Will Grand Theft Auto ever have a female protagonist?

I would so love it if they did. Hell, with Vice City I used to use that cheat that let you play as a civilian model and would play as the female ones. I was really disappointed I couldn't do that in San Andreas. They really missed out with V - you have three main characters, and not one of them is female? There had better be a cheat where I can change my character's appearance at least, then.

Sadly I don't see it happening any time soon. Perhaps as a spin-off a la Assassin's Creed, but never as a main game. And that makes me sad.

No. The "dude bro" audience wont touch a female protagonist for exactly the reason I stated.
Yep, because Portal was so not touched by Dude-Bros that it didn't even get a sequel... An Lara croft... Those Dude-Bro's hated her so much her series of games never existed. BULLSHIT

*ahem*

Can well please stop talking shit now. The reason this game series does not work with a female protagonist at this point is that it doesn't happen in real life that way, nor has it happened historically in real life that way. Until it does, it is unlikely to happen like that in a GTA game.
Right, because GTA and Portal share the exact same audience. Right, makes perfect sense. /sigh

Also, you're not seriously saying there has never been a female engaged in violent vice, right? Or that GTA will only produce stories centering around the average participant? Huh, I think I smell.... bullshit!

Sorry for reviving an old thread (it bothers some people). But some of you may be interested in reading about Griselda Blanco. Apparently, she was quite prominent in the Miami cocaine business during the 80s. Her story could help with creating a plausible female lead in GTA. She was assassinated less than a year ago many years after she fled to Colombia. I first heard of her when I watched Cocaine Cowboys and I guess she was pretty ruthless.

While she was an outlier for women in organized crime, she's still interesting, nonetheless.

What do you think? Could the series work from a female perspective?

I've never understood the question of female characters.
In my experience female perspective is not any different than a male perspective (in games)
Take games like Silent Hill3 or Tomb Raider, the only thing female about the lead character is breasts.

You mean in real life? If thats the logic then a female character would not be able to do hand to hand combat with men because men hit 5 times as hard. A mans body is designed for violence.

I don't really see it happening. Most female criminals I've heard of tend to be of the 'evil matriarch' variety, and sitting on your ass and ordering people about doesn't sound that interesting of a game.

But then how would one murder hookers to get their money back?

A female character would destroy an iconic part of the series!

But no, seriously, it'd be cool but I'm not sure a fair portion of the playerbase would take kindly to it, perhaps one day they'll add an option to pick your gender in the game though, that might be a way of gently easing people into it.

It worked well in Saint's Row, but since GTA tries to be more realistic, I don't see it happen. Gang/Mafia culture isn't very politically correct.
