New gaming devices like Wii Fit might bug the hardcore gamer, but they seem to be doing wonders for humanity.
May be a little too far.
Is it? Games like Wii Fit are helping people to stay in shape (and given the rate of obesity in this country, that's huge). They have (or are at least working on) "games" that help diabetic kids have a little fun while they track their blood sugar. It makes the long haul of physical therapy more tolerable.

I'm not saying Nintendo needs a Nobel Prize any time soon, but come on. They are definitely making an impact.
Really? Just because lot's of people buy them doesn't mean they actually use them. I honestly do not know a single person who has bought the Wii-Fit who actually still uses it.

70% of body shape is down to diet anyway, so it's not going to make that much of an impact. Especially considering the kind of exercise you can achieve on the Wii-Fit is fairly low in intensity, whereas people trying to lose weight tend to require high intensity (interval training, spinning classes, sprinting etc.).
I know a lot of people that still use them, myself included. And actually, the exercises you can do on the Wii are very good for weight loss. You don't need a super-high intensity work out to lose weight. And while diet is important, exercise is the bigger factor. You can eat whatever the fuck you want IF you do enough exercise that your burn remains higher than your intake.

....sorry....i couldn't help it.

OT:This is really cool.
Glad to see she caught this early on.
Keep up the good work Wii Fit!
I would love to see some more Dr. Mario.

As for a contribution to this thread I've got nothing. I have never used wii fit but it sounds like a great game/ accessory. Even if it isn't legitimate exercise as some of you have pointed out it's getting families together far more effectively than any other mainstream game.
Unless you're this family.

Maybe we can have a breakthrough like this with the Kinect.

Please step in front of Kinect Camera

scanning....

Your diagnosis: total dumbshit...please visit your doctor for more options

OT: Seriously, I think that was pretty cool. It may be giving the board-thingy a bit too much credit for the diagnosis, seeing as it didn't actually giver her the diagnosis. Still, it got her pointed in the right direction. Two thumbs up.

Little bit of a miss leading title, I thought it told her that she had the Disease, still a intresting story though.

What did you want to see me about?
Well, my Wii says I'm slightly off balance all the time.
....Your Wii?
Yes.
....Right, I'm going to have to call a specialist. Tracy, get me Dr.Mario.

Nintendo, USE THIS.

A couple of reprograms and you got a system that can find several nuerlogical disorders and tell people they need to see a doctor.

I'm happy that she found out, but at the same time it's not like Wii Fit was designed to help people in this way. It was a nice coincidence that worked out for the best, though.
Agreed. The only reason she caught it was that she knew enough to pay attention to that oddity.

The way the title is worded, I thought the game straight up said "YOU HAVE PARKINSON'S DISEASE!" complete with the dancing balance board thats usually on the screen.

Anyway, glad to see she found out.
Same, I thought the story would be that she may have accidentally been a bit wobbly and the game would come up with a little hint. 'It appears you have Parkinson's Disease, would you like some help?'

OH! From reading the headline, I thought it said on the screen: "You have Parkinson's. You know, the Michael J. Fox disease." Not it gave clues that lead to a doctor diagnosing her with the disease.

That's pretty cool.

It's not like it was designed for this, anyway. Cool that it worked out, though.

I burst out laughing when I read the thread title though. :)

No! Bad headline, bad!

Wii Fit did not tell a woman she had Parkinson's disease. It told here she couldn't keep an equal balance on both feet. Based on her assessment of this as an abnormality, she pursued further diagnosis from a professional and found out she had Parkinson's disease. Wii Fit didn't diagnose her condition; her and her doctor did.

For the same reason, we will not see a Wii Doctor. Computers can measure and model things, even point out abnormalities, but they can't reason about the cause of such things. No matter how complex algorithms get, it always comes down to us humans to find patterns and interpret their meanings.

Please, for the sake of journalism, don't make exaggerated headlines! Don't claim things that didn't happen! Don't make people think that Wii Fit can diagnose medical illness!

Nice to see that someone was able to take a small clue and work from there to reach an actual diagnosis. WiiFit was by no means designed for this sort of thing, I'm sure, but it's cool to see that someone was able to derive so useful knowledge from a simple balance test.

Wii 'Fit' is not real exercise. It's a toy that fools gullible people into thinking their doing some significant exercise when really they are just stepping about waving their arms in a retarded fashion. Sad.
More than they would do otherwise.

Never underestimate the power of waving your arms around hysterically.
