the game-play influence her look. Old Laura looked out of place doing all that running, jumping, and digging in ancient tombs. New Laura looks like she does this sort of thing every day. My only concern is that she might look a bit too much like a female Nathan Drake. But for the game settings, she looks great.

Obviously, until the games actually come out, we can't say how well the redesigned game-play will work, but I am hopefully optimistic. They've given the new Tomb Raider a good grounding in the realistic, while still leaving plot points open to the fantastic. I am actually interested in the series for the first time in years. I think this reboot is a great thing for the series as a whole.

Alright let me just throw two things out here:

1) you are a Halo fanboy and the franchise was more or less redesigned for Reach.

2) you can't criticize these for gameplay! They've just been announced, we know absolutely nothing about them yet.

It's not just a matter of these new character designs and personalities are abysmal. Some people might even like them. Its just that the people who like these designs are the people who never enjoyed the character in the first place.

And that's the problem! These new characters are a betrayal to the original fans of the series. The developers basically threw their hands up and gave up on developing the existing characters but found themselves unable to relinquish the use of the intellectual property. Its a blatant cash in to ride on the coatails of the franchise as a vehicle for the writers to insert their egotistically created anime fanfiction character into the leading role.

This a the potential start of a terrible trend in games but we are lucky about one thing. These new characters are so pathetic that noone with taste could possibly accept them. And the games look shitty as a whole. Lets hope these game are as lame as they appear to be so that this trend can be nipped in the bud.
Have you actually PLAYED the new Lara croft game? It's a much better GAME than the previous tombraider games. That's all that matters.

BTW I don't recall the old Lara ever having a personality.

Tomb Raider. I COULDN'T care less what Lara looks like. Seen enough of her. I never spent much time admiring the character either. Not through the narrative and not through her appearance.. Never really cared. The plots were just enough to drive you through the interesting locales to the end, and I usually always enjoyed an entry in the series.
Sorry, that just eats at me inside.

OT: How can you possibly know anything about new Lara's personality? We've seen some very hazy magazine scans of screenshots, and a piece of artwork (where she looks like a man).

Dante, alright, you can begin to form an impression from the trailer, but that's all you can gather from it.

The notion that the people swapping them didn't like the old versions isn't correct; maybe they just feel it's getting stale and would like to take it somewhere else. That doesn't mean they disliked them.

New Dante is a little *****, but I for one am glad that Lara Croft is getting a new design. Seriously, it was long overdue.

And she never had any real interesting personality to begin with. Not that she will now - it's still Chrystal Dynamics that's making it afterall - but atleast they're trying.

take some solace in this, one of the first designs for dante in the new game had nothing but jeans and suspenders on.

on another note, why is every odd numbered devil may cry an earlier prequel? 3 comes before 1 and 5 comes before 3. by DMC7 we will be playing an infant Dante killing demons with a rattle.
I'd play that. And I'll also play DMC5. Unlike most people here, I think character design can be a big thing. But I shall not judge until the game is released.

I don't see a problem with the new Lara, she needed that to be honest.
As for Dante, I can see why its a problem but I really don't care as much as other people do, that is coming from someone who loves the Devil May Cry series.

Wow. Do we even know anything about the personalities of these characters, or are we assuming a redesign means that they will be empty te plates filled by the designers' whims?

All I hear is "New is bad! Old is good! Everything must stay the same, even if the original idea was shitty in the first place!"

Honestly, Lara Croft and Dante have never had much appeal to me as characters. Lara's only appealing trait is her chest, and Dante... well, apart from being a badass guy, he wasn't very likable. Neither character was very human.

If done well, these redesigns will give actual stories and personalities to two originally empty characters.

The redesign for lara croft made me really interested in a tomb raider game.
The other game that did the same was the guardian of light(also not the average tomb raider games that came before it).

first off, fans of the original series liked the games because of their gameplay. good main character personalities were just nice bonuses (although, personally, i cant see how anyone could possibly like lara). second, how do you know anything about their new personalities? the trailer for DMC tells us next to nothing and i think tomb raider actually has no trailer yet. you're worse than yahtzee. at least he doesnt come up with completely baseless speculation in order to be pessimistic about games that havent come out yet.

Indeed.....Then we burn the Heretics for making such a crappy reboot! People can point at me and yell fanboy all they want but unless they understood the story and realized how pissed off some of us were when they decided not to finish up the entire plotline and give us a bit of a Sopranos ending for 2 then they can't talk with any bit of credibility. The story has so much left to go considering the ending for DMC2 and DMC4 left us with so many questions that it all deserves to be connected rather than just ship it to Ninja theory for a reboot.

Seriously those bastards are on my list.

oh for fucks sake get over yourself OP. I've played and loved Lara Croft games in the past and im quite excited for this reboot as 1) I was starting to get tired of the disproportional look that Laura has had for so long and 2) Im interested in seeing the Character in a more vulnerable(and realistic) light and seeing what could have made her into the gun toting badass that she would go on to become in the later games

I don't mind the next tomb raider because it looks like they are not just reupdating lara's visuals while remaking the first game continously and making the same mistakes

But, but. . . Ron Pearlman said war never changes.

OT, I am gonna play Devil's Advocate a bit here and say that games are supposed to be immersive. If you can't picture yourself as a skinny emo *****, then you can't get into the game. And everyone knows that nerds and emos are mortal enemies, just like Jedi and Sith or spaghetti and milk.

maybe google search has failed me, but i don't even see the difference in the new lara croft. So if your complaining that she might have slightly smaller boobies, then YOU are the worst kind of person. also new Dante looks basically the same, same coat, same everything else really, just skinnier and now he has black hair. ooohhhhhhhh how terrible......

Yes the original poster is a fanboy, so what, for the people making fun of him for it, guess what this is a big deal for the series he has a right to be fearful of the change, I would be the same way if the Zelda or Persona games took a big shift like this, and must of you would regret change in your personal favorites too. If you want to make fun of him, make fun of intolerance of differing opinions. That being said I don't like what if seen of the now Devil May Cay, it looks like it's all going to be some sort of dream in a guys head, I don't care what the story is that's a terrible plot twist in a story that just gets a thousand times worse when it's done in a sequel. Plus it looks like both games are trying to cash in on the gritty fad thats been going around, a fad that I'm personally very sick of. I will wait to see what the story, gameplay and characters are like before I make a full judgement but I will say from what I've seen so far it's not looking good in my book.

Where's the proof of this? Why is it all in your opinion? Why do I feel insulted reading this? I already hate this thread after the topic post.

I am looking forward to the character changes in DMC by the way.
