Why not own the console you WANT!

TOTAL EDIT, READ THIS SHIT: Even though my OP was highly detailed, too many people jumped to price and didn't let the actual purpose of the thread soak in. :p

Allow me to elaborate.

If you own a PS3, and there are several 360 exclusive games that are coming out that you, the consumer, want, why spend time bitching and moaning?

Sorry if my first OP confused you, I didn't mean "GO BUY ALL THIS SHIT NOW!" because that would be stupid. However, I feel it is childish and stupid to complain, boycott and petition games that are exclusive to a console you do not own.

A game where I live costs $65, if I can stop myself from buying 3-4 games, BAM, I've bought a console.

My whole point is people who complain about console exclusives, yet seem to have the money to go buy 4 games a month. It's a bit of a mind f*ck, all those games that you were only mindly interested in could have paid for your new console.

Because the Wii was not generated for anyone but casual gamers >> It's a waste of the money you put in it, my sister has one. Why waste money on systems you'll hardly touch?

It's a classic argument of having well-rounded-ness over specialty.
If I were to buy each console, then I'd have to fork over more and more money because now I have three sets of exclusive titles I'd be wanting rather than just one.

I waste enough time on my PC. Adding three additional sources of distraction would prevent me from getting anything done.

Although I have considered a Wii, just for drunken multiplayer hijinks on back-catalogue games and Mario Kart, the most skill-free game in existence.

Because usually gamers don't have that much money to basically throw away. Almost all good games come out on PC anyway, so just get a PC and there you go.
Excactly, all your problems solved. Plus if you feel console home sick, just grab a PC ported version of the controller and grab yourself a good emulator.

Friends lists will get complicated if you have all consoles, you can't just jump about to another game with them if you bought it for the wrong platform.

Plus I'm happy with my PC and don't want a console.

OK given your numbers that's still $945 with one game each console, now I'm sure your going to want more then one game per console, not to mention more controllers, headsets, xbox live, not everybody has over $1000 just lying around to splurge on video game consoles, then spend hundreds more on games and accessories. not to mention you've completely excluded the PC, and that's another grand on the top if you want them all, so you have something to play anything that comes out as an exclusive on. (or something like tf2, where you miss out on a lot if you Microsoft as an evil overlord, so you have to go play it on PC if you want to get the full features)

Let me just quote you on a few things.

Ever seen any people complain about games not being released on their gaming platform of choice? Of course you have.

The way to end the console war is simple, buy ALL consoles.

Now, a lot of you will probably quit reading there, quote me and says "But teh money!"

Ah yes, the money involved in owning all three consoles (and a decent gaming computer). It seems like a lot doesn't it? Well actually, not anymore.

You see, the great thing about the consoles being out for a few years means that they are CHEAP (for their modern hardware). I bought a second Wii for $150!
This partly proves my next statement. Most of us don't have the money to own all three, nor would most of us WANT to own all three. Yes, Halo is as fun as a bag of monkeys on a hot summer's day, but so is Grand Theft Auto, or Super Smash Brawl.
I can live without having all three, and I wouldn't want the XBox crowding my PS3 or Wii.

Let's get down to the nitty gritty, the cost of owning all 3 consoles. Chances are, you already own at least one console (unless you're a computer gamer).
If you own a PS3 (about $200-300 depending on how new and where you buy), then you'll be spending anywhere from $350-500 on the Wii and 360 (if you get the 360elite, you'll be spending $300).

Who says you have to buy a console new anyways?! I bought my Wii used with a couple of games, for only $150 as mentioned earlier.
For the most part, the reason many of us buy new consoles is because, and I have friends that do this, people trade in their broken consoles to get store credit, and most gamestore employees are to lazy to check if they work.

Now, let's think about how much you spend on games. If you're a person who likes to dabble in games and will just buy a game or two with each paycheck, then owning alll consoles is a real possibility for you.

