From your OP it seems to me like you will love Dark Souls, the combat is tough but fair, for me there were only two spots that felt unfair but I know other people that have not problem with them so that might be a matter of opinion. As for enemies they do get easier as you get better equipment and level up, and there is fun to be had in sweeping earlier areas that used to give you trouble. I absolutely loved the game and would highly recommend it.

As far as advice I would say avoid the wiki on your first run, or at least only use it minimally, as a big part of the game is figuring stuff out for yourself (for me at least), and beyond that I would agree with others advice of not rushing things in combat, pay attention and be careful and you'll be fine.

The difficulty is mostly based on your equipment. Find your enemies weaknesses through trail and error or by just looking them up and then change your equipment to exploit said weaknesses. The 4 areas with high ledges are really cheap, but everything else is piss easy with the right equipment.

The camera placement might piss you off in areas that have 100% fall chance, like firelink shrine area, Sen's fortress, blighttown etc... oohhh blighttown

Try not to mess around with shortcuts, while you can avoid a bunch of danger using shortcuts, they often carry a very nasty price.

My personal opinion, the prettier/badass the location is, the harder it is. Anor Lando and Ash Lake for example are absolutely breath taking, so bring a tombstone or a snickers.

Worth noting for new players, that if you play online, the game is highly populated with people who have super geared twink characters with amazing PVP gear well beyond the accessable content of that level, and seem to delight in invading new players games and smashing them to bits with no challenge.

So yeah, be super prepared to hate the living shit out of the community.

Also getting in and out of Blighttown before you can quick travel is a complete piece of shit and anyone who says otherwise is wrong. >.>

No to the first question, unless you dont learn the game mechanics of course and yes to the second. One of the best games ever, and if you like witcher 2 youll be sure to like it. Theyre very similar yet very different

Eh twinkers arent a big deal, you just dont pvp until your higher lvl, besides phantoms owning you early game is part of the experience. i for one love that much of community lacks honor while some uphold it at all costs, it mirrors the thematic tone of the game very well. Also, dark souls has the most unique rpg pvp of any game and its super addictive once you finally undrstand the game and switch gears from pve to pvp

Whenever you die, it feels like it's your fault, like you made the mistake, which is nice. It reminds me a bit of Super Metroid because it almost never tells you were to go, and you have to back track a little, so it can get a bit confusing. I had fun with it, except that R1 is to attack and not Square, but I got used to it. Plus there are cool little secret ways of dealing with things you can learn.

So... gonna put this out there cus its an awesome shortcut about blighttown... If you have the master key, you can take the elevator down from Firelink to New Londo and use the key to get to the valley of the drakes. From here you can go through the tunnel with the big fat guys, and straight to the normal 'exit' out of blighttown. Just go down some ladders, down the long rotating elevator, and tada!

Also, yeah, most of those people who twink just cant fight their own level. Kinda sad.

OP: On that thought, if you ever see someone invade your world with -awesome- looking gear in the beginning areas, just disconnect. I dont care if people think its wrong, twinks dont deserve the kill.

Im just glad the DWGR was nerfed, so now 75% of the PvP'ers arent wearing it... I still love it though :p

My standard three tips for newbies

1) Pick warrior. This game was designed around melee combat first and foremost. Everything else is a tacked on afterthought. Pyromancer is also acceptable if you stat him/her as a warrior.

2) Pick the master key. It will let you skip one of the most obnoxious boss fights for newbies. You'll know it when you get to it.

3) Play offline. You will hate this game far more if you have to deal with the game kicking your ass AND other players kicking your ass.

It depends what you mean by fair.

Enemies will gang up on you if let them, and when they do they won't let up untill you've stopped breathing. There are going to be a lot of nooks and crannies that have enemies hiding in them waiting for you to pass by. And some entire areas - most I would say - are meticulously designed for enemies to get the drop on you.

This does however reinforce the setting as a merciless realm, which the visual design depicts brilliantly.

