found this article on digg yesterday. It's weird but although I came into the article expecting to find an article that was totally retarded, I wound up agreeing with the guy...

Haha I understand that. I just did it because the original link is freaking huge, and using tinyurl is a habit. Here's the "retarded huge" link: http://slapstic.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=70:why-i-cant-get-excited-for-fable-2-and-fallout-3&catid=10:eek:pinion-articles

Well... I personally think that this guy's problem is that he doesn't immerse himself in what he is doing. He takes games as a thing to beat not something to experience.

"How many times can you bring down a helicopter in GTA IV and it still be "cool"? I'll tell you: quite a few, but there is a definite limit."

Clearly hes never taken one down with a 9mm.

Go right ahead, if you can give compelling reasons. I'd read that shit.
I don't know, I didn't find him saying he couldn't be bothered with the story-line particularly compelling. At least, no more so than asparagus.

He sounds like a straightforward guy. Start game, finish game, done. Having a giant open world can be intimidating or confusing or make you feel like you don't know what to so I understand where he's coming from. Different strokes...

Just someone that doesn't like open world games? There's people like that everywhere. Seems there are just some people who, when presented with a big, open world, just don't know what to do. So instead of trying out the story (an hour or two is NOT testing the story) they muck around in the world for a little.

Problem is, they haven't played enough missions/story to learn more about the game, and wihtout that knowledge they can't really appreciate what they can do in the world.

Fair enough, not to like that sort of genre, but it's all just personal opinion, and the writers arguments were hardly compelling.

It's because he does things before he's got into it. For example, he goes out, does a couple of missions then fucks around with the game's limits. Once he's done that, the story holds no excitement. He is doing things in the wrong order.

So everyone must adhere to a strict order in a game that offers you the choice to do whatever you want? Give me a break. He's not saying they're bad games nor does he try and impose his opinions on the reader. He's simply writing down his thoughts on why he's not excited for these games. I too am not interested in either Fable 2 or Fallout 3, maybe not for the same reasons as this guy, they just don't appeal to me.

Seems a lot of people here find it hard to believe people aren't excited for these 'awesome games' or that people can't enjoy certain games to the same level as other people. It's either 'he's not trying hard enough' or they're just trying to be 'controversial'. The thing is about that second point is that the only person who could possibly have the intent on being 'controversial' would be the the person who posted it here.

Ok so there's an interesting thing going on here. The people who say they don't like open world games say they would like to have a little more specific gameplay because they wander around fiddling with the game and doing nothing 'productive' too fast. I visit the Bethesda forums a lot and the people there say that the games aren't open enough! They say that games like Oblivion hold your hand too much and there's not enough open gameplay. Now that's strange.

Well it's pretty simple, anyone who likes Oblivion enough to visit the forums is probably the sort of person who enjoys open-world games.
