Here's a cheap idea:
Play Pokémon Yellow.

Congratulations, you've played all the Pokémon games to date, and at a great price too.

The games are all the same, minus some cosmetics and some functionality.

Every game, they find more monsters to cram into the game, it gets boring and tiresome.

I only play Diamond to break the game with the glitches.

I think that's a pretty good summary.

Pokemon the game is addicting because:

It has the elements of an RPG.
There are 151 playable characters to customize your team of 6 with.
8 bosses, and for people who love to grind, there's always some new monster around the corner.

Pokemon is one of the few RPG series I have not played, though I did get a copy of Platinum I have yet to even start it. :)

Truthfully I imagine the appeal is similar to the collection and fusion in the Shin Megami Tensei games which has been called "Pokemon for adults". :)

One of these days I'll probably give Pokemon a shot though just to say I did it. Who knows at 34 I might become addicted, then again probably not as it's a bit too cutesy (and the wrong kind of cute) for my tastes. Besides for obvious reasons I have nobody to play with so that limits your options substantially as like 99% of the game seems to be about interaction as I understand things.

I spent much of the last year playing it between lessons and during my free periods, it was something to do and I could laugh at the weird looks I got. This may explain why very little of my homework got done.

There's defiantly the competition with my friends with who has got the higher level Pokemon.

The reason is that its an "easy to learn, hard to master" type of game that appears to involve a great deal of variety while still maintaining the same dynamics in each game. Its got aspects of nostalgia for older players going back to Red and Blue editions, while still gaining new audience in younger viewers which later becomes nostalgic for them. Its continually adding new features to the game encouraging people to go get the newer editions. The thing is, Pokemon has a pick-up-and-play element that you can work with for either small half-hour segments or gigantic 10-hour play sessions. Why its addictive? Its simple and colorful and you get to see some funny little anime monsters shooting beams at each other. Mostly though, you could ask the same about why any game where grind is necessary is addictive: Its because people want to get the best Pokemon at the highest level.
This. Pick-up-and-play being the biggest.
When I bought my DS, I figured Pokemon would be the best game to ease into, due to that nature. It's very easy to just start playing whenever.

Simply put, it's addictive. There's something about turn-based combat that just sort of zones me out from reality. It's why I like Golden Sun and Dragon Quest VIII.
It's weird: I know how I should be playing Pokemon (6 members of a team, wide range of attacks, level up evenly) but by the second gym I'm transformed into my 7-year-old self, just levelling up the starter and giving them a very narrow range of attacks.
Nostalgia is your friend.

I suggest true fans looking for a new challenge look up competitive Pokemon. It's geeky but incredibly satisfying if you get into it.

Sir, I don't know what you're talking about.
This is clearly an avatar of a distinguished English Gentleman and not a "mudkip".

Stop your accusations at once.

A Pokemon MMORPG would do disturbingly well.
^This

My brother around ruby/saph found Netbattle, which is an emulation in which you create your own pokemon teams and battle against other people. I quickly found out that there was more to it than Grass beats water. Some battles are easy while others take a while to figure out your next move against your opponent, just like a strategy game. The whole system is well done. If a pokemon MMORPG came out from nintendo....... I just hope they don't.

If you have ever tried to collect anything then you know the appeal of Pokemon. But you can also use Pokemon to "fight" other people which adds a new layer to the collecting.

Its fun, a bit MMO-ish in nature but fun all the same.

Pokemon seems to come and go in phases for me. I will easily put 100 hours into it then just stop playing out of the blue. Then a few years later I will dump another 100 hours into it.

Well in order to answer this you have to ask why any other game is addicting. Just because... METAL UP YOUR ASS!