- Try and take enemies on one at a time. Lure/aggro them away from danger zones with a bow and finish them off.
- Talk to NPCs multiple times. Some of them have items to give you and they won't part from them untill you've chewed their ear off.
- The easiest way to get through the game is as a tank.
- If you're connected online you will get invaded if you're human. In hollow form you're safe.
- Try to get summoned to another player's world using your summon stone. As a summoned phantom you help other players, gain any souls from enemies they defeated, scout out an unknown area in advance, and the best part... You don't lose your souls when you die.

The game is filled with things to discover, but is very reluctent in sharing information. You can visit Dark Souls Wiki if you're absolutely stumped on a certain item upgade or something.

Thank you for the warm welcome I wasn't expecting anywhere near as many responses :). After such high recommendations I purchased Dark souls this afternoon and although I am only an hour into it. I am thoroughly enjoying it. It actually reminds me in many ways of a Team ICO game or a Studio Ghibili film. Especially with it strange almost dream like sense of timelessness, freedom and the way in which the Lore is not so much stated but instead oozes from every crack within the world. Which i have very really experienced before in a game. As for the combat I am playing as a knight and so far I am finding it to have just the right level of difficulty although the toughest enemy that i have faced has been my own keyboard.

On that note, I do recommend getting a game pad of some sort. It really is much easier to play the game withh one as the keyboard layout is utterly atrocious! A simple wired 360 controller will do the job perfectly.

Protip for Dark Souls: Easy mode is the heaviest armour you can find and stacking points into vitality.
Get around 25-30 vitality with the Black Iron armour and a decent weapon and the game is done.

1. Does the game pull unfair moves? I am currently playing the Witcher 2 and although combat can be tough as long as i remember to parry and very occasionally roll I can survive and if i do die I can see why. Compare this to other games I have played where as soon as i recover from being knocked down I am hit again before i can even attack. This just becomes frustrating.

2. Do earlier enemies get easier as you level up? and finally from what I have seen from videos a lot of player seem to use a hit and run away tactic is this the only was to win?
1. At first it may seem that the game is expecting too much of you. Really, it's just that you will have to learn how to play in your own way. Once you figure it out, the rest of the game is basically up to your own skill as a player. (With a little help from levels and gear.)

2. Enemy difficulty isn't solely dependent on your level. There have been people to do the whole game on Soul Level 1 (leveling happens through purchase, not combat). The Hollow soldiers in the beginning of the game will quickly become nothing to you as you learn how to fight them, no matter what your stats are like.

You'll see a lot of people fish for parries and backstabs when they play, because to be honest with you, it's pretty easy. But it is by no means the only way to win. You can fight however you want.

Your gear is more important than your Soul Level.

All I can say is, to avoid frustration, take it slow and grind grind grind...
Don't listen to this guy. Grinding is altogether relatively unnecessary. The key to Dark Souls is learning enemy patterns and efficient ways to dispatch them. You will want to take it slow, though. Bumrushing Dark Souls is a quick and easy way to get yourself killed a million times and ragequit.

Hi I am new to this forum and am wondering if anyone can help me here. I have been looking at the game Dark souls and am wondering if it is the game for me, as I absolutely love the art style ect. I am wondering though
First off, welcome to the Escapist, my friend! Just stay out of the basement, and you'll be good. 'Tis brutal down there. :)

Yes.... and no. Mostly no. The thing is, most enemies will kill you in one/two shots the first time if you're careless. But slowly take the time to learn their attacks, and you'll be able to dish out the pain in return. Just take it slow and steady, and all should be good.

