For folks who are dying to gain ~15 pounds, world of warcraft is a FANTASTIC option!

Nothing will help those unemployment blues and job search drawls like a good dose of extra bodyfat.

i cannot decide if i want to re-subscribe when cataclysm hits just to see the changes. seems kind of a waste to purchase the expansion for $40 - $50 (i'm guessing) just to see how the world changed though. which means i would probably stick around to hit level 90 - which i could drag out for quite some time.

meh, i dunno. i will probably wait till i hear and read a few reviews before deciding.
Actually the changes to the world, and the new starting zones and quests for existing races will be introduced in a patch. All of the world changes to pre-existing areas will happen regardless of you buying the expansion. The expansion simply gives access to Worgens, Goblins, level 80-85 content, and the entirely new zones. You'll be able to do all the new starter quests, and new quest lines that are introduced without purchasing the expansion.

Good reason not to play: You just lost your job, you can't afford to waste $15/month on it. Do a free to play MMORPG instead. Get into Guild Wars or something and get hyped up for Guild Wars 2.
Pretty much this. As someone whose played since TBC, raided casually, and even got the Lich King Collectors edition, I'm sick of WoW. A friend of mine whose been playing since Vanilla and did some raiding of his own, is in agreement.
After that much time....are you surprised?

I used to play WoW, but grew tired of it. One of the major issues I found with the game was the subscription since I played the game very casually. I felt almost obliged to play since I was paying for it even though the $15 a month wasn't an issue. I've had just as much fun if not more playing some of the F2P MMO's out there. I love F2P MMO's because as soon as you get tired of one move onto the next, it's all about haven' fun and you don't feel obligated to stick with it since there is no incentive. I'd rather play a game for the sake of having fun than because I've invested time into it or have payed for X amount of playtime. I haven't really done much gaming in the MMO world for some due to me now using a Mac due to the need of certain OS specific programs.

I just suggest doing whatever is most fun and enjoyable for you, if you aren't having fun then move onto something else.

I suggest you watch some of the new quests and the new starting zones on youtube and decide for yourself.

And to those who said WoW got boring once you got ICC 25 gear:
If your aim was only to get gear no wonder you got bored, gear is fun but the real reason it exists is to help you beat the game. Try getting in a good guild and attempting some hard modes. It is very difficult to stay motivated if you raid with people you don't care about.
Alternatively you can have fun in PvP if you're in a good server, PvP in cataclysm looks like its going to be loads of fun

Don't. Ever.

You'll end up just playing it for shits and giggles, saying to yourself "I can handle this!" But before you know it, your month is up, and you are trying to find any source of income so that damn OrczBballin doesn't get a monopoly on the whole damn copper ore market.

World of Warcraft is made to be a circular style of game. You grind and raid to get gear that makes you more proficient at grinding to raid to get gear. Other than that, you get a heavily censored chatroom for just 15 dollars a month. You have to choose for yourself obviously, but I am going to say don't get into it. Use the fifteen a month to get gamefly, or use it on one of steam's sales if you are more into PC gaming.

I played World of Warcraft for about 2 years, right after it came out, and then for another year sometime after I stopped the first time. I kept stopping because I couldn't commit the time to it I should have, the players were being twats, and it just got kind of boring.

Now I just lost my job last Wednesday. I find myself being bored and unproductive, and it occured to me that I should start playing WoW again. But while I can't think of a good reason not to play, I also can't think of a good reason to get involved again. Does anyone have a deal maker in either direction, or an alternative suggestion?

Migo is right here, get GW1, and then get hyped for GW2.

If you hadn't lost your job, I'd say yes but wait for Cataclysm. If you like MMO's tho, try DDO or LOTRO, no cost and they're not bad.

There are far better ways to kill time; I'm back in school thanks to my wonderful local unemployment rate jumping at twice the national average (support staff are the first to be cut, as I found out).

Read a series of books; start running; fuck, join a local ping-pong league if you can.
Anything is better than fucking WoW.
