I think so.

lets face it. lets face it. there are Lot of FPS games bieng dumbed down due to fit on consoles but i think from what i have read and heard from Quackcon. its returning to old school roots. something FPS genre badly need.

No regen health

Cover system

iron sight

etc

it has fast paced gameplay too. I love Doom 3 but from the look of it. it looks like it this is what Doom 3 should have been.

what do you think? discuss

Isn't it focused on melee combat? That was the impression I had from reading about it with all it's melee finishers. Also they talked about the level being liner and not open. Open levels are the big missing piece of of old school we need back.

Wait so let me get this straight.

You think Doom 4 is going to "save" the FPS genre even though it;s just one game and in this day and age it's not going to fit many peoples tastes because there's plenty of other good shooters out there, I don't think it's going to save but it's going to be another FPS game that could either flop on it's ass or actually be good, it won't "save" FPS because in order for it to be on the bring of collapse everyone and I mean everyone would have to hate it/abandon it and no one is doing either.

Plus this is just one FPS, just because it doesn't have iron sights means it's automatically a good game, that's hella subjective when we tread into such territory considering different strokes for different folks when it comes to FPS gaming, hell all the other genres too, I for example heavily dislike RTT games but love RTS, I feel RTS as a genre hasn't been getting much attention the past few years and RTT is rising all around with me counting only two RTS games coming out so far, one this year (PA) and the other maybe next (Grey Goo) so yeah that genre is floundering quite a lot compared to FPS which is still flourishing without any signs of stopping.

Just because you don't like some other FPS games doesn't somehow equate to FPS being dead/dying.

Also please, please sort out your English because some parts seem rather broken up making it hard for others to read/put together.

not saying FPS genre is completely dying but there are some games which harm FPS genre like COD, halo, BF etc

i remember how overrated COD4 was. it was mediocre yet it was highly praised game. FPS should be like Doom or Half life

Shadow warrior was excellent game. probably best FPS in years

Eh I dunno, harm sounds like another word you shouldn't throw in, I disliked the last few CODs, I stopped at the first BLOPS and that was it and I stopped at BF3 back in 2011 (Until EA gave me 3 for free recently) because there's only so much FPS I can play before I become bored, now I don't think disliking those I missed on were harmful, they just weren't doing things in a way that I'd like them too but then there was PS2 and that entertained me for a while before again I became bored, now it's apparently going to PS4 means PS users have something new to try and that game has iron sights because they actually need them to aim.

Thing that was fun about DOOM was shooting like a madman without the need for aiming down sights or irons, just shoot the gun and away you go but I don't think for a second that every FPS should be like DOOM, that would put of so many people and we shouldn't be into driving people away.

I didn't mind MW that much, the nuke scene was cool for a while but these days I think it's more a setting problem for FPS's that tend to focus on dem dirty terrorists or evil Russians/Chinese/Koreans, basically America/Eu's worst enemies from historical standpoints, I can't say we have many an FPS where the USA/UK and other EU countries are the bad guys.

But yeah my bottom line is I'd say they aren't really as harmful as you'd think, if everything became akin to DOOM then you'd automatically have another crowd saying games like DOOM are "harmful" and if it works your way you can imagine it should for them equally.

Not trying to say you're wrong but your choice of words are making it sound drastic a little.

I've been playing FPS games since old school, yet I really don't understand why people think health packs are better than health regen.

If playing the latest Wolfenstein taught me anything. It's that looking around for health packs all the time is just fucking annoying.

OT: I don't think so, though Titanfall has already saved the FPS genre for me.

I predict the Doom 4 will be a stale game that attempts to cruise by on the nostalgia value of its name, only to arrive with a squelch and be quietly forgotten within four months.

TBH new wolfenstein suck. its too slow, linear, iron sight, follow scripted path, cinematic. its nothing old school.

That is why automated games are far more popular, next to auto-regen and auto-aim we just need some automatic walking, shooting would also be better automated and then we can do away with this annoying expectation from developers to play their games.
I mean who really wants to be inconvenienced like that when you already paid for the entire game.

OT: We already have plenty of developers that know how to break that MMS mold, while Id Software peaked out in 1999 and only chased shadows since.

The idea is noble, since Doom was there since the birth of FPS games, but too idealistic.

John Carmack hasn't known what would make a great game since the original Guns and Roses was still together, and you can't just bring back old ideas and make them work again - it doesn't work that way unfortunately!

Hyperbole much.....

Just how exactly did you manage to stretch my point to reach that fucking absurd conclusion?

Save? The FPS genre? I have no idea why old shooter fans believe FPS's used to be some sort of high art for the enjoyment of the elites. Shooters have been "lowbrow entertainment" since their inception, there is nothing to save. FPSs have "evolved" to be more effective it is all.

How more "dumbing down" can you get than an FPS to start with? People play with the intention of aiming at something and shooting it. FPSs today have made that easier and more accessible for more people to do thereby putting the FPS genre at the top of the mountain practically as a genre.

FPS isnt dying, shit, even Wolfensein: TNO already did the best job at mixing the new with the old so I hope that Doom 4 is good but if it sucks its not like FPS games are doomed

Half Life 3 will reinvent the genre whenever that will come out.

Doom 4 not so much, because Carmack and Romero are no longer working on it.

FPS hasn't been good since Pokemon Snap IMO...

Seriously though, I prefer Doom, Quake and Unreal Tournament to modern military shooters, but it's never struck me as a genre in need of saving.