2. Do earlier enemies get easier as you level up? and finally from what I have seen from videos a lot of player seem to use a hit and run away tactic is this the only was to win?
Ah, I guess that they're going on speedruns and such. The game pretty much encourages any type of strategy to win, so that's one. Also, many players already are overlevelled for certain areas, hence hitting and running to advance to the next area. I don't advise this for new players, as any souls that you need will help you in the long run.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
If you need any help, just ask us. We're pretty friendly, so don't be afraid to take the plunge. :)

1. You will die a lot from things that you may feel are cheap (how in the fuck was I supposed to block/ dodge that? WHY DOES IT DO SO MUCH DAMAGE), but once you've learned an enemy's attacks and behaviours, they became pretty easy because you know how to take them down. They can and will still fuck you up if you're not careful, though.

2. They do get easier as you progress because they don't level with you, but by the time you've cleared an area it's about as easy at level 1 as it is at level 50. Difficulty in this game doesn't come from the statistics--whether you kill it in one hit or three doesn't matter if you know you can score the hit, and dying from ten hits instead of one doesn't matter if you know you can dodge. Your level isn't nearly as important as your knowledge, though of course a more health/ stamina/ defense can't hurt.

A few pieces of advice if you choose to play Dark Souls (forgive me if I rant, I really love this game):

The class you select at the beginning doesn't ultimately matter, you generally make your build fit your playstyle by how you spend your level-ups and equip yourself. With that in mind, I highly recommend picking the Thief class, for two reasons. One: If you do end up choosing to use a thief-like build, you are given the best dagger, the Bandit's Knife, right off the bat, whereas the other classes generally give you shit, and Two: The Thief gets the Master Key by default, meaning you can pick a gift besides it and still have it.

Which gift you pick generally depends on the reasons you're playing the game, which I will for the sake of convenience narrow down to two categories: Gameplay and Aesthetic (both of which Dark Souls excels at):

For gameplay purposes, the Black Firebombs can help you clear the earlier enemies if you're in a tight situation, but they're one-off, so I wouldn't recommend it. The Master Key (if you choose not to go with the Thief class after all) will unlock a few doors early, but you can find the key to every locked door, and it's generally unwise to venture into areas "early," as you are probably woefully unprepared for them, so it's really not useful until future playthroughs where you know what you're doing and just want to cut through a little quicker. The Tiny Being's Ring is basically useless after a while, so at best it's a very slight training wheel while you still figure shit out. The Twin Humanities are enough for you to figure out what Humanity does should you choose to experiment at a Bonfire, but you can pick up Humanity pretty early in the game anyway, so yeah. It heals a lot, though. The Divine Blessing, I would say, is your best bet, because they're pretty rare: Just don't use them early on in the game, or you will regret it later when you actually need it. This ************ here is useful no matter how far into the game you are.

For aesthetic purposes, the binoculars are nice to get a look around at the beautiful setting of Lordran, but not really useful for much else. I really wouldn't get this because you can pick it up almost right off the bat anyways if you know where to go. If you're into lore more than gameplay, get the Old Witch's Ring. Do not get the Pendant: It has no known use. The description literally says, "no effect," and game director Miyazaki actually came out and confirmed it has no use. But... if you play through Dark Souls and you get absolutely captivated by the lore, it is a very significant item. Miyazaki said in an interview, when asked which Gift he would get when playing, he said something to the effect of "From a roleplaying perspective, I'd get the Pendant." Nobody knows what the fuck it is, where it came from, or if it means anything at all; the speculation train keeps on a rolling.

A few parting words: As far as the technical skill involved, Dark Souls isn't too demanding. Parrying/ riposting take practice, but once you've got it down, you've got it down. Rule of thumb: If the enemy is your size or twice your size, human-like, and has a weapon, it can generally be parried. Get familiar with the game's mechanics; the Dark Souls Wiki/ community is your friend. If you have a question or are stuck, just ask them, or ask us! We are your bros, bro. Unless you like being invaded, don't play in Human Form. If you want a story, expect to do some digging. Amazing chest ahead, Praise the Sun, Prepare to Die.

Good luck!

Every death in Dark Souls is your fault. You succeed and fail on your own merits.
And yes, you can level grind to victory.
