I download a song off of a hosting site like mediafire or rapidshare even if that song has no samples or copyright materials whatsoever? And let's say I want to download a fan made song that has audio samples from a television series, ranging from short dialogue lines in pony music to
(though this song isn't actually on one of those sites) Will I be sent a warning then?

And if someone makes a remix and does not supply a download link will I be warned if I use a youtube converter? I don't download things very often so I just wanted to know because I hear in the next few months that internet providers are now going to be monitoring it's user base and sending out warnings for piracy or suspicious activity. I have Comcast if that's important.

Captcha: face the music. I may have something being implied to me because I keep getting this. Also "usual suspects"

Warning from whom?
The escapist staff?
The government?

No, you generally don't get warnings for even all-out piracy. People are only very rarely caught for that particular crime.

You mean your network provider? If that the case then I don't know since I don't know what network service you're using.

You'll only be caught if you download a bunch of stuff in a short amount of time, and even then it's really only an inquiry from your service provider.

If the site doesn't have any? Or the song? I think you mean the sites...well, let's say those host copyrighted materials. But anyway, where you download something from shouldn't really matter - it's up to what exactly you're downloading. Well, unless the domain name is something like www.hotsexwithchildren.com [http://kateschmate.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/youre-sick.jpg?w=600]. Even downloading torrents is not illegal itself nobody will warn or arrest you for downloading the latest free Linux distro off a torrent site.

Well, normally using other material (in this case TV music) would mean that the song is, ugh, in copyright violation or something. Well, if the sound snippets it uses are copyrighted. And even then, the song owner/distributor (not the site, the guy who uploaded it) should be guilty. And even then, it'd be if they were trying to make a profit on the song.

I think that's how it works, at least. Any legal experts to tell me to what degree I'm wrong?

EDIT: Actually, I think distributing the song would be considered copyright violation. Unless you're just giving it away to a couple of mates or something really small.

Umm, there is no reliable way to tell if you've used a YouTube converter/downloader or not. Even assuming you downloaded some copyrighted stuff from YouTube, somebody should pretty much go and take your computer and try to find the file to check if you had actually done it. As you can imagine, it'd be really hard work to do this to each and every person who has been on YouTube, so it's not a common practice. Not common at all. Like, I don't think it was ever done.

Get into trouble with who? People who download music generally dont get persecuted, even if its copyrighted.
I read somewhere that internet providers are going to start monitoring users for suspicious activity in the next few months. Something a long the lines of one warning, then they disconnect your internet or fine you.
