Just because the games have the same goals (a.k.a. take ball, shoot ball, score, win) doesn't mean that they're the same every time. Hell, I remember where you couldn't make your own guy in sports games. Now its a complete gyp if they don't let you do that. The graphics get better, controlling your team has more options, maybe different celebrations, different things which with to make your guy, they update more things then simply the rosters.

personally the only sports games I play are NHL ones. I have alot of fun playing them online.

Unless you count Racing games as sports, I like them too.

I don't think they are bad games, they just seem to release them too frequently with little or no improvement.

Awhile ago EA and 2k were both comparable quality but distinctly different football games; when 2k outsold EA one year they decided they'd had enough of this competition crap and paid for an exclusivity deal with the NFL, effectively creating a monopoly. Other leagues followed suit, though not all with EA. Now that only one company can use the actual teams in each sport there's no need to innovate and the companies certainly aren't going to shell out more for development than they have to. Mediocre genre turned into crap.

EDIT: hell why not every 4 years, you can pretend your playing the world cup :p

$60 for updated rosters? How does that justify it?
Quite easily, by the fact that it's more fun (if you're into sports) to play with the current team roosters.
And as pointed out above, most people that buy these games are "casual" gamers.
...So? It costs the developers almost nothing to update the statistics. Charging $60 is ripping people off.

Whatever, not my money, too bad the money these developers make goes back to making more crap.

Very true, I also can't see why you can't just play the sport in real life
not everyone can run through 300 pound linemen or run for hours on end while dribbling a ball down field, that's where the game comes in.
that or bragging rights.

I think it's much more satisfying to get a headshot or get a killing spree
