I like anime about as well as I like comic books: not much. This is largely because many of the examples of both I have seen are incredibly stupid, venal, and juvenile. You may as well ask an adult whose used to decent food why they don't like beefaroni.

That being said, I have come across some stellar examples of anime that I enjoyed very much, so I just do what I do with comic books: only read the ones that are recommended to me by someone whose artistic judgment I respect. It weeds out the dreck.

-I have to say the vast majority of the men in anime are voiced by the same guy, because they all sound like a text-to-speech program and have slightly more emotion than one. And girls in anime I'm surprised haven't passed out repeatedly in the recording studio considering how much helium they inhale before each line. (I've NEVER met a Japanese girl who manages to get their voice pitch as high as the average girl in animes are.)
Dubbed or Subbed? most animes don't get turned into english. If they did I'd be able to validly argue that soul eater should be dubbed. Also, on the point of Soul eater, they really have decent voice acting and the guys sound extremely different. If they're the same guy than my whole world is falling apart. However, one of them might have the same voice actor as Naruto. but, that one character (comic relief only) is supposed to be a naruto clone. And they don't sound emotionless.-
-Japanese animes when you get them subbed tend to add a lot of subtle japanese cultural references only someone FROM Japan would actually get, hence why you have to see an explanation on the top of the screen or a little side-note in between the manga panels.
They're not that bad.
-Shota and Lolli are probably illegal in the rest of the world.
Not in America, Bush made that happen briefly in 2003 but it ended 2 years ago
-Considering Japan, the capital of Sexual Deviancy, thinks people being kicked in the balls or watching people with a full bladder is erotic...that stuff would DEFINITELY not fly anywhere else. Heck probalby not even in Europe.
But why would logical people hate it? Not all animes have that? Abeit more do than are comfortable. (curse Atsushi Okubo for adding a cat fan-service character to the Soul Eater manga that the anime adaptation had to keep for very rarely shown but significant plot points)

Jun Fukuyama [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jun_Fukuyama] is awesome.

That is all.

One thing that might be part of it, and it's popped up a couple of times in this thread, is the concept that everything animated, regardless of provenance or target audience, is a "cartoon", and that animation is exclusively for young audiences.

If you've somehow managed to retain that perception even after mainstream adult animation managed to find a foothold in the English speaking world with products like South Park (note: this is not a problem that most of the rest of the world has, much of Europe, especially eastern Europe, uses animation for far wider audiences), you are a fucking retard.

Norio Wakamoto is better. Geass failed to reflect this, and that was the point at which the series fell to bits.

I've got nothing against anime, there are even a few I really like. But the majority of it either bores me or is just plain stupid. Just to give an example of a really popular one I always hated is Inyuasha. I just don't get the appeal.

A few that I love on the other hand are Bleach, Soul Eater, Death Note, Neon Genesis: Evengelion (Best anime ever made in my opinion), Berserk and early Naruto. Also, I can't watch anime with English dubs. The voice acting drives me crazy. Subs only.

I like anime but I'm not groin-grabbingly gonzo over it. Anime is not exempt from Sturgeon's Law.

I lent my sister Evangelion one day and she turned completely otaku. Next thing I know her house is filled with manga I've never heard of and she's got fifty DVD boxed sets of every random piece of crap anime that comes out. I had to say to her, "Just because it's animated and Japanese does not make it good."

I have friends that devour anime like rabid weasels. I asked them to give me something to watch that I'd like and they gave me Simoun. SIMOUN! This is a show about a planet of hot chicks who fly magical fighter craft which are powered by them making out with each other. No, it's not a porno. There must be some kind of subliminal messages in anime that turns off people's genre preferences.

I don't hate anime. In fact, I actually liked it when I was younger. I got turned off some shows, like One piece, that stretched the story way too far. I do watch Code Geass and Ghost in the Shell, though.

To be fair, Simoun does have a really good reputation. (I personally didn't think it hung together very well, and never seemed to decide whether it wanted to focus the story on the war or on Aaeru and Neviril, so just settled for jumbo sized portions of angst.) Still, good for fucking with people's heads. For example, one of these two is actually a man. [http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Uberbucket/vlcsnap-47893.png]

Mneh, what happened to people just not liking something? Nowadays it's all reason this & hate that, you'd think the way some people talk that they were sexually abused by a passing Anime and subsequently scarred for life. Not unlike how many Escapists seem to feel about a certain shall be left nameless MMORPG.

Anyway, as for anime:

Like it's been said, there are -genres-, there is -crap-, there is a -lot- of crap. Name one other form of media where that isn't true! Are all books great? No. Are all films great? No. Are all games great? No. Out of any of those, even those that are actually good, does that mean you are going to like them all? No.

It pays to be choosy, a recommendation from a friend or webmate is a fine thing, but if you haven't done a little research on the title in question on your own, you know, something as simple as looking for a clip or two on Youtube, what the hell do you expect then when you get some dull ecchi crap, or something you can barely understand?

I hate anime because it made me look like a nerd. The other day in Japanese class we were reading a passage and came across the word "pantsu" and the professor asked if anyone knew what it meant. I raised my hand and said "yes, it means panties." The professor responded "that's right, how did you know that?" Then I had to explain that I had learned the word from an anime about a man who falls in love with a robot. Needless to say that was a pretty humbling moment in my life.

No, see it was the second part that made you look like a nerd.

The less nerdy answer is "it's an English word in the first place". (Of course, there is the whole weird American thing where you think pants go on the outside, but that's your own cultural problem.

The characters are over sexualized (even by western standards, which is saying something). The plots are formulaic (even by western standards, which is saying something) and the themes or often sexist(even by... oh never mind).

I hate the subjective motion shots which seems to convey that the animators are too lazy to draw a background rather. There is very often little to no actual animation. It is often so stylized that it makes it hard to follow. (see the section Making Comics)

Yeah, I'm sometimes ashamed to enjoy it because of the weaboos, but some anime definitely should be watched, especially Hayao Miyazaki's work (and Elfen Lied. Because it's fucking Elfen Lied).
Not every anime is DBZ or Naruto; some tell great stories and have great, memorable characters.
Or they're Afro Samurai. With Samuel Motherfuckin' Jackson owning people.

Norio's played a number of parts I love, specifically Mechazawa from Cromartie High School and Vicious from Cowboy Bebop, as well as Charles in Geass, but Fukuyama's acting in xxxHolic and Geass just pushes him over the top for me. I'm sorry, matter of personal taste, but I just prefer him. Agree to disagree?

Watch Hayate no Gotoku, you'll understand (Norio Wakamoto is the narrator, who snarks at the plot and gets backchat from the characters). Also, you have to admit that the "who can chew the most scenery" battles between Charles and Lelouch were the best parts of Geass, and that after his exit in favour of Schneizel the series wasn't quite the same.

I'd guessed Schneizel was going to be the "Final Boss" of Geass once they started playing up the Lelouch-Schneizel sibling rivalry at about episode...9 in R2 with the chess game at the Tian Zi's wedding reception. I didn't really like how abruptly Marianne and Charles were removed from the series though, it felt a little forced and rushed. I did love Lelouch's ploy of trapping both himself and Charles in/on the Sword of Akasha though. Charles' character was always awesome to me because of his love for Social Darwinism.

I'll get Hayate no Gotoku on the DL as soon as I'm home again. Any subbing groups you recommend over others, just in case I have to chose?
