Shows how smart they are, seriously I have never heard of a beating that didn't leave a mark. Even a light slapping would leave something for a day or two. Heck I find bruises on me that I never felt how they happened.
Wow, I'm sorry you are so frail, but the rest of the human race can take a bit more of a beating then that.

Do you mean to insinuate that you have witnessed every other member of the human race take a beating? If you have, did you videotape it? I desperately want to see that now that I think of it.

I guess you are in a select few of people. Everybody I know has gotten bruises that they never felt happen.

I even asked a doctor once, I was told it is quite common.

It's good to see the Middle East is stormrolling into the 21st Century.

Regardless of their archaic beliefs they need to break free of their current way of life and realize the world DOES change.

Yes, let's get on our high horses and rejoice in the obvious and universal superiority of our culture.

A silly ruling, but it is their ruling.

Now, while we are seated on our steeds of pretend superiority, let's ride off into the sunset and look at the obvious wrongs our own fucking culture needs righted, shall we?

Well, I lived in the UAE and other Islamic societies all my life, so I'm just going to throw this out there before everyone goes "amagad that's not how they do it in ameriker, savages!"

It's just the way it goes down there. Don't picture some guy with 3 wives who beats them every day or something, it only happens with a few "traditional" people and in order to keep up with the islamic laws that they follow and respect, they have to compromise while adjusting it to some degree so that it's acceptable in today's society.

Hence "as long as no marks are left". It basically means you can't hit harder than a soft slap or a spank or something, something I'm sure happens all over the world anyway.
To children maybe, but to wives, no. I think it's very old-fashioned (in a very bad way) for a husband to ever strike his wife out of anger/discipline. I'm sure this happens in many countries, including the USA, but I believe these men are generally regarded as weak/idiotic in most American & European countries.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen in non-UAE countries; I'm just saying that it is highly socially unacceptable and illegal.

First, what culture are "We" apart of?
Second, what's wrong with it?
Third, my high-horse is higher than yours... and it's prettier too.

That's irrelevant. All that matters is, judging by most comments in this thread, that 'our' culture is better than The Islams[footnote]Or, in actuality: The culture of the people of the UAE, which is rooted in Islamic thought, but not necessarily one and the same.[/footnote]

From latent discrimination against minorities to physical violence against minorities to the hypergreed of hypercapitalists to the growing divergence of wealth to multicultural tensions, I can think of quite a few that need intellectual imput now spend on self-righteous buttclapping.

But mine is pink, and has a horn on its head, and is called Bubbles.

Differant countries make their own laws, if you dont agree with them then you can leave, fairly simple really.....unless you're a prisoner...but i digress. Leave for greener pastures if you like.

While I disapprove of men 'disciplining' their wives, this seems like a court saying it's alright to spank your kids as long as you don't seriously hurt them. Can't say I disagree with that.

But hey, I choose not to judge them, so I won't all the people calling them backwards and archaic after reading a six sentence (out of context) article connecting a ruling on a man who did get in trouble for beating his wife and child with the deep Islamic roots that exist in a region that has lived under Islam for over a thousand years (and had an advertisement for Abu Dhabi next to it on my screen).

Shows you've never had cops phonebook you.
Never been phonebook'ed, but they did break my jaw and two ribs.
That, however, does tend to leave a mark or two... whereas phonebooking doesn't start leaving marks until they're approaching 'internal injuries' territory.

Not a surprise to me, and yet another reason why I will never ever go to that part of the world. Simply hearing about it disgusts me, and stuff like this only reinforces it. All my Anthropology classes in college may have gone on about "cultural relativism" and all that, but allowing "physical discipline" under law is not justified in my book. Those people can live in their medieval culture. I'll stay in America.

What do you think phonebooking means? The Urban dictionary calls it:
The urban dictionary can fuck right off. Phonebooking is a venerable police tradition where a phone book is held against someone's abdomen and then hit repeatedly with a baton (or sometimes in older days one of those fuck off chunky bakerlite phones for added laughs).

And you say this leaves no bruising, but hurts, up until near internal organ damage?
Yep, the abdomen is one of the most bruise resistant parts of the body, especially when the power of the strike is transfered across a wide area (such as the general height and width of a phonebook). Biggest danger is the plods not easing up in time and you get a ruptured spleen.

What the hell did you do to deserve this?!
