"About what?" You might ask. Well, about nothing really.

This topic is to list the strange things that make you "well-up", "get misty", "shead a tear", or any other form of crying. Specifically: the things that you find strange for making you cry...as in you have no idea WHY it's making you get all watery-eyed, but it just is.

An example of this (and the inspiration for this topic that will no doubt be buried with 20 responses, tops, I'm sure) is the fact that on my way home from work today I was listening to my iPod and the ending theme to Final Fantasy 3 came up. For clarification, I'd imagine the majority of you know it as Final Fantasy 6, but since I grew up with the game as it originally came out on the SNES here in America, I will forever know it as FFF3GD (Final Fantasy Fucking 3 God Damnit). Now, I don't know if it was a wave of nostalgia that I found myself drowning in or what, but as I envisioned the little scenes that accompany the music to FF3's ending I just couldn't stop myself: I cried. Tried to hold it back (seeing as how I didn't want to burst into tears on the city bus) but in the ended just started sobbing lightly to myself for seemingly no reason at all.

Specifically I'm talking about the music that plays during each character's individual scene.

So, my fellow Escapists, what is it that makes you cry for "absolutely no reason"? What songs/books/games/movies/whatever make you get all weepy for no other reason than it simply striking at something within you that you (apparently) don't even know?

The ending of Marley And Me.

I'm not even a dog person.

That's the only one I can think of that doesn't really have a reason behind it. Other things, like the ending of Persona 4 or the future-Christmas at Bob Cratchit's house in Muppet Christmas Carol all have very good reasons for making me choke up. Well, okay...

The Muppet Christmas Carol one might count, since I've never seen anybody else mention it in threads like this.

As far as games go: Bioshock. Bioshock has this strange issue with me, because whenever I had to choose to harvest or save a Little Sister, My moral compass made me save them, but I always cried, every time, and I mean every time I saved them. I don't know why, but little children make me quite emotional, even though I am not a parent, and I usually express disinterest in most children.

I'd love to say King Kong: The Game as I always do on these crying posts, but strangely, I know why that bothers me.

Movies: Fritz Lang's Metropolis oddly enough. I think it's because it's a happy ending, but it makes me shed a manly tear and smile.

Music: If I'm in the wrong mood, I'll start crying, so I don't think this one counts in my case.

Sadly, everything that makes me cry is based on the fact I'm more sensitive then I'd like to admit, but a lot of it is because I tie everything to memories.

I don't usually get so invested in short films with characters I hardly know about that but something about Disney's Paperman clicked with me.

The scene from A Knights Tale where the main character reunites with his blind father. I don't know why but that scene gets me misty eyed every time.

The scene towards the end of Children of men where the baby starts crying in the middle of a warzone and everything just stops. All the soldiers stop fighting, wounded people reach out to touch the baby, everything comes to a screeching halt. Something about that scene gets me every time.

Here's the link since I still don't know how to embed things here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBzWTIexszQ

When I watch "Grave of the Fireflies," I cry in the 1st 5 minutes when I hear a little girl laugh. I know she's going to starve to death alone in a cave thinking about her dead mother. I've seen it a million times, but it always gets me.

There's also the ASPCA commercials, if they're playing a depressing enough song.

The end of Schindler's List, where he is running around completely frantic, tearing off his cloths wondering how many more Jews he could have save if he had sold them. That crushing feeling he had that the fact that there were more Jews to save meant that his venture was a complete failure. Made me cry more than anything I can remember.

Also, several moments in the Mass Effect series.

And when I was like 9 I cried like a baby in Cast Away when Tom Hanks lost Wilson.

Anything where harm comes to dogs has a high chance of making me cry(sniveling at best, not tears accompanied by load moaning), or have to fight back tears. I don't feel this way towards cats (most of the time at least), bunnies, or any other kind of animal, just dogs. It is to the point that I simply refuse to watch a movie where a dog is harmed and/or killed because I would probably just be wrecked for the rest of the day.

I will also tear up slightly pretty much without any sort of stimuli. Not crying, nor sad mind you, but my eyes may just water briefly and when it happens in public, my breath may become a bit more erratic out of nervousness because my body is a dick.

When I saw the Les Mis movie I was strong through most of it... till the end, then I resorted to constantly wiping tears into my jacket, saying "Don't fucking cry don't fucking cry don't fucking cry..." over and over again in my mind.

There was also that bit in Kingdom Hearts... I don't know why but the first time it happened I teared up and was like "WHYYYYYY"

That was the best part of Wreck-It Ralph. The animation was gorgeous. I think was really resonates in the short is how the mundane becomes magical. A chance meeting on the train station, and the guy is given the rare chance to take the opportunity and see where it leads him. It doesn't even need to be a romance, just an encounter that he was lucky enough to experience.

Why with all the crying?

WHY NOT ZOIDBERG!? Wub-wub-wub-wub-wub! *pincers click*

(I can't be the only one who read that in Zoidberg's voice)

I can't say anything makes me cry for "absolutely no reason". I think, in most cases where someone is crying for apparently no reason, they probably have a very good reason, and just aren't aware of it.

Like the taste of minestrone in Ratatouille triggers the cynical, bitter critic's memories of a happy childhood he'd forgotten.

OT: Seymour the dog, that is all. Nearly bawled when he
popped up in The Lonesome Road DLC for New Vegas
I know some people already know he's there but still.

About 80% of the time I hear this song:

What makes it odd is that the person it reminds me of hasn't been a part of my life for years and I've long since moved on, I think it's like the OP where you literally start living and breathing a part of your past. Very human.

Every goddamn time I play Mass Effect 3, I cry at this part.

EDIT: I have another one. The song Danny Boy, doesn't matter who is singing it, I just start balling when I hear it.

For video games, when Agro falls off the cliff...gets me every time.

For non video games, it's gotta be this. Watch this and be inspired...if you put up with how long it is, I promise you'll be a little misty eyed as well.

Well, honestly I just finished A Memory of Light (Awesome book by the way) and I shed a few tears at several points there. I also shed a tear when I finished the book, though that was because it's the last thing from Robert Jordan that I will ever get to read. His legacy is now complete almost 5 years after his death, I'm glad the series finally came to an end, but at the same time I'm really sad too. I also shed a tear when I watched a short documentary on the series and how it affected the fantasy genre and other authors.

One thing that made me get really sad and almost cry recently was when I was watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Ling Greed killed bimo or whatever his name was. His pitiful crying and repetition of 'But I'm your friend' got me all watery eyed and I haven't the foggiest as to why it did.
