The reason is that its an "easy to learn, hard to master" type of game that appears to involve a great deal of variety while still maintaining the same dynamics in each game. Its got aspects of nostalgia for older players going back to Red and Blue editions, while still gaining new audience in younger viewers which later becomes nostalgic for them. Its continually adding new features to the game encouraging people to go get the newer editions. The thing is, Pokemon has a pick-up-and-play element that you can work with for either small half-hour segments or gigantic 10-hour play sessions. Why its addictive? Its simple and colorful and you get to see some funny little anime monsters shooting beams at each other. Mostly though, you could ask the same about why any game where grind is necessary is addictive: Its because people want to get the best Pokemon at the highest level.A Pokemon MMORPG would do disturbingly well.
You hid the most important part of that.

If you've ever collected anything, and I mean anything, then you understand the appeal of Pokemon. It's the same appeal as trying to get all the stars in a Mario game or trying to kill all the pigeons in GTA IV.

Admittedly it's not for everyone, but clearly it's appealing to a sufficient number of people for Nintendo to keep making them.
Both of these summaries describe it best. Pokemon is not for everyone. Just because you hate it doesn't mean everyone else has to. I still play the Red version I got on my eighth birthday. That was eleven years ago. Why do I still play it? Nostalgia and fun.

Hey, Why dont you ever take a shower with a pokemon? They might PIKACHU! ;D
LOL!

Pokemon is totally about reliving childhood for me. I still play Red, Yellow, and Silver once in a while, even just for 10 mins.

Well for the first few games (bar pearl) it was purely getting them all. But on pearl I dsicovered; EVs/IVs/Egg moves etc. Spent ages just making uber squads. My glorious level 100 Breloom for one (spore, focus punch, substitute, leach seed with toxic orb and the ability toxic heal see and that's just one out of 400 odd)

Red/Blue/Yellow were fun as hell.
Gold/Silver/Crystal were also fun.

I found every Pokemon game made after this to be just redundant and stretching the franchise to thin that it would tear at the slightest cough.

Speaking of addiction, has anyone else noticed that you can still hear the music of the above mentioned title long after you've shut off your Game Boy? I can't count how many times I've had to double and triple check it to make sure it was really off.

I agree completely.

Because it's fun. It's shiny. It's colourful. There's character and flair to it.

And to some who like a good game once in a while it's fun you beat your brothers party with yours because you know how types work against each other. ^^

because getting something that's weak and a low level, then making it into something strong is great fun. when you have 6 things to make strong, maybe more, it's even better.

Mixture of several things. Nostalgia is huge, but it is also a fun little RPG to play with a lot of variation to how you play it.

I play Pokémon because I still find it fun the first time around a new game. I always love the bigger games (Yellow/Crystal/Emerald/Platinum) because it packs in even more for you to do, or extra little additions. (Pikachu in Yellow, encounter animations in Crystal, etc.) If they make any more (How are they going to top Arceus, the "god of Pokémon," though?), I'll still be willing to buy them.

'cause you gotta catch'em all. PLus I always found it yo be very fun to way over-level your pokemon and just wreck the gym leaders or go to an area where the pokemon are around level 2 ad use hyper beam from a level 100 pokemon.

They removed the "GOTTA CATCH THEM ALL" when they've realized there were already 350 of them.

Besides, nostalgia. I love Pokemon Silver, but I don't fancy the new ones, because I don't have any memories with them.

Sir, I don't know what you're talking about.
This is clearly an avatar of a distinguished English Gentleman and not a "mudkip".

Stop your accusations at once.
