http://www.edge-online.com/news/wii-u-sells-three-million-as-nintendo-cuts-sales-targets/

This doesn't surprise me, but it's still a fairly large number of units sold.

That being said, I'm more surprised that almost 12 million games have sold for the system. That means that that the average number of games bought for the system is just under 4. That's much higher than I was expecting, considering I hear so many people say they own just one or two titles.

So is this the news everyone else was expecting?

Yeah, because it's a quite a good console, despite all the circlejerking on this website :p

Nintendoland is a given, Super Mario Bros U is pretty good, ZombiU is shet, and all the other games are the same as they are on other platforms, so I'm not all that surprised that it's 4 per console.

3 million in it's first six weeks is actually pretty good considering the economic climate at the moment and compares very favorably with the Wii(3.2 million),PS3(Around 1 million I believe)and Xbox 360(less than 1 million). And yet there's still people that will tell you that the Wii U is a flop.Ridiculous

The software figures are interesting though.I think it was Reggie that said that despite being sold at a loss the Wii U only needs one game sold with it to turn a profit so if they're averaging 3-4 games per console then it's profitable right out of the gate

What's strange, is that it says they're still expected to announce a loss, despite the above being the case.

A friend of mine got a WiiU recently and it honestly isn't that bad of a console. I'm not a big fan of the user interface and the current lack of games that interest me(though with games coming out like SMT x Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Smash Bros. and a new Zelda that might change). If they can release more good games(and when the price drops), I might just pick one up.

I really had no expectations on how well it would do though. The prospect of a new console generation just gives me a feeling of 'meh' right now.

Cool

Now some more games would definitely help make it even MORE profitable!

C'mon Nintendo, you have the secret arsenal of games to release...

It's an interesting system bust nothing has peaked my interest yet so I don't really have any thoughts... ugh... good for Nintendo?

Good for Nintendo. I only have Nintendoland and ZombiU on it, but I really enjoy Nintendoland when I am playing it with friends, and ZombiU is pretty good too. Really I would be more surprised if it was actually doing worse.

I actually hadn't been keeping up with it, and I know I've seen a couple of people on here quite certain that Nintendo would be stupid to develop another console, given how poorly this one's doing. It isn't doing that bad.

Then again, I know that the stores around here had trouble keeping Wiis in stock back when they first launched, (I think it was more than a year before there was any surplus on store shelves, and there was no way you were going to find one after about October up until about two years ago), and right now, there seems to be a huge amount of WiiUs still hanging around, so I don't think it's selling particularly well around here.

Still, 3 million in about two months isn't bad, all things considered.

I would guess the Wii U is performing under expectations because they can't even give the Basic Set away. If we see a price drop, I doubt it will be for the Deluxe Set.

We'll definitely see sales pick up once a few more games come out for it, especially Monster Hunter. It will probably be the best selling home console of Holiday 2013.

Yeah, Nintendo's been rather solid for a while. I'm just waiting for that one killer app to fully convince me into buying the Wii U.

This is a good thing. For one, strong sales mean that there are probably going to be more games on the thing, which increases the chances of me wanting to get it. More importantly, strong WiiU sales means that the WiiU will be strong competition for Sony and Microsoft (at least at first), and more competition is a good thing.

Ill be picking one up when Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are released for it. I am surprised it has sold so much I dont know anyone that has one which is unusual or rather unique actually I have always known at least someone who owns a new console as soon as it is released ever since the NES era (ignoring obscure consoles here that had bugger all games).

I hope it does well the more competition for microsoft and sony the better. I really dont know anyone besides me who is interested in one tbh though last time I told someone I would probably get the WiiU eventually they looked at me like I was crazy. It still has a lot of work to reastablish itself among a lot of gamers it seems.

I find it funny how the console is currently being sold at a loss, but there are multiple people saying they'll wait for the price drop. The 3ds was an attempt to sell the console at a profit, and the price drop was a response to that not working. I don't see a price reduction happening with the WiiU, because the price currently has nowhere to go.
