Well maybe a Bishop or Cardinal would do it, so he can prove God, or maybe in this case Gods exist....Eh??? Adding a new dimension to is.

I like Ashnard's reason from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance...
He just wants a good fight. He loves challenges and wants to see how he'd fare against a fucking GOD. Plus, he'd love the chaos it'd bring.

They didn't call him Mad King Ashnard for nothing. =P

If the incentive of candy or some chocolate confection was involved, then summoning a dark lord/god would be deemed "ok" by me.

What Im saying is that normally in these scenarios the Antagonist is given the incentive of power, money, or reviving a dead relation, as cause for releasing the atrocity.

or

your a villain that went to the Captain Planet school of bad guys.

To see my dreams of world domination shattered as I became consumed by the infinite evil of the abomination that I have unleashed upon the world of course. Isn't that every evil wizards boy hood fantasy?

Or maybe finally grab that ultra rare sword the guy's been hoarding for like a millenia.

Some ideas:

I think many a Dark God would try to convince it's would-be liberators that it was a benevolent deity. I believe Takhisis from the Dragonlance novels tried this one during the 'War of Souls'.

A character may also be arrogant enough to believe he can challenge a Dark God weakened by aeons of imprisonment and take the God's power for himself. The challenger usually realises that he is seriously outmatched and no longer has the ability to lock Asmodeus Ba'al back up again.

The Gods of Light or Good may actually NEED the God of Darkness around to justify their existence, so they arrange 'leak' the Ritual of Unbinding to some odd cultists someplace in a kind of apocalyptic conspiracy theory.

Get rid of people whom I dislike and convince him to give me super powers if I am lucky.

Because I can.
Also, so it can grab me my pepsi while I'm playing the latest Guitar Hero game.

On rare occasions, the Dark God is pretending to be something else, like a holy spirit, and tricks them, but, like I said, it's rare.

EDIT: Ninja'd. Damnit.

Alright, because they can. Seriously. That usually seems to be the reason.

I would do it for the promise of power and/or status in the new world order. of course, you have to think of which dark god you resurrect, Dagon BAD IDEA, Yog-sothoth is ok i guess, and Cthulhu... no idea.

so i can finaly find a good challanger, then kick his ass then lock him up again. then i would put on my hat and duster and walk off into the sunset, never to be seen again. thus is the legand of the lone wanderer.

lol

Like many of my fellow Escapists, I would do it for shits and giggles, otherwise known as the 'Jonathan Teatime Approach'.
