Will I enjoy Human Revolution if I didn't play the original Deus Ex?

Actually, I did pick up the original Deus Ex during a sale on Steam, but when I played it everything just felt so OLD that I couldn't get into it (this is also the reason why I couldn't get into Half-Life 1). I hear a lot of good things about Human Revolution though, and it certainly seems like my kind of game, but I just want to hear from someone who hasn't played the original game that still enjoyed HR. Anyone?

You'll be fine.

I haven't really played the original and I never felt lost or out of the loop while playing HR.

Go for it, it's a brilliant game.

It's a prequel is Human Revolution so you don't really need to have played the first game to get into it.

It doesn't follow on so you aren't missing anything.

I'll give you that the original Deus Ex hasn't aged well in the old looks department but it is still quite a decent game if you do ever get around to giving it another try. The story is quite decent and some of the voice acting is hilarious.

You won't understand many of the referenced links between HR and the original, but there really isn't any breaking point between the two for not having played the first one.

Go for it.

I haven't played the original either, and don't plan to, and i love Human Revolution.

The only reason i am not playing the original is because it looks horrendous, and some of the video's i have seen, the voice acting is just god awful...i would never be able to cope. However if they released an updated version of the game i'd happily get it.

It's a prequel, so you won't miss out on many story elements. and it's awesome.

I loved the first one, and I love this one just as much.

I can't guarantee you'll enjoy it, but I can assure you that you don't miss much, if anything, by not having played them.

Yeah, I loved it even though I haven't played the original. Get it, get it, get it.

As has been said above, go for it. Haven't played the origin myself (but have had the PS2 port sitting on my desk all summer, meaning to play it) and HR stands up on own. Plus, after Portal 2 I'd say it's easily the best game of the year. (...so far. We still have Skyrim and Arkham City after all.)

The only point where it's obviously contingent on having played the originals in the post-credits epilogue. Despite not knowing who anyone was, it was hilarious to watch. They awkwardly crowbar-ed in various character and secret project names with all the subtlety one could hope to achieve when the director was clearing telling the voice actors to dramatically pause before each name-drop.

YES. I've never played the original Deus Ex and I'm loving Human Revolution. It's a pretty awesome game (sword arms > most everything).

I really like Human Revolution and I've tried to play the original once or twice. I think unless you have fond memories of it from days of yore the old one doesn't actually hold up that well.

HELL YES!

I haven't played the original and freaking LOVED human revolution. There is little reference to the original save, I THINK, the ending.

I played the first game recently, played the first level, and love it. Pick it up as well.

Fundamentally, both Deus Ex and HR are different games. Also HR is meant to be a sequel to Deus Ex (like most third installments in a series these days).

It wouldn't be as enjoyable as you will miss out on the nods and hints but another than that it's not a strict prequel and borders on a reboot.

I was completely fine with it until the little bonus ending after the credits. That had me scratching my head and feeling like I missed something. So, like many people, I went to the Deus Ex wiki and looked it up.

Yeah...that bonus ending has a LOT to do with the other games. But otherwise, no, you don't need to know anything about the other games in order to enjoy this one. I knew nothing about them and enjoyed this game--already got the platinum trophy--but that ending just felt like a little jab in the ribs to me. Hopefully it means that they're thinking about remaking Deus Ex?

I really enjoyed it and never played the first one, a buddy of mine who played the original saw a bunch of shout outs, references, and little inside jokes, basically you don't need to play the original to enjoy it but it will apparently be better if you do.
