Will DayZ development outlive it's own popularity?

We've all heard of DayZ. What started out as a popular mod for Arma II in 2013 in early alpha became its own standalone game, but with so many bugs that even an exterminator couldn't do anything about it. Thus began the long road of updating. DayZ standalone was released on Steam's Early Access for players who just couldn't wait and/or gladly help in the development process by reporting bugs to the dev team. The dev team has long periods of breaks in between updates, and quite a few setbacks in the past. Even though the release date is set in 2016, will Bohemia Interactive stand by that, or will there be another setback, making us wait even longer for DayZ. What do you all think?

I get that it was Alpha at release, but given the fact that the basic zombie gameplay has been broken since the mod's release, I have to say it's pretty damn awful how slow paced and little the game seems to be progressing.

I feel that the game may never actually be released in a polished and finished state.

Day what? Sarcasm aside, i thing that the game already outlived his popularity. It's been a long time since i heard anyone talking about it, so i guess most people who wasn't interested in the game, probably don't care anymore.

I think they are probably in development hell at this stage, and maybe, because of the lack of polish and how long it takes for updates, both the fanbase and the dev team may be losing morale.

It hasn't already? I've had that uninstalled for ages. They seem to be taking longer to develop this shit with an actually budget behind them than they did when they were making it pro-bono. I'm done with it for now as I am with Rust. Wake me in the next five years when we go from Alpha to Alpha 1.1 or, heaven forbid, a beta.

Well, the game has been in development since 2012 and they've delayed it 3 times then released it as Alpha early access. Development hell doesn't even begin to describe it.

Oh, there's also the mod which is free* that has more content despite it being a community project.

I called the fact that they weren't going to be able to make their beta release date at the end of last year, and it looks like I was right. An observation really isn't special when everyone can see it, but still, the schadenfreude is there.

The dev team for DayZ can't win. They release a fix or an update and a dozen more things break. Crafting is still at a basic level. Vehicles were added, only to be removed again. Loot drops are borked. Zombies still suck. There's no meaningful content aside from running around and blasting holes in other players. I'm willing to bet real money that DayZ doesn't see a beta release until the end of this year.

They chose the wrong game engine to work with. That's what's screwing them over right now.

From what I gathered, they started off using the RV3 engine (aka arma 2) then scrapped it and replaced it with RV3 with RV4 elements then scrapped that and replaced it with Enfusion...Something like RV3/RV4 hybrid?...Someone else has to explain that for me.

My problem with DayZ is that they seem to be more focused on fleshing out the existing mechanics, or adding new ones, instead of actually fixing the essential ones. It is great that they are adding in more variety in terms of guns, clothes and vehicles, and ways to die, but I would much rather have a game that is fun to play first, instead of worrying about whether or not AK-74 variant #17 is in the game.

You pretty much summed it up right. It's all rather ridiculous and I think it goes to show how out of control the project is for those guys.

Just one of the many reasons DayZ has lost any relevance.

From what it sounds like, it's basically in the same state as the early DayZ was for Arma II despite all this time and money. I think it's safe to say that DayZ is irrelevant and largely forgotten by the gamer community.

And people hop on so many Steam early access games as a cash grab..

Totaly agree they need to focus on what matters. And if they wait for so long to finally add vehicles why couldn't they have keept the Arma 2 ones untill they get replaced.

They focus on small improvements here and there. But its Zombie survival game that has some of the worst zombies ever. Way too few of them and the few times they are dangerous is because they are buggy as hell.

Honestly DayZ was something that only ever slightly interested me anyway. I downloaded the mod once, tried to play and it flat out wouldn't work. Couldn't connect to anything and at some point it CTD.

So I just gave up trying. And when I saw the standalone version I was extremely dubious it'd even work. So it really doesn't surprise me in the slightest its stuck in this development hell.

I just don't care about it anymore. I loved the mod. Played at least 100 hours + of it. All the different maps, vehicles, mods... It was just amazing.

I jumped on the standalone, massive waste of money. Like somebody said, it's all about adding yet more guns, leaving the gameplay unrefined, sloppy and dull. It's been over a year, and still no modes of transport. That's what made the mod so fun.


Day Z Standalone cost me £24.99 and is trash.

Arma 2 and all the expansions cost me £15 for the lot, i got hundreds of hours out of the day z mod, and many many more out of the vanilla game.

Everyone who I know obsessed over DayZ has moved on to better games of the same genre and rightly so, because right now they are at the very bottom of feature complete games of that kind. I really don't see why anyone would go back in a year or so, maybe for the name but that is one long ass shot to count on.

Pretty much this (for me anyway)


7-Days to die and Unturned (Which is free and developed by a 16 year old) are fantastic games, superior to Day Z in almost every aspect.

A development team that develops the game is always a nice thing to have
