For me it's more stuff like "Now there is no inventory management because that's hard to do well with a controller." I LIKED managing my inventory for each squaddie.
To each his own. I just don't like them because I get OCD about things. Remember Resident Evil 4, where you had the grid (Or Diablo) style inventory? (Or more recently, Deus Ex: Human Revolution) You know how much time I spent arranging my inventory in those?

I like the "once and done" style of things inventory management, especially for multiple units. It's one reason why I use Xcomutil, so I only equip a squaddie once and I only need to worry about it again once I upgrade equipment.

Just reread the GI article after noticing this thread, and I'm definitely excited about the game. There's some noticeable simplification for consoles, but it seems like they're trying to restructure the game in a way that still makes it deep and interesting.

There's something I don't understand though. When a company makes a "modern re-imagining" of a game with cult classic status, they know there are going to be a bunch of gamers that prefer the old system, but would like to try out the new mechanics anyway. So how hard would it be to release a game that's mod-friendly enough that the OG's can alter it as they see fit? I never looked into mods for Civilization or any other Firaxis games, so I don't know if they already cover this. But it seems like a pretty easy adjustment - if you don't like the changes, feel free to make your own game out of the new engine.
