Why should I pick a side?

After seeing this week's The Big Picture, I thought of something that relates to the topic of Fair Game. Triple A games vs. Indie games. Why is it that you have to be a fan of one but not the other? If you say your a fan of Minecraft or Amnesia people assume your a smart indie gamer and loves to compare them to triple A games and bashing them in as a whole. Whenever anyone is a big Halo or CoD fan, everyone assumes that they're big money spending retards who have no taste in games at all. Ben Yahtzee continuously claims that all triple A games are piles of moneymaking shit that provide no value or entertainment, and I very much disagree on this. There are good and bad triple A games, just like how there are good and bad indie games.

EDIT: Okay you got me. YES, I'm aware that some of Yatzee's favorite titles are triple A games. I was wrong about what I said before, hooray. Most of the argument was meant in favor with this weeks episode of "The Big Picture" and how you can't like one thing without hating the rest. I'm glad you all love ZP as much as me, but can we stay on topic here?

You shouldnt. Theres no reason to buy into another inflated gaming related war. Theres plenty enough to go around, Piracy, PC v Consoles, JRPG v WRPGS etc. I think asking someone to pick a side is just more pointless rabble rousing.

I... had a dream... when a video game... was judged not for the colors in its box art.. but for the content and character development~!

Yahtzee, also said on his Gears of War 2 review, 'that things are popular for a reason'.

Id be careful man, the last guy who said things along those longs got shot, although he did inspire change and acceptance....

You knwo what, keep going :p

I think its just stupid to have to choose a side, especially "hardcore" gamers vs. "casual" gamers, its almost as bad as Metalheads vs Bieber fans, the only reason its not is because Casual gamers actually dont fight back, id go as far to say that they dont even know or care about "hardcore" gamers. Just do what you want, play what you want, dont let dickbags judge you

Wars about games usually make no sense to me. Video game wars should only be INSIDE the games themselves.

Yes, he totally claims this and supports it whole-heartedly. That's why his three top games of the year were all triple-A titles.

90% of indie games are shallow trash, too. They just have the advantage of being swept under the rug if they got out from it at all. A luxury that major studios don't have.

He has also stated that there are some AAA games he wants to play again. But he is also largely right that most of the them are fairly shit. Like Call of Duty.

I play everything. CoD to Halo, Persona 4 to Oblivion, Pokemon to the Sims. You name it, I play it. I think the indie game world is growing, which is good. Small companies can make more interesting games, while big companies can make better more complete games (for the most part). I think this year will be a good year for games, unlike 2010. Not to say NO good games came out, just not as many niche or interesting ones...

Not to be rude, but I always get the impression that Yahtzee haters are idiots who don't pay attention enough to realize that he actually has nice things to say. Sometimes, not so much here, it is blatantly obvious that the idiot in question hadn't even watched/read certain Zero/Extra Punctuation.
Aha! Because I said I disagreed about something Yahtzee said, you claimed me to be a Yahtzee hater. I watch every Zero Punctuation and very much enjoy it. And yes, I'm well aware some of his favorite games are triple A titles, I just didn't want to be Mr. Obvious and point it out. It's the times when he or anyone else criticizes the triple A game industry as a whole is where I disagree. Now go find another Zero Punctuation quote to prove that I'm wrong, call me a retard, and feel better about yourself for doing so.

Yes, I know ZP likes a few Triple A titles, it just seems like he's been ranting on about it more than usual. Thank you for pointing it out and not being a dick about it like Horny Ico did.

Yup, and sometimes those reasons are even good. Usually, however, they're not.

Yes, it is possible to like indie games without hating triple A titles, and vice versa... or even more shockingly, it is indeed possible to like both!

You've blown my mind.

Woah.

But seriously, people like binary choices. Coke or Pepsi. McDonalds or Burger King. Vintage or State of the Art. Indie or major. Mainstream or underground.

Naturally, people tend to frame these things as an "a or b" choice. Which is unfortunate, because they naturally miss out.

Did you miss the part where I specified that you're obviously not the worst example? That was my lame attempt to tone back the asshole-nature of my post.

But why shouldn't he nag "the AAA industry as a whole"? Those are always over-saturated with creativeless bore-fests that only care about copying the big thing at the time, games are no exception. Music had everyone from the Backstreet Boys to Britney Spears emulating Michael Jackson's syncing dance moves despite lacking his vocal talent. And now we have 100 cheesy pieces-of-crap franchises emulating Halo in the same way. They'll have the protagonist speak where Master Chief was wise enough to know his limits and only speak in short, simple one-liners. To ignore the copy-cat nature of all mainstream is to let crap get away with being crap.
I'm sorry about before, I guess I was just angry. I agree with all these things about the AAA industry, I'm just getting tired of hearing it. I obviously don't know nearly as much about the subject matter as you do, but when someone says they hate a AAA game without any other reason other than that its a AAA game, that kinda boils my bananas.
I definitely didn't word this forum topic right.