A new game usually runs at about $65.
Three new games will cost you $195, which is close to the price of a new console.
Between gaming droughts in which nothing good is coming out, it would be pretty easy for you to save the money to buy a new console.
Gaming droughts? If you honestly need to buy a new game each month (or every few months for that matter), then I suggest picking up a hobby. You'll spend around the same money.

The problem for me with owning all three, I once did but then sold my Wii, is that usually there is at least one console that gathers dust. The Wii only had a couple of games I wanted to play at the time, then there was nothing.

Also, it may be true you can save up to buy a particular system, but then you have to add the cost of all the new exclusives you'll now have access to. At least if you don't have the console, it can't tempt you that much. But once you have the new console, you're going to have to agonize over which exclusive to buy this month.

I do think if you have the money, you might as well own all three. I think most people would if they had the money.

Oh, to live where you live. Try $110. All three consoles just seems excessive to me, especially considering that developers should just release universally anyway.
Between the three (or four including the PC) you can limit it down considerably.

If you want old school gaming, might as well go with the Xbox and Xbox Live. You have the Xbox arcade and a lot of smaller games that won't cost you as much.

The PS3, unfortunately, doesn't seem as powerful in the games department as the PS2. With the PS2 you had a focus on the RPGs as well as quite a variety of games to choose from even closer to the start. With the PS3, although it has God of War 3 and Valkyria Chronicles, it just doesn't seem as if the lineup is up to speed.

With the Wii, you have Mario and more of the casual crowd. This is by far you largest demographic. Also, this is where you're going to get a lot more varied games.

PC has Steam. Steam is great with the deals. Until EA and Ubisoft get their act together and stop trying to screw over their PC market, Steam will still be number one.

What? I challenge you to a duel for Mario Kart's honour!

Oh, you meant the wii version? Fair enough then.

The problem is, the PS3 only has a handful of exclusives I want to play (the same is true of the xbox, but at the time they had exclusives I preferred), and the wii only has 2 or 3 games I want to play at all...

So essentially, on either system, I'm paying between £200 and £500 for about 4 games. Yes, it's 4 games plus a games system, but multi-platform releases mean the only games I'd be playing on the new system that I couldn't play otherwise will be exclusive titles.

Also, I'm a student, and don't have 'teh money'

I do! It took me a long long time to get them but I do have them now :) We don't use the Wii much at all but haven't traded it in because we are keeping it for the baby (who is now 1) for when he is older, since there are more child friendly games on Wii (and we have lots of Gamecube games that he will be able to play too)

Multiple consoles are clutter. I have one gaming machine and it runs photoshop. Well two, but I run CS on my netbook as well.

Because I prefer my 360. I use my PC for gaming rarely [especially since it died recently], but when I did it would be to download older PC games I never got around to trying [I don't play newer games on it because it wasn't that powerful, and I'm not admitting to illegally downloading games, honest >_>]

I wouldn't want a PS3 as there aren't any exclusives that interest me, and the only thing I'd liek to play on Wii are the Resident Evil Chronicle games. And my parents own a Wii. Thats right, my parents. My dad is a gamer, he has his own 360, but only gets a few hours in a week. But it was my mothers idea to get the Wii [for Wii-fit ofc] but considering she was always fairly anti-gaming, it goes to show how much the Wii appeals to non-gamers.

It's often times a matter of the people potentially buying the console not having the need or desire to play the few, (in the PS3-Xbox case), exclusives to warrant the purchase of another console. They feel that the exclusives + multi-platform games are enough, and any more than that would be overkill.

Because there hasn't been a gaming drought to save up that kinda cash in a long time.

2010 is the best gaming year ever at this point.

When I get my PS3, it will collect more dust than the average Wii, though. Why? Because I only really want Ratchet & Clank. I'd play the 2 full games, the downloadable one, and be done. My Wii get used a bit more than the average one, though. Thanks, Gamecube games!

I have all consoles - and not just talking about the main three at the moment, but every UK released console since the NES.

Variety is the spice of life.

Gotta say though, most gather dust in favour of playing games on the PC - love my RTS which you just can't do well with a joypad.
