So, we see this in games and film all the time. An evil god has been locked up for a thousand years and is just dying to be released. Why on EARTH would you want to let something like this out? This isn't a criticism, I'm honestly asking the question and hoping to get answers. So many villains seem to be doing it "just because" or for the empty promise of power. There has to be at least ONE really good reason for someone to try and release an evil god from his dimensional prison. So what's yours?

Mine: Psychosis. Only someone with a genuinely ill perception of reality operating outside normal logic would want to do something like this.

NOW PROVE ME WRONG!

I would if i was possessed by said dark god. But that is not me making a conscious decision, so does that count?

Revenge. That's usually the case. Evil guy had his family killed or sees his village die, usually because of come coporate greed or stupid mistake. He sees that earth has no point in living on, so he summons Evil God to do the job. And if it has a chance of ultimate power, the better.

Hey, it'd be kind of interesting. It's like a big red button labelled "Do not press or the world will end". Could you resist? I couldn't. Consider that button pushed. This is a bit different as it requires effort and there isn't much curiosity to be satisfied by doing it. But it's still sorta the same.

From my vast knowledge of Dark Gods, they generally drive people to the point of insanity, or just use them as puppets in their task of what they do everyday, try to take over the world!

Promise of power is usually the reason, they just dont think its a false promise and that by freeing said evil god that they will be granted ultimate power of some kind. So Gulible people fit nicely.

Not to mention idiots who just accidently release the dark god, walking around i'll kill this ogre attacking me, woops i killed it on that summoning ring where its written in big letters 'do not shed blood here or you'll summon an ultimate evil'

Also people who think they can control it and use it to their advantage.

Or people who plan to let it destroy a bunch of people they dont like and then banish it again using a handy item of extreme plot significance.

The list of possible reasons goes on.

Because every movie is told from the perspective of the "hero", making their motives seem overly evil and dastardly. The "villians" probably think they're doing the world a favor. Perhaps all the evil stuff we hear about the dark lord is nothing but filthy propaganda and he is in reality a big lovable saviour. Perhaps the "villians" think that the dark lord will grant them power when he have established his rule. I 'unno, frankly.

I do know that good and evil are subjective perceptions, though, so the "evil" god will only be evil in the eyes of those depicted as "good", if you get my drift.

I would release a dark god so as to become one with it's awesome powers and embark on a power trip never before seen by the universe.

Second chance. Its usually the case where the followers of said dark god is going to cleanse the world and make way for a new eden. Its just cliche and stock.

Which kind of dark god?

I mean if it's the "unknowable intelligence from beyond space, bending it's indomitable will to the eradication of mankind" type, then no. Unless it's coming was inevitable as soon as the stars were right, at which point I would, because I would want to be eaten first [http://www.geocities.com/neverclan/c/cthulhu.html].

If it's the "turn the world into a living hell for everyone except their chosen, who live a sybaritic life of excess and decadence" type, then all glory to Slaanesh, and you will all be my toys for eternity, moo hoo haa haaa!

Would said dark god give the man who freed him power, fame, and glory beyond his wildest dreams? Would the dark god give me a seat at his right hand? Would I be able to annihilate those who I deemed unfit to live?

Yes?

I'm in. Show me where to sign.
