Bearing in mind we are judging them on their games (so Steam doesn't count) What have valve made recently that you have played? Wikipedia says their last big game was 2009 (Left4dead2) left4dead1 was 2008 and team fortress 2 was 2007. Their upcoming list is portal 2 (fun I agree 2011) and Episode 3 (yeah..thats kind of a running joke by now).
Relic meanwhile have dawn of war 2 (2009), company of heroes expansion (2009), company of heroes online (2010), Dawn of war 2: Chaos Rising (2010), Dawn of war 2: retribution (2011) and on the upcoming list have Space Marine (Q3 2011) and Company of Heroes 2 (TBA August 2011).
As innovative as portal was and as fun as I'm sure portal 2 is they have no replayability once you have figured out the puzzles. Once you know the solutions they don't change.
If this seems biased at all it's because I'm hoping for a rebuttal supporting valve. [sub](apologies for picking your post to quote but you said you were voting valve so I have to at least attempt a conversion).[/sub]
That a company is more productive doesn't mean they are superior.
I'm not sure what you want me to say. I play Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead /2, Alien Swarm, Day of Defeat and Gmod on a regular basis (800hrs TF2 and 300hrs L4D2 clocked). I love Half Life 2 and the episodes, and I've gone through both those and Portal about 3-4 times. I like VALVe's games. That they made steam is just a bonus.
I disagree about replayability. Portal has a challenge mode which makes each puzzle harder. You can practice speedrunning the puzzles, or you can, like I have, go through it again because of the feel and the story of the game. As for Portal 2, the addition of multiplayer will add a lot of replayability. I understand if someone doesn't want to play through Portal after beating it, but I do. I like beating the challenges, I like getting the difficult achievements, and I like playing games I already know, because I can get a deeper experience the second time around. Diff'rent strokes and all that.
As I already mentioned, I'm also a fan of Relic. Having bought Both DoW games, all their expansions (except Retribution) as well as Company of heroes and both expansions, I am not going to badmouth them. I feel their games are very good, and they are among the best game makers in my opinion. But VALVe has more games that I've played for a longer time (all the way back to the first Half Life, Opposing Force and Blue Shift and deathmatches on LAN), and even if they are slower to make games, it's only because they ensure quality in all aspects. That is at least how I see them. People may complain about TF2's new updates, but that's a different discussion that I'm not getting into.
In March Mayhem, I have voted Relic so far. But I don't think they're superior to VALVe. Simple.
