Steam is frustrating in my opinion its a memory suckling pig of a program and its integration with games other then ones from valve are incredibly poor. some may argue that its perfectly fine for them and that its okay for them but heres my icing on the cake that drives me up the wall and its the fact that it is so unstable I have friends constantly logging off because it becomes unresponsive or it simply just quits on itself sure I'll still use it but I sure as hell don't like it....

As for your CD key suck it up and wait out for the new one they give you unfortunately LameStop will always assume that you are some pirate who lurks on thepiratebay or some nonsense like that simply because you want to buy a pc game and not go all thumbs with your gaming its unfortunate but true since they think they are doing so much for the gaming industry (not) they will always make sure buying games is brutally hard for their customers so wait it out and enjoy your new game just remember to shake your fist at the right people.

otherwise get the money and throw it at another copy of it because its unfortunately the quickest and easiest way of course by now you can tell that someone like me would never do that.

Isn't really Gamestop's fault though. Assuming it was a keygen they have no way to check for that, and as an employee I'd think it's a little suspicious too. On the other hand, not sure about American laws, but Gamestop has to prove you stole it, right? Chances are however that if you did as I said Steamworks could reset the key for you.

Typing in the key on a laptop doesn't constitute proof though, you might've had a different account or something.
I'd recommend laying low until you get word from Support, and then bring out the cannons of vicious justice on Gamestop... assuming the news are bad, of course. :p

This happened to a friend of mine once. He sent an email[footnote]remember to include a photo/scan of the CD key[/footnote] to valve and they sorted it out within the next few hours. That wasn't in a holiday though, so it would probably take a few days for you, so I'd suggest you wait until you come back.

As for the gamestop employees, yes, they were definitely in the wrong. They harassed you for no reason when they should have helped you. A complaint to the manager should set things straight, no need for lawyers.

Seriously. If a simple clerk at any shop tells you that you want to scam them and throws you out with nothing then you just politely ask to see his superior/shop manager. If those types still refuse to solve your problem then you are free to unleash hell on em.
And yes it is their responsibility. They sold you a faulty product and its their problem to fix it with publisher while providing you either a full refund or new copy.

And it still has nothing to do with Steam app itself.

What's the CD-key got to do with Steam?

And if you have proof of purchase (i.e. the receipt) then they have no reason to turn you away.

Something about Ubisoft that tends to be incompetent. My friend had the exact same issue with his bought copy of Far Cry 2, so he was forced to crack it.

Something similar happened to me with Burnout: Paradise for the PC. Don't get me wrong, I'll torrent a game now and then, but I went out and bough B:p at game stop, came home, played it for a month or two, and recently as i went to log in it says "This CD Key Is Already In Use". No one I talk to at EA seems to give a ****, last time I buy an EA product :/

It seems Steam has a backup against the arses who have caused this mess. You just better have your receipt (and make it a habit to not throw them away).

And on another note, never step into Gamestop again. If they treat you like that, then they don't deserve you as a customer.
