It's because he does things before he's got into it. For example, he goes out, does a couple of missions then fucks around with the game's limits. Once he's done that, the story holds no excitement. He is doing things in the wrong order.
So everyone must adhere to a strict order in a game that offers you the choice to do whatever you want? Give me a break. He's not saying they're bad games nor does he try and impose his opinions on the reader. He's simply writing down his thoughts on why he's not excited for these games. I too am not interested in either Fable 2 or Fallout 3, maybe not for the same reasons as this guy, they just don't appeal to me.

Seems a lot of people here find it hard to believe people aren't excited for these 'awesome games' or that people can't enjoy certain games to the same level as other people. It's either 'he's not trying hard enough' or they're just trying to be 'controversial'. The thing is about that second point is that the only person who could possibly have the intent on being 'controversial' would be the the person who posted it here.
I agree with this 100%. It seems incredibly close-minded to tell someone that they're "playing the game wrong." If somebody isn't having fun with a game (and knows what they're doing) then it's not their fault.

I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is that you're not playing it in the order to unlock as much longevity as possible.

Whether or not you enjoy a game is subject to personal opinion, nothing much can change that.
I played through alot of games exploring the secrets, i like that, it's a challenge besides doing core quests/missions.
Some people find more enjoyment in just getting the game over with so they can play the next one.
no harm in it.
But then again i think opinion isn't only swayed by what style the game-play is.
It all depends on how enjoyable the game is as a whole.

which again is subject to personal opinion.

Huh. I don't get it. What is this guy's point? That linear is better than open? He sure failed to back that up with any compelling arguments. I don't see how the 'linear' structure of Bioshock is any different from the linear mission progression of GTA4.

He goes on about how he loved plot-shallow open world games like Crackdown and then says a linear, level-based game like Bioshock is 'worth more in the end?' Does this seem like a contradiction to anyone else?

Oh wait his problem with open-world games is that 'moving through the world needs to be fun.' I guess driving a ferrari at top speed through downtown Manhatten isn't fun to him. Wow. Sucks to be him I guess.

Some people just don't 'get' certain games. That's his loss.
So if I don't like math class, I don't "get" it?
No, but if you approach it in the wrong way you don't. That, and actually what you're saying is somewhat true. If you don't get something, you usually don't like it. Of course it isn't always true the other way around, but it can be.

As much as I disagree with the guys tastes he didn't preach anything, he didn't say they were bad games, he just said he preferred a different type of game. So animosity like Grampy_bone's above is quite unnecessary.

Cute how the escapist thread with the link to his article has more replies than his actual article.
I agree with him on the fact that sometimes you just want to run around and destroy as much as possible and ignore the storyline, but i don't get why it "stops being fun" after he's done it. Normally i can just pick it back up.

I blame a lack of creativity. I know I had hours of fun in GTAIV selectively running over female hipsters with a backage car, being sure to honk the horn just before every meat collision.

Allow me:

"Two of the biggest items ever, a fork and a knife, aren't and never have been even the slightest bit interesting to me. I almost feel bad for not caring about them; It seems that almost every person is planning on buying them or already has them, and I'm sure that they have both sold, and will continue to sell millions. I can't make myself care, however, because I know that items of that type always seem to disappoint me.

It never fails: every time I get an item that's not bolted down, I use them like they were designed for for a bit, but then wind up ignoring their intended purpose and simply run around testing the limits of the world. When playing with a spoon, I tend to just see how hard I can jam it into myself and then survive as long as I can. That's fun for a few hours, but after I get done, I really feel no reason to pick it up again.. The same goes for straws. I made it through a juice pack, and after a few sips, chewing on it a bit, and twirling it in my fingers, I felt like I had done everything with it. I still have fun sucking juice with it, but it's so simple it really isn't any real challenge.

Maybe that's my problem with these utensils. I like to see how much of a challenge I can set up for myself very early on, and once I think I can make it out of any situation, any problem that the utensil throws at me in the form of it's designated use becomes uninteresting. How many times can you cut a steak with a knife and still be "cool"? I'll tell you: quite a few, but there is a definite limit.

The types of utensils that have any sort of lasting appeal to me are the ones where it's actual use by itself is fun. I enjoyed the original glass of water because you were almost constantly filling it up, and had a ton of different modes of transportation, but again, I put about 8 hours into it before getting bored with the drinks.

I took some photos with a camera for dozens of hours, just because the snapshot mechanic was so ridiculously fun. The same goes for painting. Once your canvas gets really beefed up, it's literally a blast to go visually jumping across the paint for a few hours, looking for details and touching it up while you do it. (expert tip: play Metallica's new album, The Death Magnetic, alongside painting to make it even more awesome.)

So bringing this back around, I know I would only enjoy fork and kinfe for a short period of time if I got them. Sure, I'd have fun for a day or so figuring out all the cool things the developers have thrown in and discovering the limits of these items, but therein lies the problem: once I find all the limits, the utensil would stop being fun for me. I'd quit doing their designated use, play around for a bit, and then move on to a different item without ever really getting anywhere life-wise.

I understand why people like utensils like Fork, Knife, Spoon, etc. I like them too. They're fun, but for me personally, the experience that I get out of more closed, blunt items like an industrial meatgrinder is always worth more in the end.

Discuss!

Ps: I'm a moron."

See, this makes exactly as much sense as the original post. Dude is complaining he gets bored of the game he isn't playing because he can do other stuff in the game he doesn't really have to... It's like complaining someone gave you a million dollars cause now you felt like giving up your job, friends and family, and now you're bored.

Nope. If I'm saying I like strawberries, but I also think steak is the best food in the world, am I contradicting myself?

That article is just kind of stupid. I would also dislike games if I bought them when they came out and only played them for a few hours. I used 5 times the price of a movie for only double the entertainment time.

I could also right a thing about how I don't particularly care for asparagus and make it just as compelling, because that wasn't at all compelling. It's about a guy who doesn't try to enjoy games, or actually play them, and gets bored.
