I think I'll judge whether or not 2011 is the best year when 2012 comes around. Speculation and hype will only lead to disappointment.

And as someone already pointed out, I think there is nothing more exciting than discovering those 'surprise out of nowhere' games. In my case, I found 2010 to be very lacking in that respect, so I'm secretly hoping 2011 will do better.

I'm not sure if it will be the best year but it is certainly one of the highest year on the ladder.

Yeah dude, honestly, everyone keeps trying to make franchises. I know it is risky for business, but I wish the collective balls of most major studios would drop and they would try making original things. I pay $60 for a game, I expect to not say "haven't I seen this before?...". I'm getting sick and tired of all this "safe/sequel" shit.

It's certainly starting to look like a DECENT year for games in general, first game I'm expecting is deadspace 2 and that's a good sign for the rest, but i wouldn't really have my hopes all up there in the clouds, i predict many games to be delayed, and many games to be disappointments, games like DNF, seriously, I'm not trolling or flaming, but what does that game have that no other shooter of it's ilk have? naked women and bubblegum? it only has duke in it and that's a fair reason i suppose.

i just hope 2011 shapes up to be a better year than that god awful year we had last.

I'm looking forward Mass Effect 3, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Arkham City as they are all I can afford right now. L.A. Noir looks quite amazing though. Also, holy hell there are a lot of shooters coming out this year.

Right now I'm really hoping Deus Ex 3 won't disappoint.
How's this for disappointing

it isn't even coming out in 2011 but 2012.

EDIT: but don't worry... it's not like it's the end of the world :D

It hasn't been delayed till 2012, it says it could be held back as far as 2012. But most people have given it a release window some time after April in line with the start of the fiscal year as SquareEnix moved it to the next fiscal year.

Was going to fully agree with you until I saw all the numbers. Game 3, Super game 2, Mega game 5, etc etc.

So many sequels.. : /

Oh well. *jumps on band wagon*

Dangit... the guys at Eidos should really update their Deus Ex website once in a while. It still says "available early 2011".

Heh, nice start of the year.

As a PC Gamer first and foremost and a WOW hater (its works not play!) I still think it will be an amazing year for games, but that depends on the end product. So this is much short list of games that are 90% guaranteed to rock.
Portal 2 - Only game company I know that will throw out half a game and a year of work if said content is not up to snuff, Valve cannot make a bad game, it's part of their DNA.
DA2 -Bioware has never made a bad game
ME3 -They are the gaming equivalent of Peter Jackson (I'd say Nolan but Jackson fits better)
Deus Ex 2- say gameplay at TGS, looks like the original + plus advances of the last decade
Batman Arkham City - This studio opened it big game business with the first batman, melding the DC Animated, Comic, and movie francise into a better whole, they know what they are doing no reason to expect less from the sequel.
The Witcher 2 - First game is firmly in my top games of all time, right next to Grim Fandango and the Valve games. They seem to be turning it up to 11 for the sequal with all their own tech.

The Old Republic - as a rule i cannot stand MMO's, they all feel like second jobs - that i pay to go to, however please see above for the trust in BioWare statement

As for the other stuff:
DNF - Gearbox makes games that range for C- to A-, have never really made a truly exception game, and this game is someone elses work too. We will see.
LA Noir look promising but then again its Rockstar and their games have only gottn more boring the more "gritty" they have gone. If they do not use this facial tech so i can play the game organically i won't see the appeal, and i will probably know who the killer is 5 min. in.
Diablo 3 - meh
Elder Scrolls 5 - they had a lot to fix from 4, to make me buy 5 that and its doubtful to ship this year

2011: Year of the sequels. Fanboy's getting what they want. They said the same thing about 2008, and that ended badly.

I do have to agree. And don't forget BulletStorm. Glad to see more over the top FPS's are having a comeback now. And last year only a handfull of games that I liked out of the mess that a dung bettle was pushing.

Considering 1998, this year doesn't look like shaping up at all.

Seriously, just look. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_video_gaming].
Holy crap your right. But there was some really shit titles in there like Resident Evil 2, but some gems in there like, Grim Van Dingo, MGS1 and Half life.
Looks like 2011 is going to be revolved around over the top shooters... and Portal 2.

You missed a whole lot of games, Treblaine. Also, several of the games you listed for 2007 weren't that great. Heavenly Sword and Resistance? Really? Might as well have been sequels considering they were just generic beat-'em-up and shooter, in that order.
I only listed ORIGINAL games of 2007, so of course no Tools of Destruction or Unreal Tournament 3 and so on.

I'd disagree with your assessment of Heavenly Sword and Resistance, I have played them and found them both very original and very engaging. But that's just conflicting opinions, you should know that I am not the only one who hold those game in high regard which i think counts them as noteworthy.

I also fear that:
-Alice 2
-Deus Ex 3
-Mass Effect 3
-MGS Rising
-Diablo 3
-Heroes M&M IV
-Beyond Good & Evil 2
-MechWarrior 5

Will not be released before 2012. That's just my opinion based on the companies behind them and all the many many other factors such as lack of demonstrated content, established studio trends and release date commitments.

Well, if The Last Guarding actually comes out this year, then it's going to be a pretty sweet year. Again, a HUGE amount of sequels, but some reboots of older franchises and a pretty good beginning has my hopes up (LBP 2 and MVC3 in the space of 2 months is awesome).
