Just another example of just how out of touch Nintendo actually is. Nintendo is a relic trying to survive past it's prime with the use of smoke and mirrors because they are no longer able to compete based on the quality of their overall product. The sooner they go the way of Sega the better off gaming as a whole will be.
Not having a DVD function is hardly what I call "no longer able to compete based on the quality of their product".I buy a games system to play games.
And how will gaming be better if they go Sega?

you all know what this means.

third party support, enough data storage to rival the PS3's blue-ray

unless Microsoft does some thing fast we will be looking at a major market shift in favor of nintendo and sony

Nintendo, do you ever learn? The lack of DVD support is why I am the only person I know (In real life) who actualy has a wii.

Well, now I KNOW I won't be getting a WiiU for my future home or second HD TV. I'll probably get a PS3 or PS4 instead unless Xbox Live becomes free.

Essentially everyone and their dogs have something that can play a dvd, not least a dvd player.

I fail to see why this has any sort of impact on me, i have laptops, computers, dvd players and an xbox that can ALL play dvds, so i hardly need or want another one.

And dont be chatting poop about Blu-rays... i never have needed them and never will.

I've said it before, so long as it actually DOES have 1080p graphics AND a good 3rd party i will buy it anywho. Hell, a nintendo console with decent games? That sounds pretty damn good to me.

I don't care that it doesn't play DVDs. Can it use Netflix like the Wii did? Because if that's the case. I don't care that it doesn't play Blu-Ray. I hate Blu-Ray (for movies). This drives down the price for the WiiU. This can only be a good thing.

Because, obviously, gaming would be better if console manufacturers continued to just do the same thing with shinier graphics. Who needs bigger audiences or multiple ways to play a game? Just give me an updated SNES controller and take my $599+

I would like to bring everyone's attention to the fact that the Wii hardware could actually play DVDs, but the software restricted this ability, which could be changed with some tinkering. It is just Nintendo controlling what you can do.
That is assuming the ToS doesnt allow them to brick your console for "tinkering" like with the 3DS.

Oh the horror! I'll have to use the *gasp* DVD player! That one I keep in the same place as my current console. How dare Nintendo inconvenience my like this, I'll have to boycott their company now and never buy anything from them ever again!

/sarcasm (just in case people didn't get it. got knows there are people who sound like this)

Yeah, cause the inability to play DVDs on a games console is such a negative turn that gaming itself will suffer. Get over yourself. What did you type that message on? Odds are, it's a laptop, or a PC of some variety. Look on the front or on the side. See that drive there? That's where you put discs in. Turns out that machine you use every day can play DVDs. I know, it's like you're seeing the world anew, right?

Not including a generally worthless function like playing DVDs makes the cost of making a Wii U cheaper, which means they can retail it at cheaper. What, you'd prefer a price hike just so if you do get out of your hate trench long enough to buy one you won't have to use a different device to play your DVD of Queer as Folk?

It's not needed, so they didn't put it there. I don't see how this negatively impacts anything for any normal human being.
He has a point with the "out of touch" thing, though. Think about it. What new IP's have Nintendo released in the last 11 years that have actually been good? Even their handheld market is turning into rehashing an old product with a new gimmick to make money off of a huge cash cow.

I don't care about them including a DVD-player, I have plenty of those, but how much does it really cost to include that function? It's not like the console was going to cost $400 but now that they're cutting DVD-playback it'll go down to $250.

Even if it did play DVD or Blu-Ray disks, I wouldn't use it for that. Studies have shown that a regular Blu-Ray player only uses a small fraction of the power that it would take to play that same disk on a console. And as the person responsible for paying the electric bill I'd rather play movies using the lowest power device available. Plus if watching all those movies wears the player out, I still have my game console to play games on. And Blu-Ray players are cheap these days, you can get a basic one for around $100 or less.

That's a stupid reason not to get a Wii as I'm sure most if not all of the people you know already own a DVD player. If I want another DVD player to add to the ones I already have, I'll buy one. I buy consoles to play games, not to watch movies.
