Anonymity combined with sore losing. If the messages continue file a complaint to XBL and also write down the threatening messages and send them to the local authorities. Someone in england got arrested for "cyber-bullying" and was sent to jail so you have a legal precedent to go back on.

Americans seem to target my friend and I because we have the clan tag "UK" on COD 5. We always manage to flip it though, which is always quite funny.

Randomer "Hah, these Brits think they're good at COD 5. Awww."

Myself. "I'm sorry, what did you say just say... IN ENGLISH?"

My friend "I'm sorry, I don't understand. Did you just say you live... IN AMERICA?"

Yeah, honestly. It think it's more hilarious than offensive. Seems to be alot of English and American hate on both sides though. Not sure why that is.

Through the gift of anonymity...

Let's face it, I would kick your ass if you said that to me in real life.

EDIT: To participate more, I was once assaulted on Gears of War 2 online. Some punk from Yankland, after talking about his plans to go and have a McDonalds, in painful detail, I was abused for having used my chainsaw once. Unfortunately, according to his wacky teenage logic, that's all I'd been doing. He messaged me:

"Yo dude, you're so bad all you can do is chainsaw..."

I replied thanking him for delaying his trip to McDonalds in order to insult me, then informed him that his argument was flawed.

"Wow ur gay" Was what I got in return.

"Scathing in it's elegant simplicity, 'ur gay'", said I, in return to the wondefully crafted witticism. I recieved no further communication from him, so I assumed I had won that battle of wits.

EDIT 2: Just try and act as civilised as possible and use logic, that defeats the troll.

On CoD4 once I was playing a game on Showdown, doing pretty well with my MP44 (I was close to prestiging for the 8th time) At the end of the game someone voice messaged me accusing me of having a modded controller. "Hey, you... Modded controller, dickhead." was his exact wording, I just laughed and ignored it because either he got the wrong person or was too stupid to realise modded controllers don't work on automatic weapons in the first place. (I'd just like to point out also that I'm against modded controllers as well)

To combat the problem of idiots like the one you encountered, I simply don't plug my mic in, or stay within a party chat with my friends. I can barely hear the game chat through my speakers, so I don't get into any arguments really.

You don't spend much time on the internet, do you? You see, anonymity changes the mind of people. They have little or no consequences for their actions. A great deal of these online idiots wouldn't even think of doing these things outside the internet.

The worst I've had was people accusing me of hacking on Halo 1, back when I was actually good; the only weapons I ever used were the pistol and sniper rifle.
One cannot "mute" text, so I just induce text-lag by alt+tabbing for a few seconds. No more text, no more mindless abuse.

People do this because they need an excuse to love because it is way to hard for them to interpret that the victor had more skills.

Happens all the time just mute, ignore, talk in parties.

When people think there won't be consequences they show their true colours. Because they don't fear punishment they feel invincible, and they descend further and further into anarchy and anti social behaviour, become self loathing and eventually cause the downfall of society itself.

Or is that just me?

Also, don't get me started on British vs Americans.

Come on, really? Why do people scream and yell at people over LIVE? Because they sit and play the same game over and over again filling themselves with junk food and have no physical outlet other than the movement of their mouths.

You would be upset with the world too if nobody praised you for growing into your sofa.

Just remember, that in most cases, they are yelling at you because they just died. Sadly, these games may be the highlights of these peoples lives. With each head shot you are telling them that they are failing at THIS moment in life as well.

Honestly the one time I really spent any time on Live, was with Shadowrun, and I had a blast. There were a couple of annoying screechers, but nothing unmanageable.

Though, on the larger topic of asshats on the internet, there was a hilarious youtube comment my GF stumbled across a couple months ago.

It ended something along the lines of "...don't you even fucking think about replying to this, I will track you down and kill you. I've been to jail before and I'm not afraid to go back."

I dare you to TRY to take that seriously. :p

If a guy explodes at me it just means that he's annoyed that i'm better than him. A while ago i was playing CoD 4 online, can't remember the name of the map though, and i managed to make it from one end of the to the other, sneak up behind a sniper who was camping there the whole time, and get him with a knife.

He FREAKED.

Started calling me things like "Paddy Fucker", "Cheating fag" and the like. Needless to say my ego was soaring by this point so while he was ranting at me....i snuck up behind him and done it again.

That was a damn good day

Once in a Halo 3 matchmaking. He got pissed because of my user name and the fact that he kept getting killed by my guest. He kept calling us 'fags' and 'moutherf****rs' then everytime he killed one of us, screamed down the headset in a incoherent manner.
Naturally, being quite hot-headed, me and my mate started taunting him down the headset, calling him a n00b for his guest being better then him and how he must be inbred. It continued in this manner for the entire match.

In the aftermath, I left the lobby and just gave him a bad rep report and left it at that and he gave me one as well, I assuming.

This is when I learned that the 'Mute' button really is your best friend.

And don't rise the pillocks who are on XBL.

Do you know what's fun? What's really, really fun?

If you get an incoherent, hate filled email, just reply with this. No matter what he replies with, just keep replying with this.

'U mad?'

1) Yes
2) Hit the Mute button
3) Learn to hit the Mute button faster, or better yet, start a party and/or mute everyone.

Gears Of War 1 was great for dealing with this find of problem. In the year or so of me playing this (And Oblivion), I'd always come home from school(Age was 15 through to 16 of my party), turn on Xbox & get a match started on Gears, invite a few friends and we'd let pretty much anyone join(No matter skill or age). We'd balence the teams out as best we could, play for a few hours and have a laugh while doing so.
Occassionally a dick would end up in the match, I'd give them a warning, telling them to stop being such a thoughtless prick. If it carried on,they were kicked.

It was a better set up with hosting your own match (Providing you're not on AOL), I ended up getting half my friends list off Gears because we always had decent games going on, had a laugh and played again the next day. It ended up giving you decent policing rights as well. The server can't decide when a player is being a dick in the same way as a live player, why remove their right to kick those who turn the fun times to shit?

Anyway to ask some questions

1) Have you ever encountered someone like this on XBL?

2) What happened and what did you do?

3) Oh and some general tips to help dealing with these situations.
1) Oh yea
2) Playing Grif Ball, like you I pwned too hard and they got mad
3) Turned the volume down on my head set and laughed at them the rest of the game.

It happens all the time on Gears of War. I remember the days of Gears 1, when there was kind of an unspoken code of honor. Active-downers were generally looked down upon, two-piecing was widely considered cheap, glitchers were almost always hated. But Gears of War 2, though it is a much better game, has a much worse community. Calling someone out for being cheap is just asking for them to go off on you. There's just no respect in combat anymore...

I blame video games!
It is them there violent games that are the problem. Or it could be the blatant stupidity on both behalfs that is truly the root. Gee some guy is calling me a cheater. I know I will retaliate instead of taking the high road and using the magical but elusive mute function. Why bother trying to curb the problem when I can perpetuate it then make a thread about why such hostility exists on XBL. Why I think I deserve 2 cookies.

The scum of the world resides o nthe interwebz, and Xbox Live counts as the interwebz so it gets its healthy share of scum, question answered.

Because the Xbox is mainly owned by people around... 10-18. All those raging hormones in the same place, what do you expect? (I am kind of agist. Since I don't like most children or teenagers.) Most online shooters are like this though, can't really avoid it if you're playing multiplayer.
