I figured out that I cant gamble where I live(Louisiana)and you have to be 21.

I never understood why that is.It would make sense if 18 year olds would get a gambling addiction but its about self control for that person, so that cant be it.

What would be your thought on this topic.

I never got why the US drinking age in some states is 21 either. It means I can't drink if I visit.

*cracks open a beer in calgary*

It's 18 here.

Same idea with gambling, though I've never gotten the appeal of gambling though. An 18 year old should have the right to waste his money in the same ways of everyone else :p

In the UK it's 18... just saying.

Yeah I don't see the point of the 21 age in the US... mainly because people usually start drinking about 13 here, and almost everyone is by 16.

So legal ages for anything don't really phase me.

I'm about as confused about that as to why the age of consent for legal sex is 16, but the age to view porn is 18. Surely the former is more... 'intimate'.
Actually, no, I', more confused about my example.
And I still have no idea why the age is 21 for where you live. Maybe it is just in your state. Ages vary on things from state to state, country to country.

It's annoying because I'm nearly 20 living in Britain, I can drink, gamble, smoke, order hookers (all in moderation kids!) yet when I go on my holibobs to America I can't even have a beer. Kinda sucks really that America's 3 years behind most other countries (don't cite me on that, I'm too lazy to actually find out if it's true).
More specifically on gambling, I guess that a 21 year old has more of a grip on their moneys than an 18 year old, maybe those 3 extra years makes someone realise that moneys is somewhat more precious.
Then again, I dunno, as long as I can still play on my 2p and 10p machines in arcades it's all good.

Are 16-17 year olds having sex blindfolded?

yeah its weird. I can join the army, but I cant legally buy Call of Duty Black Ops. this is strange.

You had an example? I am the confused.

OT: I don't really have an opinion, other than I don't know why there's an age limit at all, but then I am young and ignorant, so somebody will probably tell me and it will make perfect sense.

The most retarded thing is that in the UK, I can join the army and potentially die for my country before ever being allowed to legally buy alcohol or tobacco. So that implies that my country is allowed to get me killed, but i'm not allowed to kill myself(slowly). It's bullshit, they should either lower the drinking and smoking ages to 16 or increase the age you need to be to join the army to 18.

EDIT: I now realise that you can't be sent on active duty until 18, rendering my point moot. Fuck.

That is rather backwards....

You can join the army at 16 in the UK? That's crazy. That's even crazier than the U.S.'s drinking age. They wouldn't send you on active duty though, right? You'd just be some military janitor while training or something?

It's silly. I think the drinking age should be closer to 16, but at least 18. In NJ you have to be 19 for tobacco products because "OMGAD HIGHSCHOOLERS CAN SMOKE LEGALLY!?!? FIX IT!"

Well in Florida you can buy a lottery ticket at 18 but 21 to gamble offshore because gambling in Florida is illegal

It's related to the drinking age, as most casinos also serve alcohol on the gambling floors. It is easier to ban people under 21 from the gambling floor than to check everyone's IDs and bottleneck access to the games.

short answers:
Is there logic behind it? yes.
Does it really make sense? depends on your perspective.

Isn't the age 21 for things like that because it's still pretty easy for a 16 or 17 year old to pass for 18, but it's more difficult for a teenager to pass for 21?

There's a lot of ambiguity during the teenage years and with the telling of some people's age, so by making the restrictions 21, i.e. restricted to actual adults and completely off limits to all teenagers (as oppose to just the young looking ones with the 18 age limit), it makes it slightly easier for those who have to check and enforce the age restrictions.

Same, when they explain to you why there are laws that no-one follows for legal reasons, please send me the explanation.
I know MANY 14 and 15 year olds who drink, and get genuinely drunk. The law is no boundary these days... *takes skeletons out of closet, cleans knife and hides illegal downloads* People only REALLY do/avoid things out of a strange sense of being moral. That's why I don't drink, not because I'm not allowed to, but because I don't want to.

OT: Here the age is 18, 18 and 16 for just about everything really, so I've never thought about it.

You can also join the army IRL before you can pretend to in Call of Duty. Or have sex before you can watch someone else at it.

In all fairness, I don't think you can be sent on active duty until eighteen though.

Well why don't they use wristbands like they do in bars and clubs. You walk in they check your ID before you put one coin or bill in a machine and the waitress sees the different color band compared to the 21 year old wristbandband and wont serve alcohol to that person
