Two of those games are CoD games - they don't deserve to have credited writers. Neither do most games for that matter, but still.

And it's because a lot of people still see things as Russia = Communist = Evil.
By 'people', you mean 'Americans', right? Go on, admit it. No-one minds.

I mean, what have we had since the Cold War? A bunch of terrorists, in ass backward countries using 60 year old weapons, and home made explosives. Sure, they can kill people, but there is not threat of them ever being a serious threat to the American government.
You make a good point, but what I mean is that there's no variety in antagonist countries lately. I'd like to see someone like, North Korea fight the U.S.(Not the Korean War) Even though the tension at the DMZ hasn't been too exciting, I'd still like to play that game, if it ever gets made.

Here's an idea when otehr countries start making games they can have whoever they want be the villains

In the mean time the people whoa actually make games are busy basing htem off people we tussled with or trying to make people forget who they sided with (you know who you are)

Because the only other option for the lazy Western writers is to make another billion games with the Nazis or the Japanese as enemies.

Honestly though, I would have vouched for Russia during the cold war, so...

Well Black Ops was about the cold war... and the Russians were kind of a big part of that. But also, Russia is awesome, and could actually pose a decent challenge if it came to full scale war.

Hence Homefront's release in March. NK invades the US.

I think its because the Russians kicked Nazi Germany's ass and were known for their brutality. That combined with the whole cold war espionage thing, the build up of nukes and the distribution of weapons to nations unfriendly to the Americans makes them evil. Even after that stuff has ended, this stigma remains.

I wonder how long this will last?

In the spirit of all of this Cold War talk, I first thought, and tried to decipher your post, as it looked like it was harboring some sort of code.

I see I was wrong. :(

@OP: I think a developer should make an FPS where your side is the one without the shiny toys, etc, or at least, the less technologically advanced of the two. And I don't mean Halo/Half-life, etc. I want a realistic setting, something that's happening right now.

If it was tragic enough, I doubt that playing as a different culture of ethnicity would even upset the media, as the game would probably be seen as shedding light on a conflict many bleeding hearts that run the US media would see as revolutionary. :D

Sadly, the best you will get is people either:

A: shooting american soldiers
or B: genociding other ethnicities

Both options will create so much controversy that no serious developer will touch the game concept with a pole of any length.

Can I just point out that all this talk about Russia being the only one possible to put up such a fight with America or whatever is technically wrong, as Russia is too underpopulated (And, as far as I know, very deep in financial problems.) to be able to invade America/Defend itself from a large invasion.

Unless it fired nukes, which is suicidal.

Well, you see what happened when they tried to go Taliban in MoH, let alone Six Days in Fallujah. Everybody is accustomed to the russians, nazis, etc. (and of late, PMCs) are where the enemy hides, anything more topical than 40 years ago is taboo.

And thiosk: That typing is making me all dizzy, I'm all up on medication and random letters seemingly jumping at me (and I don't even wear my 3D glasses) are really not nice... well, a bit, but mostly not.

Common antagonists in American games:
NotIraqistan is an 'unfair' opponent.
I.e. It would be 'unrealistic' to give them a modern armed forces on a par with the US.
North Korea is also comes under that.

Europe has history so beating on Nazis is fine but modern Europe is their bi**h ally.
They also have a significantly large games market and Americans don't like killing Americans/Europeans either (unless they are Private Military Contractors, then it's ok).

So, it would be a 'fair' enemy, it isn't a Market that could kick up enough of a fuss to effect their place in games and you can totally see:
"Russian mutant radioactive zombie soldier program"
Compared to:
"Non-descript Middle Eastern County mutant radioactive zombie soldier program"

Because in Soviet Russia....no, I won't do it. It's just because they are easy to make them look like bad guys to the American, or as I like to call him, 'Joe Dumb-face'.

Yeah, why not have North Korea or something like that as an antagonist? Why Russia?
I have no idea, it would make so much more sense to use Korea. Seriously. The cold war is over.
