Because lots of people take the competition very seriously and are somewhat bad sports about it (at least, those are the ones that stand out). I'm pretty bad at competitive games, so I get fun out of single player games and playing multiplayer games with friends (usually doing silly and dumb stuff).

Haters gotta hate. Just have to work around them.

I've been playing MW2 a lot recently and I tend to end up with people like this periodically. I'm pretty sure if you made a list of all of the "newbish" weaponry that everyone tends to complain about then I think everyone would probably be running around with SMGs the whole time. Lets see....
You got your newb tubes
Your Stopping Power sniper rifles
The Commando perk
Oh, and my personal favorite....The riot shield and throwing knife combo. They put an item in the game that actually promotes team work and people slam you for using it. Am I missing anything?

So... 4chan?

I think that people are naturally competitive. So, this is another facet to let out that desire to be number one.

Really? I don't get that at all... but then again, the group I game with is pretty laid back, so hey

Same except for one guy.

And I don't play seriously. I might quit if I keep ending up on a bad team out of frustration or just a headache because it seems our defense was made of paper mache.

Because some people take competition seriously. There is nothing wrong with this, but they don't mix well with the people who are incapable of actually trying beyond what makes it fun for them. One on extreme, we have the people who care about nothing but winning, and on the other extreme we have the people who screw around the entire time and hold their team back.

We just need to be with the right people. I don't like it when my teammates are screwing around or purposefully messing me up, so I try to play with people who will actually play the freaking game. If you only want to play 'cause it's fun, then have fun with it, but try not to screw it up for your teammates. I mean, someone who wants to play in the NFL will take any game of football seriously, whereas a random jr. higher will just have fun and mess around: there's nothing wrong with either of them, as long as they don't get in each other's way.

The point is, there's nothing wrong with taking competition seriously. Some people take it too far, but don't go complaining because some people actually care about the game.

I hate people who are all "MAKE LOVE NOT WAR STOP THE E-PEEN!"

It's the internet, get used to it.

Honestly, its just the shit online community, mostly Live. The major games are mostly all FPS, and those cater to annoying little kids and douchebags, both of who have no other lives. Gaming is basically their only accomplishment and pride at that point in life, and they misuderstand the purpose: to have fun. Its not that there arent players who play for fun and everything, its just most of the loud ones are so loud and obnoxious that they force the rest into hiding. Im sure that if you have a mic, youve turned it off or unplugged to hide from annoying players. Theyre just the ones that you notice.

A good game to play is to just say something really random, and stick to it, and ignore them. afriend of mine and I were listening to an argument between two players in a MW2 game, when he just goes "You know what? I wish I was a kangaroo. Then I could keep shit in my pouch, and that shit would be awesome."Its more fun to toy with them. And if possible, make the game a friendly atmosphere. mute the douchebags, and start talking like a normal person, and youll get some people wholl talk.

And despite what people are saying, yes competition is good, and take it seriously, but dont be an asshole about it. Body shots ad scoping are allowed, dont be a dick about people doing it. Everytime you die isnt gay. Seriously, be competetive, but please be respectful.

People are just obsessed with winning at everything, its human nature.
Although competitive 'gaming' didnt exist all that much in the era of pong and space invaders compared to nowadays.

Admittedly i get pissed off to quite some extent in games but mainly at the guys ON my team for some reason, when your teammate grabs all the heavy weapons and jumps off a cliff dening their use to everyone, when you play an RTS and your teammate spams low level infantry around their base.
Then you realise what they did was lame, but it is still a game.
I dont seem to get as p'oed when some 'MLG 1337 hAlO/cODFag' runs around knifing eveyone, or camps in a glitch with one of them bloody thermal scopes.

Although when playing split screen or system link with my mates competition is virtually non-existant, as one of them said just after another friend said "Ahhhh dude you rocketed me in the head coooool", games in a twisted way are a nice way to chill out and just frag your buddies for funsies.

Maybe its just hard for everyone to tolerate all those COMPETATATAAIVE GAMERRRRZZZ LOLOLZOLZZ, who are either, a, 2-12 yr old kids playing and screaming when mommy isnt around or, b, very fat or very skinny easily hateable tossers with no life, friends or job, living in mommas basement drinking chocolate milk.

Which is pretty damn understandable.

It's called competitive multiplayer for a reason.
Besides, the people who are hurling these insults calm down after about 30 seconds after the match.

Serious is different than being a douche. You can be serious about playing a game and still be perfectly civil. The reason that many people are not civil on such games is that in general, although fun, fps's are pretty simple games overall, and are thereby more likely to contain idiots and douchebags who are compensating for something, and shouting "LOL U R TEH NOOBZOR" gives them a great big egotistical stiffy...
And their under the veil of being anonymous on the internet.
If you met those people in real life I bet they would never say that stuff to your face
