But if the Xbox is a native 720p platform wouldn't any games made in 1080 be re-sized for 720 and then re-upscaled?
Actually, the 360 isn't really "native" to anything, it is just typical that the games are in 720p and devs just have it upscale it itself. :/

I can't help but find it funny when people go "Graphics don't matter! A game can have the shittiest graphics in the world and I'd still play it 'cause the game is fun!" and then whenever a topic on PCs come along, it's always "Yeah, the PC is so far ahead with their technology, with consoles games giving piss porr anti-aliasing, lighting, texture mapping, and frame-rate aspects!"

I guess many console games don't go for 1080p because they don't have the resources, though I wouldn't know it. Uncharted on my friend's 40-inch TV still looks gorgeous, whether it's upscaled to 1080p or whatever the excuse is, and my own TV is a crappy 27-inch LCD somethingorother and I've gone by with. Would I like a better TV? Of course (and hopefully I'll be able to snag one from my friend), but I don't mind that my games are playing at 1080i or whatever the TV says it's playing at, or that some games may not be using the fullest extent of their anti-aliasing capabilities.

I think what appeals to console gaming to developers right now is their focused nature. You've got a billion and one different options for the PC, and since most PCs are generally used for business rather than games, people don't want to deal with assembling their own PC from scratch with a dozen and one parts that may or may-not be compatible with other parts, which may or may-not be the best deal you can get, which may or may-not be the best GPU or CPU or whatever that you can get at the price you're paying. It's all complicated, and the simplistic nature of the console, for both developers and consumers, makes it easier to optimize what you've got.

After all, it's not the size of your GPU, but how you use it ;P

I think this thread got off the path of "Why so few games in 1080p?" and went down the road of "What is better PC or Consoles?"

On that topic: I got console and PC. I got my PC for school, socializing, and PC exclusive games. My console is for games in general and console awesome exclusive games (like Gears 2). My console is only good for games and so why the fuck wouldn't I use it for that? I'll use up all the storage space on my 360 for games and save some space on my PC.

I see many people spreading PC elitism in regards to the OP's post for having a console, some prefer consoles because they are simple to use or because some people are computer illiterate.

Graphics don't concern me, take DA:O for example: Shit graphics on PC as well, but I love it. A game could have the best graphics imaginable and I won't play it if it blows.

PC will always be better because of it's variety of uses in the real world and so are constantly being improved, console are good only for games and were only designed for such and so they will only be improved once a major breakthrough happens in it's areas.

As for the OP's thread:
Money, they don't give a shit about resolution. They only care if you buy it at lowest cost to them. Anyone who disagrees is naive, it's always about money.

So choices have to be made, do you want a game with great graphics in full HD? Possible.. sacrifice something else. Do you have a game that has great action scenes, beautiful areas that you fully can explore? You are going for 720p!

That pretty much is the story. FF XIII for instance beautiful, but you can't go anywhere!
Tiny flaw with that... Final Fantasy XIII is in 720p. Technically.

On the PS3, the gameplay is 720p upscaled to 1080p, with cutscenes being native 1080p.

On the 360 however, the gameplay is in something like 576p or something similar, upscaled to 720p, which, if outputting in 1080p, is upscaled even further to 1080p, with the 360's built in ability, costing zero resources. Not sure about the cutscenes though. :/ I assume they are in 720p.

So, you can actually blame FF XIII being linear on Sqeenix just making it that way. :p
I see mmm I guess my information was a bit out dated them. Or simple shifted it happens.

But yes many games are under 720p and upscaled. In a way I am happy that on the PS3 you don't "Free upscaling" by some frame buffer hack. Because that is it!

What matters to me really is that games remember what makes them good. We like how we can play them, their stories, characters, humour, their smooth gameplay. Graphics should NEVER be a reason to walk away from those basic truths.

@Light

Ah DA:O, yup just look at the textures... but no don't! You are there to play a good game and enjoy a good game. Not to stare at pixels ;)

160 x 144.

This, we can agree on. :p

Also, the bestselling game on the Game Boy Color. :p

Any word on if Portal 2 will be 1080p? Obviously it will be supported, but all Valve games have been naturally 720p. The reason I wonder is because all of the screenshots they have released have been in 1080p, and they've upgraded the Source engine to include much higher-resolution textures.
